I find myself voting Republican 95% of the time since Ronald Reagan because while the GOP has moved toward the right end of the spectrum, the Dems have swung SO far left as to be untenable for most middle class Americans.

I find myself doing the opposite because in my view the Republican party has swung...maybe not too far right, but they've gone to something I find hard to support. A callousness towards the less fortunate while espousing Christian beliefs. That feeling has been solidified the past few years with its full throated support for someone I find wholly unqualified to be president. And that feeling has nothing to do with policy, and everything to do with his ignorance of history, disrespect for the norms of the office, his lack of intellectual curiosity, and the way he speaks about people that disagree with him.

quote:

When Bernie Sanders and AOC are some of the mainstream faces of your party

Bernie isn't a Democrat. He only becomes one when he wants to run for President, which is a big reason why he lost in 2016, and will lose again this year. And AOC is finishing her first term in the House. A freshman Representative is only the face of the party in the right wing bubble that makes her one. I can rattle off dozens of people that more reflect the face of the party.

quote:

government giveaways to illegal aliens, felons, and professional societal parasites, how does anyone that is a middle class working family person vote for them?

It's easy for me because I recognize, despite my best efforts, just how close I am to being in need of social assistance. The loss of a job in a declining economy, a medical emergency that maxes out my health insurance coverage, a natural catastrophe, etc. I have retirement savings, and rainy day funds to tap into, but I also recognize so many people in this country don't have that luxury. I also don't begrudge someone else's plight, and I think the wealthy are bilking our governmental system far more than the poor and destitute are.

Both ends are milking and bilking the system and doing it on the backs of the middle class who get no relief and we’re damn sick and tired of it!

True, but I'm much closer to being on the poor and destitute end than I am the wealthy end, so I support the side that I feel looks after the poor and destitute better.

The only thing this stupid shite does is numb people to when the real crisis show up. You cry wolf one too many times and people stop reacting. You can see it with the hurricane warnings. The Weather Channel sensationalizes them all now to the point where every big storm is the "storm of the century" and people start thinking they can ride out a Cat 5 because the last Cat 5, errr 2 wasn't shite. So when the real bad arse Cat 5 comes, like Katrina and Michael, people stay, systems fail, and bad things happen like deaths because people become deadened to the warnings.

Why would you try to ride out any Hurricane with a 4 or 5 attached to it?

There has always been a segment of society that is going to ride out the worst weather situations, no matter how you warn them. They couldn't get everyone off of Mt. Saint Helen in 1980. People put their possessions ahead of their family's longterm health. And then many end up taxing emergency plans and risk innocent life needlessly. It smacks of a pretty much-warped value system. For the most part, when the big blows get close it's best to get out of town, period.

You mean the Republicans that lied about a tax bill benefitting everyone that in fact only provided significant benefits to the rich? The ones who cut snap benefits every chance they get? The ones who attempt to ban abortion in poor states knowing that the rich can afford to just go elsewhere. The ones who have opposed the obvious science of climate change at every step of the way because they're beholden to their donors from the oil and fracking industries.

Those Republicans?

Yeah, Jeff Bezos buying half of Congress to ensure he can continue amassing untold wealth while avoiding taxes and a poor single mom with 3 kids lying on her SNAP application to get more money for food are both equally responsible for the problems of the middle class in this country. Definitely.

Based on my occupation, that is not a true statement. Most poor people dont pay tax. They get what is called refundable credits. Thats means they not only pay zero tax but get refunds. Just another welfare system built into the tax code. I see it all the time, so dont tell me its not true. The latest tax law greatly benefits some middle class people. They now get the 2,000 child credit, if your income is under 400,000 married or 200,000 single. Previously many got phased out. You just cant make a blanket statement about the latest tax law. Everyones rates went down , but the payroll withholding tables were changed to reflect the decrease. so it didnt change the refunds people got. They were getting it in each pay check.

You're right, my bad, I'll amend my statement.

The rich disproportionately benefited from the tax cuts. The largest breaks by far applied to corporate taxes and estate taxes. It has not promoted GDP growth . It has not resulted in job creation as executives instead bought back shares at record amounts.

And maybe you're okay with all of that, but in the context of my post and the one I was responding to, it's laughable to suggest that this party has any interest in representing low income people.

If this thing largely falls apart, the media, etc., won't be able to ever convince Americans again of an existential weather or health threat. This is the media's and the WHO's weapons of mass destruction claim. They'd better not be wrong.

The whole point is to get thru this with minimal death. To do that, there has to be a countrywide pause in activities to make sure the hospitals don't get overloaded and have to prioritize who dies and who doesn't (deaths meaning the most vulnerable).

This is NOT an overreaction. This is how this should be going, and I'm glad the administration finally realized this. I applaud Trump and Pence for how they've handled this as of late. Some could argue it took too long but decisions are made based on current data.

What? Trump should've handled this last week. He should've been proactive with the situation. Why are you applausing a man, the same one who called Cornavirus a hoax? He didn't handle the situation right. The public and people around him handled it right by forcing him to do the right thing.

Out of necessity for something not related to this uh, er, this event, I had to go to Walmart. Total insanity. Thank God they had beer. Then after fighting my way out of there, I stopped by the local grocery store. The store looked like it had been looted. This country is fricked. Not from leadership. But from the people we have become. We could never handle a real crisis.

The leadership is also terrible. But yes, the populace is just fricking stupid. Oh we may have to go 2-3 weeks without leaving home? Better fill my cart up with $400 of perishable goods like produce and meat and leave all the canned tuna, peanut butter, multi-vitamins, and protein powder on the shelves. Also, I'd better buy a year's supply of toilet paper because reasons.

So get this. I live in PCB and the beach, especially the 30A area is packed with tourists that are using the extra spring break time to just come vacation at the beach. Normally, I would say this is a good thing, but this stuff is happening for the purpose of SOCIAL DISTANCING to stop this pandemic from spreading. It is NOT an excuse for another vacation where you come ravage our grocery stores, crowd public places while having no idea if you are positive or not, packing local restaurants, etc. Yep, good for the local economy, I'm sure. But not good for the public health. And the first person that tests positive down here and all this goes up in smoke. It has gotten so bad throughout the state that Governor DeSantis has asked Trump to place restrictions on domestic travel and I don't blame him!

Well they can buy mine! We are about to put our house on the market but I'm worried whether it will sell or not with the corona virus.

ETA: How close are you, Boz? I'll buy you a beer sometime when socializing isn't taboo anymore.

It will sell, homes haven’t dropped off at all here for some reason.

I’m in Miramar Beach. So very close.
