Okay stop. The guy averaged nearly 22 ppg on absurd efficiency last year.

Yes, he did fantastic. Also, I think my "more of a role player than star" line was a bit too dramatic. My point is he's not going to be a 22 ppg scorer on this team because he does not need to be. His value is going to be in crunch time where you want a veteran guard to keep the offense from going off the rails. Many such cases of very talented teams going down in the tournament because their guards are young and lose their head.

Sears is going to have to adjust though. That's a fact. He's not going to be as ball dominant this year because there are more people who can create their own basket this year. Remember, basically Sears and Estrada were the only two guys who could consistently create their own shot. And Estrada was sometimes a blackhole, so it was up to Sears to create shots for himself and others.

This is such a great blessing to have: 2 young guards paired with a senior who has started for 4 seasons.

im not even worried about Marks offense.. we know he will get it figured out.

But his defense has not been good. His DBPM is 0.1 where as last year it was 1.3 which isn't great but its better than 0.1

Right, what we need from Mark Sears is for him to become Kyle Lowry on both sides of the ball. I've always thought his offensive game was very "Lowry-like" but Lowry was one of the best guard defenders in the NBA for many years even as a bit undersized guard for the NBA level.

Sometimes when you aren't as involved on offense, subconsciously your defensive engagement goes down. He's going to have to be mindful and engaged on both sides of the court in this new roster arrangement

Estrada's strongest assets weren't his ability to create his own shot, it was his hustle. So even when he wasn't scoring, he was helping us win.

Yeah, he had to be one of the top hard hat winners last year. Loved that guy. Never got why people were so critical of him because he wasn't a 5-tool player, so to speak, as a guard.

Also a big thing for us is Cliff staying out of foul trouble. When he is on the floor we are a good defense, and when he is off of the floor we are about what we were last year defensively.

Illinois made their big run in the 2nd half when Cliff was on the bench with 4 fouls in the 2nd half.

Sometimes big foul trouble is due to bad team defense putting the rim defender in bad positions that lead to fouls being assessed.

There are very few bigs in the NCAA that test a big's individual defense. They're usually getting caught dealing with the consequences of a blow by on the perimeter.

Keeping Cliff out of foul trouble/Sherrell developing quickly and just kind of figuring out the rotation and lineups are the only real issues I've seen thus far. We're getting good looks all the time and sometimes they just haven't been falling for us. When you face a gauntlet schedule that's going to mean some losses. That's just reality.

Additionally, Labaron Philon is my spirit animal. He should definitely stay here for another year after this. He won't, but he should because I'd enjoy it.

I think this will get better as the season goes on, not because Sears will necessarily be quicker or better defensively, but because Cliff is brand new to playing drop coverage like this. He'll learn how to recover the right way. Grant's gotten really good at it.

Solid win. Good news is we can still be an offensive machine with Mark being a net negative. Bad news is we don't need that to become the norm. Philon and Holloway were fantastic. Philon is a joy to watch. Cliff's adjustment to our defensive style is definitely a work in progress.

Make a frickin shot Jarin.

Oats will give Stevenson's minute to Sherrell.

I mean, I guess 1/7 is mathematically better than 0/16.

If all players return

starter

Philon
Sears
Youngblood
Nelson
Omoruyi

bench

Aden
Trelly
Reid
Mo D
Sherrell

out of the rotation

Stevenson

We can't use 11 players. Eventually, someone will not be able to play. It's Stevenson. There are many players who can replace him.

It's crazy to me because I watched him do star shooting drills at the G League combine and hit like 20 threes in a row. And it's not like anyone is blocking his shot at 6'11" when he catches it in the corner wide open.

It seems pretty obvious to me that some guys are just pressing more than they need to. Lots of depth with only 200 minutes available every night means you have to fight hard to stay on the floor.

But the one you chose above, Sherrill, has only played the 5. Cliff and Grant are the other 2 players to play the 5 so far.

I've not really seen Stevenson play the 5. He's always been played at the 4, where Grant starts and Derrion Reid is the other to play there. Mo maybe but I think Oats prefers the corner 3 spacer from that position.

If Stevenson plays less, those minutes go to Grant (he played more minutes last night) and Derrion Reid.
