The next coach has to have success recruiting outside the state of Alabama. You keep signing athletes with little IQ.

Pay the guy 4 million with a 4 million buyout (Max). Errrrbody has skin in the game...get it done or get out.

Dixon left a Big East/ACC program to go to his alma mater. He ain’t an option.

The next guy has to be a fvckin basketball coach. He has to have a system. He has to be able to adapt his system to whatever we have on campus and be comfortable recruiting tweeners and late bloomers. That's one of the main reasons I've said Forbes is the perfect fit all along.

We're not a blue blood. Our state doesn't produce a lot of great basketball players. It's REALLY HARD for us to go into neighboring states that do produce those guys (Georgia, Florida, Texas) and beat out Duke/Kansas/Carolina/Kentucky/etc for them. Whoever we hire has to be able to bring kids in who he trusts can run his system and be confident in his ability to do that - and if he is able to sprinkle in some elite players that is even better.

That's our ONLY option going forward IMHO. Anything else and we'll just be right back here being pissed in 4 years again at a guy who was "good at recruiting".

The powers that be may not WANT to do it but the 8-9 million dollar buyout should be no problem for Bama athletics this year. If that is the holdup , then we are not committed to putting our best foot forward IMO

I would like to see someone put forth an audit of youth development in Alabama. I would like to know what Alabama compares to the likes of Indiana (or hell, Spain) and what needs to be done. Coaching licensing that indicates the quality of a coach's knowledge? State of the art facilities in each of the cities for top local players to develop and hone their skills as they choose? Just wondering.

We can agree on bball iq issue. With internet tech, sure we can devise a system of videos, etc. that explains the fundamentals to a player in their free time.

Let's Talk Tommy Lloyd, Gonzaga Maestro

quote:

“He’s been a driving force in growing the product,” says head coach Mark Few. “His X’s-and-O’s acumen has grown so much, it’s at an elite level. He literally is one of the cornerstone guys in the whole run.”

Fifteen years ago, Lloyd was a young assistant trying to carve a niche, when one day Few said he liked his contribution in player development, but added a challenge.

“If you want to make a mark in this business,” Lloyd recalls him saying, mouthing the next words slowly, “find a way to get players.”

Long term, donating a big portion of the basketball budget to local youth development is almost certainly impossible but would probably improve Alabama basketball in the future more spending it coaching salary.

I lived in Italy for 9 years and my best friend's father was a youth coach for Virtus Roma. The hands on coaching and development is on a completely different level than in the US but mainly because it's a completely different model. The professional teams have academies where paid coaches work with players from an early age they hope to develop for the pros . . .

As someone else said UA needs to go out and hire a "basketball" coach who can develop a system. We can’t recruit like UK, UNC, etc.

Look what Ole Miss did. They went out and hired a GREAT coach. We need to find a Kermit Davis type coach and to me that’s Kelvin Sampson.

Wouldn’t oppose Matta either but the health concerns could be an issue. He flirted hard with UGA and Ole Miss last year

Would love to get Kelvin Sampson but he’d have to explain what he did while at IU

I agree but it also happened over a decade ago. Back to my Kermit Davis comparison, Kermit was fired from Texas A&M in the early 90’s for violations and he’s back now in a power 5 job

Not that there’s interest but Texas is reportedly planning on moving on from Shaka Smart:

If they want Matta they’ll get him.

We're back at the same point we were with Grant and his F'ing 6-8 million dollar buyout because the BOT was stupid when they extended Grant and Johnson.

If we get lucky then maybe Mrs Johnson and Avery are ready to get out of T-Town thus a deal might be a possibility but Avery has all the leverage at this point just like Grant.

That’s what I don’t understand: we had to stick with Grant too long waiting for his inflated buyout to fall. Then the BOT repeats the mistake with Avery. WTF?

At least Florida was flirting with Grant to replace Donovan when he left for the NBA and came right back. There was reason to think we needed to bump Grant. Nobody in the fricking free world wanted anything to do with Avery when he conned Alabama.
