Damn - Is there a bigger political frick up than Jeff Sessions and how he handled the so-called Russia investigation?

Sessions' frick up was taking the AG appointment. His prominent position in the Trump campaign made it impossible for him to do anything that wouldn't be viewed through an entirely political lens.

Funny thing is that both views of Sessions' conduct during the Russia thing are right. He was right to recuse because of his close ties to the president. The mess spun off into outer space because he recused.

As an attorney I suspect he couldn't resist the lure of being US AG but he should have known better than to put himself in that position.

He always said it was his dream job.

His mistake was jumping into the Trump campaign. He could have just endorsed Trump and appeared at a few campaign rallies, and left it at that. He maybe wouldn't have gotten the AG role though.

NOt really. Trump firing Comey was the catalyst to the Mueller appointment. I know there was the expectation for Sessions to intervene and protect Trump, but for all of Sessions's faults he's always struck me as being ethical, and doing so would have been highly unethical.

This whole thing is really a case study in how Trump uses people for his own gain, and tosses them aside once they are no longer of use to him. Loyalty is a one-way street for him.

Sessions did a great many good things while being the AG for Trump. The best among them were the two prosecutors he appointed to handle a number of investigations that are still in process. The prosecutor that became known publicly, John Huber, was handling the child sex trafficking and had been assigned the HRC Arkansas investigation that was later transferred to the other "hidden from the public eye" prosecutor.

Huber is responsible for the largest portions of some 170,000 sealed indictments. His portion of those indictments are largely centered on the child trafficking issues.

The second prosecutor Sessions appointed was allowed to do his work undisturbed as he was not known to the press/public.John Durham's appointment did not become know to the press/public until after Bill Barr became the AG. Rod Rosenstein was not even aware what Sessions had going with DUrham.

Sessions is a good man. Sessions happens to be an Auburn fan so issues of Auburn man Sessions vs Auburn man Tubberville are a bit silly. The choice Sessions made to recuse was the correct choice but he used improper law application to support the choice. The man who provided him the incorrect law was Rod Rosenstein. Session's mistake was allowing Rosenstein to be the man in charge of the Mueller investigation as he should have been recused as well - he was an informed witness in an investigation he was overseeing. The Sessions mistake cost Trump 2 years of effective leadership and cost the US $30 plus million dollars in chasing a fake charge. Rosenstein knew it was fake when Mueller started building his team.

Tubberville election now is a good thing. It was time to move beyond Sessions. Richard Shelby will need to be replace in 2 more years. Shelby will be almost 90 years old. We need to have a semi-stable conservative voice in Washington when the other Senator from Alabama will also be new.

My hope is Tubberville will be the Semi-stable conservative voice and at the moment I am hoping Robert Aderholt steps up to replace Shelby (two alternates Bradley Byrne or Gary Palmer).

Maybe Shelby's replacement can be that voice, but there was absolutely nothing from Tuberville's campaign that should give anyone confidence he's going to be that voice. It's one of the most vacuous campaigns I've ever seen. It's mind blowing he actually made the runoff, much less won the runoff. But having lived in Alabama as long as I have, I guess it shouldn't be surprising.

I am attempting to stack the deck on Tubbie. Pulled some strings and got my daughter and interview to possibly join his staff. She is a strong, young conservative voice that would tug him to the right.

Tubbie was acting under advice to keep his mouth shut and not give the left any gaffs to beat on him with. The Trump coattails were his ticket to the race, Sessions was hobbled. Now he will have to start making a case for "Why Me" but the Cali Dem money flooding in for Jones has limited info to dig on and attack.

I'd find that pretty insulting as a voter, but that's just me.

Had Tubbie gone head-to-head in open debate with Sessions, Sessions would have wiped the floor with him and gotten him so bloody the left attack machine would finish him off. I have known and supported Sessions for many years, he can be vicious in a knife fight and that is what he wanted.

I such a case, the best thing you can do is be quiet til it is time to talk.

Tubbie is a classic used car salesman. He has the gift of gab. His foundation is conservative but his public political persona is weak. Loyalty is a big deal to Tubbie. That loyalty is a big part of what got him in trouble with the Auburn power people. He would not dump people they wanted him to dump just to save his own job.

Instead, Tubbie used his agent (a strong relationship) to beat the Auburn money/power people at their own game...sounds like a politician in the making to me.

Nor anyone that voted for him.

Imagine going to a job interview and not answering any questions and still getting the job offer. Nobody here would hire someone that did that, but many will vote for one to be a US Senator.

Perhaps he'll now actually give his credentials for being a US Senator beyond God, Guns, and Trump.

I interned for Aderholt way back in the day. He seemed to be such a quiet back-bench type of guy. Does he really have the clout now to step up to the Senate? I know he has been in the House for a long time.

Should that really be surprising? Kay Ivey received over 50% of the vote in the Republican Primary in 2018 after refusing to debate her fellow R challengers. Alabama just can never get out of its own way.
