re: For those who have coaching backgrounds; what needs to be done to fix our Defense?

For starters, coach our DBs out of wrapping their arms around the WR's waist. It makes PI an extremely easy call. That should be easily fixable. Drill them every day until they get out of the habit. Hold them accountable in practice when they do it.

After having time to sit back after that loss and trying to process how bad the defense played, I can give my thoughts.
First and foremost, I like Golding and think he has had some good moments but yesterday was a disaster. I’m going to tie Saban into this, because at the end of the day he still oversees the defense.
So, I’ve preached this and it finally showed yesterday. Moore is just not the same player anymore since the injury, we have to move Kool-Aid to the slot in dime and have Ricks outside. Absolutely no reason for us to continue having safeties playing in the slot, it has literally killed us. Hellams is a thumper and is good with things in front of him, we can’t continue to have him isolated on speedsters.
For the love of God, why is Dallas Turner in coverage? I truly believe that the coaches out smart themselves at times instead of just keeping things simple. Being stubborn is one of the main reasons we see games like yesterday, no in game adjustments, just keep doing the same things and just hoping we can pull it out in the end.

That actually sounds good. Why haven't we tried Kool-Aid in the slot?
Heck put Terrion out there because he is showing us he can't handle being out on the island.

I don't know. But I NEVER want to see Anderson, Turner, or Braswell dropping into coverage. Never, ever, ever again.

14 was still pretty good close the los. We have a lot of dbs who can't really cover.

Getting roasted like we did vs UT, I would've just played man free starting the 2nd half, and tried to rattle Hooker. I would've put 11 on the line of scrimmage if I had to. Kool-Aid and Ricks at corners, and I would've blitzed the star every fricking 3rd down. The few times we did get to him, he missed throws (Kool-aid's int was on a pass Hooker was flushed from the pocket). I know he would've hit some throws, but he did that anyway. There's no way it would've been any worse, and who knows, if you get Hooker rattled and happy feet, he might have gotten a little trigger shy and thrown it to the guys in Crimson. Hooker is no world beater at QB. Tenner won't score 30 on Kirby's defense, because Kirby knows when to blitz and how to adjust. I doubt tenner scores more than 24.
I'd be willing to bet that Kirby is going to play a lot of man vs Tenner and will probably force some turnovers.
And whoever said Pruitt was a better defensive coordinator than Kirby is braindead.

Thanks for saying this. I have been saying this for a long time now and some hate me for it lol.

Sort of a moot point about which was better, anyways. Looks like Pruitt is done as a coach. He's radioactive, not hireable in the foreseeable future.

The "defense shake-up" personnel wise against MS State appears to have been Dime package centric.
The first move made was to replace 3 with 7. Ricks played well and largely killed the back shoulder game to the right side.
Second we went to a 4 safety box Dime - Cover Two / Man with 9/2/13/14. 13 & 14 did a pretty good job as nickle and dime backs in man coverage but they were not having to deal with the blazing speed they saw against UT last week.
The third move was to go 3-2 cougar up front. They had 31/41 as the D-ends and 10 (mike) 15 (will). On likely run downs they swapped 47 for 41 and 42 for 15. 15 at will was odd. Sometimes he would go next to 41 or 31. Some times he would blitz between the guards. Other times he would drop into coverage as the will. When it came time to play the run as the will, he was a bit clunky. 15 played about 1-1/2 yards deeper than 10 on run sets to give him a little more time to read the plays. 15 was consistently slow in run support allowing 2+ extra yards on run play success. He might eventually do well in this roll but needs much more time in the saddle before he is truly ready to ride.
15 is a far better man than I ever was. I attempted to make the move from "Sam" to "Mike" back in the day. I could not handle the change. Threats/action coming from every direction at the same time rather than all of the action coming from the inside. Having to think so much slowed my play down to the point I was useless.

The delayed blitzes continue to be a head scratcher. Most QB’s make a three step drop and the ball is out. So many times 10 hits the line of scrimmage with the ball already in the air. Maybe Golding likes it because it works again BoB’s slow developing pass routes in summer camp.

GOnna be interesting to see what personnel we will see in Nickle formation against LSU.
