It was definitely the foundation class of another long dynasty type run for Bama

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Spring break is officially over as the Alabama football team returned to the field on a warm afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide was back in full pads and helmets for the third time as they practiced for the fifth time overall this spring. Players had nine days off for spring break before getting back to it Monday.

Setting the scene

The weather was pleasant, warm with temperatures in the upper 70s and light cloud cover. It would have been a nice day on the beach.

What we saw

-- Again, defensive lineman Darren Lake was not spotted at practice. We are expecting to hear more on his status later Monday afternoon. D.J. Pettway, Brandon Ivory and Jarran Reed were lining up with the first group. That said, the defensive line often goes out of order, so it's hard to read much into that.

-- On the linebacker front, Reggie Ragland was working with the outside group in the latter portion of the media viewing period. Outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson was giving him extra instruction on a drill as the media was leaving.

-- Reuben Foster was next to returning starter Trey DePriest over with the middle linebackers.

-- The quarterback passing drills were led by Blake Sims with Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman second and third. Sims, you'll remember, spent time with a quarterback coach over spring break.

-- In terms of his receivers, Amari Cooper led one line followed by early-enrollee freshman Cam Sims and Robert Foster. On the other side, Christion Jones, Chris Black and Raheem Falkins went in order.

-- There was no sign of receiver DeAndrew White as he continues to rehab from his unknown injury.

-- Another important positional battle comes on the offensive line. Sophomore Brandon Greene was lining up with the first group at left tackle, followed by senior Leon Brown and true freshman Cam Robinson.

-- No change to the running back order with T.J. Yeldon followed by Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake.

What comes next

Nick Saban and a few players will meet with reporters after practice. They get back on the field on Wednesday.

Ragland and Lee outside and Foster/Depriest inside is my ideal base defense. Use Devall as a rabbit rusher

I really hope Ragland wins a role somewhere. He is the only guy from Bob Jones to go to Bama on a football scholarship since forever I think.

Assuming that is the first team DL, why no A'Shawn Robinson? Pettway getting a job I can understand because he's been with the team before, but while Reed is talented, is he a starter over A'Shawn?

Simmer down there fella, while this is only one day it is what CNS does. It mixes up everyone to see who plays best in certain situations and circumstances. What you see now is nothing like you will see in August.

I think so too. Another year to get stronger, faster, just more explosive overall, that's gonna go a long way when you can play like he did as a Freshman.

Darren Lake will miss the remainder of spring practice after undergoing surgery on an injured pectoral muscle, Alabama coach Nick Saban said Monday.

Saban said it's always difficult for players after spring break.

"We probably took a step back today," Saban said. That was expected because of the break.

With the O-line, Saban likes the competition and there could be some experimentation coming soon.

On defensive line, Saban says "they have a long way to go." He didn't seem happy to discuss the situation.

Derrick Henry is having a "great spring," Saban said. He's fast and athletic.

I think A'Shawn is going to be the only member on the D-Line who starts week in - week out. The kid is a stud.

Too many grown arse men on this team. 2015 isn't gonna be fair at all to other teams.

Hopefully these guys keep that fire in their guts all season long.

I'm kinda interested in seeing how the LB situation will play out. I think R.Foster/Trey in the middle and a combo of Dillion, Denzel, Evans(once he gets to T-Town) and Reggie on the outside, will be insane.
