If the Bama D shuts down Fla, Ill give credit to golding. The offences we have faced haven't been that great since the Ole miss game.

Well we aren't going to shut them down.

If we hold Florida to under 30 points, make key stops to let our offense extend the lead and force them into field goals in the red zone I'll be very happy.

But it is legal for someone to call plays from the box, correct ?

I'm simply wondering if this is Tosh2.0 (pun intended) where the entire fanbase had no idea that someone else was calling the defense until end of season.

Well it sure as hell isn't Charles Kelly or Sal Sunseri. So, that leaves Freddie Roach or Karl Scott?

Golding has experienced players who know where they are going, now. They've made the scheme more adaptable to the personnel and experience they have - especially on the back end. The defensive line actually has some depth and kids who are growing up. The linebackers make mistakes but they know where they are going. I'm not sure our "play calling" is that much better (or that it was ever terrible), but the fact that we don't bust very often and our guys are playing at full speed is better - and that's due more to practice, experience and confidence than anything else.

So, I'm not sure they difference in play is really even all that tied into things actually happening on gameday on the sideline.

I will say that tackling has improved ...and as a result so has the 3/out percentage.

Plus 1 to Golding.

But two things I think have helped him significantly

1) since OM, Bama hasnt faced a fast pace offense. Or an offense that
2) wasnt rendered predictable by being down double digits.

Safety blitzes from Tillman's corner...
And players getting into position /communication issues still cause me concern against elite teams

Clem ND OSU all have very good qbs that can scramble and effectively use all their wr/rbs/te. I honestly see a "who has the ball last scenario" against those teams because i don't know if we can stop them ( like OM)

I think we can stop Notre Dame (some). But yea, with Clemson and Ohio State it would be a shootout. And to be fair, I'm pretty sure nobody is "stopping" those offenses (much like ours).

Ok, well, maybe he just got off to a rocky start with a team that had a lot of injuries, and probably the worst offense ever for a struggling defense. At least I'm willing to accept that if he continues to improve, and the defense continues to play good football, but I'm not sold on this dude yet. I really dont understand how we saw over a year of historically bad defense, and then suddenly the '11 Bama squad came out of the tunnel after halftime uga.

Yea - I'm not sold on him being great either, but I do think that we've seen that he isn't such a cancer that he destroys everything he touches. I think he's probably "ok", and that in circumstances with our normal level of skill/experience he can produce an above average defense.

Could we do better? Yea, I'm pretty sure we could.

Switch to much more zone made a huge difference. The real neat nugget to know would be how that decision was reached. Committee, analyst suggestions, Saban himself?

But do we want to do better for 2 years and then lose another coach, or stick with Golding and have him come up under Saban like Kirby did and maybe be around for another 5 - 6 years while consistently improving and growing into a great DC with Saban's mentoring.

If Saban thinks the latter is a realistic possibility, then that is the path I would rather take. If our D plays well over the next few games, I'll be pretty happy about our prospects moving forward.

Update as we near halftime of the SECCG: Golding still sucks as he continues to cover Florida’s fastest receivers with safeties.
