He's put the weight on too, 248 after coming to Bama at 195.

His height made him look so skinny...

Miller and Lewis played the same position. Losing one would be rough, but both in game 1 is brutal. I'm guessing they move Evans back outside once he's healthy and allow Holcombe and Mac to work inside with SDH. Tough, tough blow. Wondering if we don't move Moses outside as well to get some depth. Championship years are such a fikle thing, as you need injury luck as much as anything. Clemson loses Mike Williams in 15 and lose a close natty game to us. We lose Eddie Jackson and SDH in 16 and lose a close natty to them. Hope this isn't an omen...

Well, to your point, at least its the first game of the season instead of right before playoff time.

If we had to lose guys that is the best place we are loaded with OLB and ILB who can play both. I truly think we are ok.

Blows man. Miller finally gets his opportunity and it's gone just like that. He's obviously worked his arse off. Looks totally different physically from his freshman year. Lewis pound for pound might be the most talented guy on the roster. Just hate it for those guys.

Fortunately they'll both get medical redshirts

Miller already used a RS so he'd have to apply for a 6th year after his 5th is over. Doubt that happens. 2018 will likely be his last year. And Lewis will go pro before he ever needs a 5th year here, so really nothing gained. We just lost them for this year. Sucks bad.

Updating Rashaan Evans' status following groin injury | al.com
quote:

While Saturday was a tough night for Alabama injury-wise, one positive note is that the groin injury suffered by star linebacker Rashaan Evans isn't serious, AL.com has learned.

Though it's possible the senior could miss some time during this upcoming stretch that begins with matchups against Fresno State and Colorado State, Evans' injury is just a strain...

This is super incorrect. Medical Redshirts and regular Redshirts have nothing to do with each other.

Both of the aforementioned LBs who are injured for the year will both receive medical redshirts for this year, and it's basically automatic. Whether they end up using all of their eligibility is another matter.

Miller already used a RS and is currently a RS junior. He only has 1 more year of eligibility left. You are only granted a medical redshirt if 1) you haven't taken a RS yet or 2) your first RS was due to an injury. In the case of 2 the NCAA grants you a 6th year of eligibility. Miller already used a non-medical related RS and because of that wouldn't qualify for a medical RS. He will miss the season and play his final year next year as a RS senior. Lewis on the other hand has not used a RS so he can be given a medical RS.

A person can receive a medical RS after receiving a regular redshirt - no problem. However, a person cannot receive a medical RS in the same year he receives a regular RS.

Additionally, a first request for a medical RS, assuming the injury is season-ending and the player played less the 30% of the season, is basically automatic. However, a second request for medical RS, i.e. a second medical RS year, is VERY hard to get.

I respect your opinion, but I roundly disagree with your interpretation if the rules.

I'm scouring the internet for info on this topic, and it's hard to find. However, I've come across enough to admit that I might be wrong. Having already taken a RS may make getting a medical RS more difficult. The rules are weird.

I agree that a person can get a medical redshirt after receiving a redshirt.

In the case of Miller in order to use a medical RS that would give him 2 more years of eligibility which would require him to apply for a 6th year of eligibility. The rules wording say it's "both redshirts due to circumstances that are not within the players control". Being redshirted to develop and not because of injury wouldn't allow him to qualify for the 6th year in this case.

I totally respect your opinion and everyone else's which is why it's fun to come on here and talk Bama with a bunch of Bama fans. So no worries there.

If im wrong that would be awesome because 2 more years of Miller is gonna be scary for opponent offenses

As I currently read it, a medical hardship waiver can be granted by the ncaa if a player is injured during any of the 4 (5 years to play 4) years he participates in college football, or in his senior year of HS football.

Despite conflicting websites, I don't think having previously taken a regular redshirt precludes a player from applying for and getting a medical hardship waiver, or medical redshirt.

But 2 years of medical hardship waiver is almost impossible to get.

Agreed. He definitely has one more year (of his 5 years to play 4) left from his previous RS. If he gets a med RS then that would give him 2 more years of eligibility (hence 6 years to play 4 -- and the need to apply for a 6th year). If it didn't give him 2 more years then it would be a waste of time to even bother applying.
