I’m not a coach and I haven’t stayed in a Holiday Inn for a while, but I think the 3-3-5 stresses speed and athleticism and execution rather than toughness and power at the line of scrimmage. It is somewhat of a “bend don’t break” defense as some folks allege although theoretically there should be a lot of blitzing. I’ve seen it called a high-risk, high-reward defense because if you don’t execute perfectly you’re in trouble especially if you are facing a physical OL that can open gaps for the running game and a mobile QB who can get to the edge and raise havoc especially if linemen overpursue. Wommack is not alone on an island running it, other teams do.

Well, he did create a lot of neat names for each position.
I call him the real bandit because he is stealing the U of A's money as of 5:38 today.

I may be wrong but I could have sworn I watched FSU run 3-3-5 quite a bit. Got pressure on a 5 man oline very well with it.

I am glad someone mentioned execution. I am all for it.

They switched to 3-3-5 this year. They talked about it several times on TV yesterday. Joe Tess and Jessie are flat awful, but I do recall them discussing the change.

I thought it was pretty telling that the coaching staff doesn’t have a lot of faith in the team, especially the defense.
I base this off the numerous times we went for it on fourth down when it wasn’t necessary, yet. And the fact that we didn’t attempt fgs when we had the chance. It was either panic or they knew.

My .02 on the issues with the defense, particularly against the styles of offense that have completely dominated us. I have coached in offensive systems at the high school level that ran somewhat identical systems- zone read/RPO offenses.
1- Our box is too light. Most of these coaches are box counting (Gus especially.) We are lining up with 6 or less in the box on most plays. The offense has a built-in advantage with the 7 or even 8 players involved in these kinds of plays (5 OL, QB, RB and sweep).
2- We are lining up pretty much straight up regardless of formation strength or personnel. We have our nickel and dime backs split too wide without a formation need. We run a lot of 2-shade/2-5 techs with a LB in each B gap. So if the offense runs to their strength, they’ve got us right where they want us. Which leads to my next point…
3- we lose contain and option responsibility. Nobody sets the edge and it doesn’t even look like we have keys. Someone should be responsible for QB, RB and the sweep on every one of these zone reads or RPOs.
When we finally made an adjustment and put 7 in the box, we finally held up decently against the run unless we lost edge containment or missed tackles, which was a whole other issue itself.

The 3-3-5 isn’t an inherently bend don’t break defense. It’s basically just operating in base nickel formation given the expansion of the passing game, which makes a ton of sense with college football.
Womack’s approach with it is just horrendous. Very sit on your heels, let it come to you style playcalling and he never does any exotic blitzes and rarely gives varied looks. Contrast that with Pruitt using Minkah off the edge to shut down sweeps.
Oklahoma and FSU both went the same exact way. He spent over a full half with a light box, offense chipped methodically downfield, and then once we start loading the box in the third FSU was struggling to convert downs.
I much prefer it to the 4-2-5 but you need someone who actually needs to run it and just doesn’t think he can slap six DB’s back there and call it a day
Also I hate to say it but we have the fricking depth to switch to a 3-4 package mid-game if we wanted to. Why we don’t blows my fricking mind

Listening to them call the game was torture. They are just awful. Tessitore screams like a lunatic the whole time. I had to take a Tylenol.

Good observation. You’d think a highly paid coordinator would recognize at least some of the same.
So it’s either piss poor basic coaching or piss poor scheme.

It is mostly coaching, but there were definite effort issues as well. Which that could really point back to coaching as well

Yeah, I thought one of the goals/pluses of Wommack’s defense was to bring blitzes and pressure to disrupt the offense. We play on our heels and catch people as they run around or over us. This technique is getting us gutted like a fish.

The first playcall of our first possession in the 3rd quarter was a “shot” play that failed miserably. This was coming off the first good defensive stop of the game. I knew then we weren’t going to win and were in desperation mode, down 10 with about 27 minutes left to play.
We got impatient on offense several times and shot ourselves in the foot, but that call just exuded a lack of confidence to me. And also there’s apparently no thought to complimentary football on this staff.

Wommack will get his shite together for 4-5 games while the offense decides to take a shite. Once the offensive decides to get their shite together for 4-5 games, Defense will implode.

The shot play was fine honestly, it backed the safeties up a bit. I was a little shocked that was the only real shot play we took all day and that we avoided running the ball after it
Even at Washington, DeBoer went for it often on fourth. It’s the same as Lanning, they both tend to be very risky on the analytics side and we saw that last year.

I keep hearing about the "Swarm" defense. Watching the game I now understand. The butterfly swarm is not nearly as entertaining as I had hoped.

Deboer said he will get things fixed. That begs the question: If he could fix things then why wasn't it done over the last eight months? He made a big mistake in hiring Wommack who makes Golding look like a genius. I don't think he has the balls to do what needs to be done.
