Also... reporters noticed a DIME Package of HaHa/Belue/Smith with Collins/Cy Jones/Sunseri... I can dig it!!!
So Belue/Smith on the boundary?
HaHa and Collins at Safety.
Cy at Star and Vinnie at Money?
I'd imagine that with Fulton he'd be outside, Smith would be at Star, and Cy would be rubbing Yeldon's feet.

I think Cy is on the outside and Geno is at Star.

Don't underestimate Cyrus. That kid has amazing quickness. He could be a Javy type player at the star position.

Probably, but I don't know so I figured I'd go with what sounded more right just in case.
Yeah I don't under estimate Cy, but learning the secondary roles takes a while.
Anyone else feel like the CBs on this team will be a lot like 09? No lockdown stud.
Belue is sort of liek Javy in a way, now don't get me wrong they're different, but as the somewhat smaller, faster, agile corner.
Fulton is sort of like Kareem. Kareem didn't really step up until this season, and I see Fulton as being a guy who doesn't start off really good in the NFL, but after a year or two becomes one of the "solid" CBs.
Geno and Marquis, eh not really a good comparison. But whatever, roll tide.

I feel ya bro... Its hard to really project anything at this point. The guys are definitely talented, but it seems like its more above the shoulders than anything.
Staff seems to really like what they have in Geno/Belue/Cyrus, but I agree Fulton will be the guy that solidifies the rotation.
I was really hoping that Sylve and Washington would step up this spring, because those Freshmen coming in this year and in 2014 are coming for blood....

I don't know if I'll last until Saturday.
Have the teams been released yet? That usually comes a couple of days before doesn't it? Wanna see how they divide the RBs that we have. Random guess is Yeldon/Fowler(can he even play?)/Hart first tream, Drake/Roberts second team.
Oh and the WRs, we're so deep it won't even matter.

I think you got them flipped around.
Belue/Jackson - Fast, best Cover man, and often criticized for not looking for the ball
Smith/Arenas - More quick than fast and shifts in to STAR in nickel(player is always in the base D)
Fulton/Johnson - Linchpin to the nickel, lankier CB of the 3, and can put a bad big game earlier in their career behind him with a solid season.

Good point. I came to the conclusion off of not really having a stud for the first time since then (though the first half of 2010 was studless), but I like your comparisons much better.

Belue is never gonna get the pub, just like Kareem. He makes a few errors, but still the best CB on the field for Bama.
I know I'm crazy and the minority on this, but I'm excited to see Sunseri this Saturday. He works as the base starter still, and a few recruits have mentioned him by name from scrimmages.

This will not be welcomed news around here

Fine by me. We're not in base all the time, or most of the time for that matter. As long as any time he covers from there it's a deep zone it won't matter, our front seven won't give the play that much time to develop.

Vinny is a real gym rat though. He has a very high motor, and solid technique.
Posted on 4/16/13 at 11:55 pm to alabamabuckeye
I agree, and maybe he's improved, but his coverage wasn't just bad last season, it may have been some of the worst coverage we've had in a long time, but he's just not build for it, that's not his fault.

I think it's overblown, he was no worse than any safety not named HCD in '12. He made some great plays as an in the box safety, which is what he is built for. Matching him at any time with Lester, a natural strong safety as well, isn't a great pairing. I no longer believe Sunseri playing STAR was a bad choice by the staff, it was the ONLY choice. Depth at CB was bad and still is, at one point Bama had to play 4 safeties in a single set against LSU to mask it. Geno Smith wasn't ready yet and Milliner was too valuable to placed there fulltime.
Spreaking of the LSU game, I googled "Vinnie Sunseri burnt" and the most mentioned game is LSU. So, I watched it in this last hour.
LINK
Out of the entire game, Sunseri was thrown at twice:
1:26:20 - Perfect sideline throw.
1:43:20 - Zone Blitz, doesn't get there, and the Safety(Sunseri) is left singled on the Receiver(Landry). He is a liability because of the call, more so than because of his talent level.
That's one game though, does not mean that was his entire season. Watched UGA earlier this week, didn't see anything to consider him a "liability". Lester however screwed up a coverage that resulted in the 1st score of the game.
If he does wind up the starter, I think he keeps the talent line of his predecessors, Lester and Justin Woodall. Solid players, but are rarely even close to the top 5 players on the field.
I think the change-ups in the front 7 will help the back 4 as it develops. Nico Johnson was good downhill, but he was beat several times against LSU in coverage. Mosley fulltime could not come soon enough. Devall is a better fit when Bama goes with the base, nothing scarier than seeing Dickson in coverage. Team speed should definitely be up for '13.
And Marcus Carter had the worst coverage ability under Saban, by far.
So in closing, BRING IT ON!

The main concern though is when he's manned up against a WR, but there is always improvement with out players so perhaps it won't be as big of a deal, however we'll spend a lot of time in extra DB situations, so he'll be at Money, which I'm fine with. I would like to see some Jarrick personally, but the staff will make the best choice.
You also reminded me, since I can't find a snap count for CJ Mosley this past season, I was gonna go through and count them myself in some spare time, would anyone care for that? Maybe if I also count them for Trey and Nico? Garbage time excluded, perhaps. I've found a lot of the games, but I'm sure I'll have trouble finding the FAU, WKU, and WCU games though.
ETA : Or if anyone would like to split the work load with me to make it quicker, I watch some, someone else watches some, put the numbers together.

I agree with you about Sunseri.
People's perception that we were awful defensively against LSU last year is overblown.
Sure, they racked up some passing yards, but most of those passes were perfect. We missed a few tackles, but we also made some big stops. The defense ultimately did their job only letting them score 2 TDs and 1 fg, keeping the door open for our offense to win the game.
The SECCG was just a boxing match. That game was just destined to go like that IMO.

My 2 cents on Vinnie:
Good safety, horrible Star. He's actually a pretty good athlete, but his strength is reading plays and making tackles not covering slot WRs. I obviously don't get to see everything the coaches do on practice but I've always been surprised we didn't bring in Fulton and slide Belue or Milliner to Star at least until Geno was ready

We did, sometimes, but eventually strayed from it and did it less.

Agreed... I can't remember specifics, but I think Geno's ascension coincided a bit with Fulton's injury. Fulton played a bunch against A&M until he got banged up, and then Geno kinda took over the star position the next week, IIRC.
Belue and Sunseri were probably the biggest scapegoats we had from last year's struggles in the secondary. Belue's issues were more technique/strength based. From the LSU game, I remember at least two completions off the top of my head (1 Touchdown and 1 3rd down conversion) where Belue had a hand on the ball, but the LSU WR grabbed the ball with both hands and pulled the ball in. I rarely remember him actually getting burned throughout the season, so he should be significantly better this season in terms of playing the ball in the air. He probably has more natural talent than any other Corner on the squad, possibly aside from Cyrus and Jackson when he arrives.
Like Mag said earlier, Sunseri was at times being asked to do stuff beyond what his natural talents would allow. I remember Sunseri and Hubbard being the stars of the defense coming out of spring practice last season. The coaches trust Vinnie, and as an aside, I love seeing the kid blitz from the money position.
