You've been quite clear that you want Pruitt, and you don't want Golding. Every attempt to explain to you why Golding (and Saban) may be doing the things they're doing has been brushed aside with "the defense was better under Pruitt."

No, I haven't. I'm explaining why one approach works better than another. Pruitt is getting well-compensated in Knoxville land. They may very well have to eat that buyout for another year anyway. And I haven't spoken to Nick lately to get his innermost thoughts on a change at DC.

Pretty much why you are a victim of your own wild imagination on this summation.

Mississippi started the game converting 4 of the first 5 on third-down conversions.

Yep, and then proceeded to convert 2 of the next 8 with one of those conversions being via penalty. Why do the first 5 matter more than the next 8?

had 476 total yards and 279 on the ground against the Tide

Interesting that you point out that they converted 4 of their 5 first downs and ignore their total lack of success the rest of the time the game was competitive and then use their total yardage to support that position yet ignore that 228 of the 476 came on their LAST 5 POSSESSIONS when they were training by 35 points and many Bama starters were on the bench.

No optical ilussions on why we wore down in the 4th quarter.

So you're saying the guys that came into the game in the 3rd for the starters that left (see SoG's thread for a list) weren't ready for the heat? Ok. I'll take your word for it. I have no idea if guys like DJ Dale were ready to go or not because they were not in the game.

quote:

How does that stuff translate against teams standing in front of where we want to go?

In 2017 we were leading Clemson 24-14 going into the 4th quarter. On the 99th defensive play of the game we gave up the 21st point in the 4th quarter and lost the NC.

There's a gulf the size of the Pacific ocean between a 10 point lead starting the 4th and a THIRTY FIVE point lead early in the 3rd. The first you're still in a dogfight. The second you're building depth for the time when you're in that 4th quarter fight.

So what does it mean? It means the guys that back up the 1s aren't ready to play particularly effectively yet. Not a surprise since several of the guys now starting were supposed to be the backups.

It means the staff better use every opportunity to get them snaps so that they will hopefully be ready when Bama gets in a late dogfight.

It means that while the starters could have probably played a couple more series and kept the final to a fan-pleasing 59-17 or so, the staff knew it was more important to get those other guys in the game, see how they hold up, and work on fixing the deficiencies. I for one am glad they made the choice they did.

We have a middle of the road defense with elite CB' s and it isn't an illusion. Easily the worst defense since 07 and we just have to wait and see if they can improve as the year goes on.

That's a fair assessment. The lack of depth in particular is a very serious problem. They aren't great right now and probably won't end up being considered great, but they haven't been hot garbage when it mattered either.

I think this is TBD. Despite the record, 2013 and 2014 had some very glaring weaknesses too. Gotta see how it all plays out before I'll be willing to place them.

McKinney ain't too bad either. So that only leaves 8 positions of mediocrity.

Well dammit you’ve convinced me, Golding should be tossed because of his defense costing us the 2017 NC!

Whattaya mean he wasn’t DC back then? Who was?

Not to mention it wasn’t entirely the D’s fault Clemson ran 99 plays...

I am really confused on why Lee is our LB in pass coverage defenses...

Because sometimes when you’re in pass coverage defense teams will actually decide to run the ball.
