You don't think Saban could do a better job at WVU over the next 5-7 years than what's being done there now??

I don't think Miss Terry would sign off on that.

Speaking of "help" -- it is something that you should seek.

That's not the point. It's that 70+ year old coaches are retired or are on the verge of retirement because they are tired of the constant grind

If he wanted to coach again purely for the love of the game he should do so at some decent FCS school IMO.

Get away from the NIL crap and go somewhere you can actually build a program with a culture the way he likes.

2nd page before anyone mentioned the real decision maker.

His retirement pretty much happened when I always predicted it would...after a conversation initiated by Miss Terry.

It is the point. Because it's a hypothetical question.

I do not think the way Saban coaches is conducive to making it work to some level of success at a place at WVU in his mid-70s. Especially after retiring once.

He could not hire good staffs at the end of his tenure at Alabama and that, more than anything else, was the reason for the decline seen after 2017 (though briefly smoothed over by his last great hires in Sark and Flood).

Saban already had institutional inertia working to his advantage in Tuscaloosa as his 70yo arse dragged this program to great heights despite the headwinds described above.

Do I think he could do that in Morgantown? Hell no. I don't think he's got the fuel in the tank to do what would have to be done considering he's likely to have a staff even worse than his late editions in Tuscaloosa.

I think he was in the late 60s, early 70s but here is the big difference: Mack Brown was always a motivational CEO type. Nick Saban is the type of leader who is the CEO but can get in the trenches and get his hands dirty.

You realize WVU is in the BIGXII, right?
You don't think he could win the BIGXII and get an auto playoff spot by year 3? In the BIGXII??
REALLY??

Brown is OLDER than Saban by a couple months. He was hired at UNC before the 2019 season.

I do not. I think it would shave years off his life just to get that program off the ground much less winning the conference. This ain't mid-50s Nick Saban who took over a 6-7 Bama team coming out of probation and roster sanctions.

I think I made this point in my post above: Saban struggled to piece together a good on-field staff in the 6 years of his tenure. His last national title was secured by inarguably his last two great hires: Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood. When those two left, the staffs in the final 3 years of Saban were never the same because neither side of the ball had a promising future head coach leading them.

I think part of the reason Saban was able to grind out 3 more years rather than go to the house after 2020 was because of the inertia of the machine he had created aiding his own personal commitment to covering for the deficits elsewhere in the staff.

He's not going to have that institutional inertia in Morgantown. He'd be a man in his mid-70s with a thinning address book of good hires and difficulty with recruiting younger guys to join him. I mean, look at our staff from 2023. Some of the guys had a landing spot before DeBoer even landed in Tuscaloosa. Some of them took several months to find their next paycheck. Young coaches don't want to hitch their ride to a guy who may retire or pass away at any moment.

So simply put, no I don't think he'd just win the Big 12 and make the playoffs every year in Morgantown. I think it would be an accomplishment if he fielded a team that competed for the conference a few times in his tenure. Steve Spurrier at South Carolina is probably the type of success we're talking about...not replicating what he did at Alabama in the Appalachias.

No. Just wanted to know what people thought. Then the trolls that live here who can't be trusted not to be complete dicks showed up per usual and shite all over a hypothetical question.

Everyone admits that Saban still has gas in the tank so to speak, but think you're retarded for asking if he'll coach. And I surmise they feel this way because of the magnitude of butthurt they'd feel if he did dare coach somewhere else.

I think he could absolutely coach WVU to a BIGXII title. The BIGXII sucks balls. You think players wouldn't transfer to Morgantown to play for Saban?
Shiiiiiiiiit.
