As the winningest head coach in Alabama football history.

Bryant: 232-46-9
Saban: 132-20

Saban would have to stay another 8-9 seasons to do it, while continuing to win at his current pace. It's unlikely that this will happen but certainly possible.

He would be very close to passing Bear for all time wins as well.

It's not going to happen though.

I think if Saban wins another NC, he will retire.

Don't take this personal as this is more of a general rant than you specifically, but:

Why? What has ever given you or anyone the first hint of this being true?

I see stuff like this constantly and I just can't help but wonder why the hell anyone thinks these things. Because everything I've ever heard from the man suggests that how many national championships he has will have absolutely nothing to do with when he retires.

Is after the next championship his drive for success and what he does going to fade or something? Does each national championship won somehow drain a certain amount of drive from him or something?

So if he doesn't win another national championship for 10 years he will coach that long, but if he wins another next year he will only coach 1 more year? Seems silly when you think about it like that doesn't it?

I'll take him at his word - he's going to coach as long as he can physically maintain the level of success he desires.

You and I are of the same mind. There is nothing indicating that Saban is still coaching only to break Bryant's national championship record. He has said in multiple interviews that he coaches mainly because he loves affecting the lives of young men. He definitely enjoys winning, he definitely enjoys the accolades, but what thrills him the most is changing the lives of his players for the better. He absolutely adores seeing them graduate and succeed in life.

He also recently said that he has been on a team since he was child, and is terrified of the day he isn't on one.

Saban will retire after his 10th NC. He'll land a consultant gig with the Bama football program and in his spare time, he'll mentor up and coming coaches.

If you look at it on a NC per win basis, Coach Saban is winning national championships at over double the rate Coach Bryant did. I think 132 wins is enough of a sample to make this comparison. It is astounding.

I think Coach Saban loves his job. So it probably comes down to Ms Terry and their health and things like that.

The media and certain fans have it in their mind Saban's entire reason for coaching is to count national titles and pass Bear Bryant.

It's a completely made up narrative. Saban has never once said anything to even hint that is true. In fact he's said the exact opposite.

Saban may retire in the next few years but there isn't some national title count he's specifically chasing.

Agree with everything you said but I have to think there is something inside Saban that wants to go out as the GOAT. He sits in Bryant's office everyday so you know feels the history and wants to knock him off the throne. He wants to to retire as the GOAT no question about it.

He’s already knocked him off the throne. Just as many championships in half the time. I love Coach Bryant, but come on. By any objective measure, it’s not even close.

I wouldn't disagree with you. the good news is the story is still not written on the Saban-Bama dynasty. Before this through, you, I, and anyone else will not live to see it replicated.

When Saban finally retires (hopefully 10+ years from now), I really would love for him to stay involved in some way with Alabama football. Idc what it is or how much, even if it’s just him showing up a a few practices here and there. I just would love to have him around the program even after his coaching days are over.

Nick Saban is now on path to beat Wooden. He's not done yet.
