DeBoer isn’t intense and doesn’t demand excellence?
Posted on 11/16/25 at 1:52 pm to Pastor Mike
Mike I don’t like 9-3 being a new normal, but in a 16-team SEC that now includes two perennial national powers who have long been in our zip code as far as status and in the NIL/portal era where players have zero loyalty to a school, a coach or fans and are mercenaries for the highest bidder, and some schools that don’t have our tradition but have bigger checkbooks than we do can either sign or lure away the kind of talent we used to land easily, is it a realistic normal?

It’s not going to be enough to make a playoff in many seasons, so probably not. That’s why people need to stop paying big money for coaches because its like the NFL where you get 3-4 years and you blow the whole thing up and try again.

Have you seen his teams in letdown situations? That was one of the biggest knocks on him at Washington.
From the opening press conference I’ve been concerned if he has the intensity and work ethic it takes to win week to week in the SEC, where there are zero weeks off. I know he can win a big game and he’s good after a bye week where he has plenty of prep time, but can he keep guys focused enough on down weeks or work hard enough to overcome a preparation disadvantage that Bama has at least 2 times every year (we’re 1-3 in those situations under DeBoer).
I think the FSU loss created such a stir that he got woken up and tried to change styles a bit, but over enough time it fades and if you aren’t an intense person by nature, that level of intensity wears you down. When you are Bama and every team prepares their best for you, coupled with at least 2 preparation disadvantages every year, you generally can’t afford to lose a game like FSU. If we beat AU and find a way to win at least 1 more (SECCG or Playoff game), then it will be a decently successful season. However, we lose a lot on defense next year, tho. This was supposed to be our year.

Stupid is as stupid does. Lol
Yes I agree. Would be a bad decision. We have to give him 2026 with Russell as QB.

I don’t know if it’s a lack of intensity, too much pressure, or what but we’ve had a chance in pretty much every game since UGA to put our foot down and take full control of it and we wilt. Our second half performances all year have been subpar.
Not asking for blowouts but we don’t have a MTAQ mentality.

Exactly and then he gets exposed by the neighborhood bully, Venables, again. DeBoer and his staff are soft. Maybe he’s good enough for some place like Arizona State or UCLA. But Alabama is too much pressure for him. His teams have gotten their asses kicked two years in a row by Oklahoma and I don’t have any confidence about winning at Auburn. It’s actually turning into a similar situation that Auburn was in with Freeze. He was supposed to be an offensive guru much like DeBoer and Grubb were at Washington. If we lose the Auburn game, I expect DeBoer will be out mid season 2026 like Freeze was this season.

I’ll push back a little and say that OU had a preparation advantage in both games, and this year’s game was nothing like last year’s.
Honestly, I expected OU to be a loss at the beginning of the year. It’s the FSU game that is currently the issue. You just can’t lose that game. Beat AU, and it won’t matter much. Lose, and he will have a scorching hot seat coming into next year.

ose and finish 9-3 and miss the playoffs and you will have pretty much lost the entire fan base.
It's important, but I disagree. How many years did it take Ryan Day to be back in the hunt at tOSU or Kirby to turn around UGA? I think DeBoer is still a very good coach.
But, just because I don't agree w/ you doesn't mean I downvoted.
PS - Now... I sit and wait for the (probable) resident LSU fan in this forum to downvote this. Just remember some of us can do the same.

Kirby played for the national championship in his second season. He lost to Alabama on the second and 26 play in overtime as we all remember. This Alabama team has no chance of playing for the national championship.

Kirby was in the CFP NCG in year two with Georgia and would have been in an expanded playoff in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Ryan Day is in a similar boat.
Bottom line, if we drop the Iron Bowl then Kalen DeBoer's seat should be red hot going into 2026. He's getting paid too much money to be going 9-3 every year.

I don’t think DeBoer is going to crash out in 2026 unless the fan chatter and big booster capital flight sours the locker room. He will probably shite out another 8-9 win season at worst. I think the schedule actually gets easier in 2026 with Vandy likely taking a big step back, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and South Carolina. FSU is a home game too. Georgia, TAMU, Auburn at home. LSU and Tennessee on road. I feel like we ought to not have such a hellacious schedule as 2024-2025. 10-2 seems like a reasonable expectation even given my diminishing opinion of this staff.

If we lose to Auburn and miss the playoff again, DeBoer will have to make dramatic changes on his staff, particularly on offense, to keep his job.

You talking like you won the power ball and cutting a 70+ million dollar check

The fan base will turn on him if we miss the playoff again. As hard as it may be to pay out a huge amount of money for severance, it would hurt the university even more to keep him if he’s underperforming what he’s getting paid to do. He’s getting paid way too much money to be going 9-3 every year.
Posted on 11/16/25 at 3:26 pm to bamatide07
If Greg Byrne and the major money players don’t want to cut him loose, he won’t be cut loose.
Posted on 11/16/25 at 3:29 pm to InkStainedWretch
Maybe I should rephrase. If we lose to Auburn and miss the playoff again, he likely won’t get fired. But there will absolutely be staff changes and an expectation to make the playoff in 2026. If things go south next season then things will get real.
Posted on 11/16/25 at 3:44 pm to bamatide07
There absolutely SHOULD be staff changes. I will be pissed if there aren’t.
But I think what is going to be hard for him to get past is that even if the running game is strengthened, his offense is never going to be like ours in 2009 and some people are never going to be good with that.
They’re focused on curb stomping people (full disclosure, we have got to stop losing the second half and start getting some room on the final score), making people’s asses quit, proving our toughness, proving that we’re superior to our rivals.
Full disclosure again, I would love to see a little of that. But I also understand, and I don’t think others do, that college football is 180 degrees different from the way it was in Saban’s heyday because of the playoffs and the money. It’s a marathon now and the week to week regular season has become de-emphasized except as a means of getting into the playoffs. And I don’t care if Kalen DeBoer, Kirby Smart or anyone else whose name is in the NCAA guide is our coach, the priority has to be getting a W regardless of the margin or the style points.

Wrong. We have a better chance than 90% of the teams in college football.

There was nobody realistically on the board that would be doing any better.
Except there was. And there's a reason why major schools with current HC vacancies are trampling each other and slobbering all over themselves in a bidding war to get him, now. He's the best coach in the country not named Kirby.
Easy, logical choice that wasn't even considered. But, we decided to go after a NAIA/PAC12 coach because he beat a Dan-Lanning-coached-team a time or two. The stubbornness, short-sightedness, and stupidity of our administration will be to the benefit of another program.
