Top targets planning (or likely) to commit soon:

(Updated -- Removed Myles Murphy and added Nadab Joseph.)

4-star DB/WR Joel Williams 6-1.5/180 LA hudl
-- Appears on the verge of announcing any day.

4-star S/CB Xavion Alford 6-0.5/188 TX hudl
-- "Coach Saban, every time I go up there, he makes it clear that he really wants me... It could be today, tomorrow, a month from now, it could be real soon.”

4* CB Nadab Joseph 6-2/180 Juco hudl
-- Hank said said he thinks 1 or 2 of Joel Williams, Xavion Alford or Nadab Joseph may pop next.

4-star ATH Kristian Story 6-1/206 AL hudl
-- Announcing July 18.

4-star DL Jaquelin Roy 6-3.5/289 LA hudl
-- Announcing July 26, 7-pm.

5* RB Kendall Milton 6-2/220 CA hudl *
-- Announcing July 29 at 7 pm. It appears he'll commit to UGA.

4-star WR EJ Williams 6-3.5/192 AL hudl *
-- By late August. At The Opening Finals on June 30, he said Bama is #1 and Clemson #2. But the concensus among 247 analysts is that he's still trending to Clemson. He camped at Clemson in June and said he plans to attend their "All In" big recruiting event the last weekend in July.

Top targets who might commit this summer:

5-star RB Zachary Evans 5-11/200 TX hudl
-- Has said he may commit before FB season, but has also said he'll take as long as he needs to be sure of his decision.

4-star ILB Jordan Banks 6-1/228 CA hudl
-- Came to the cookout and camp in June. Bama has been his leader since the June 2018 cookout. Hank said his offer is committable, but also said in his post-visit article that Banks is targeting a late Nov decision. Maybe he'll decide to commit sooner, to avoid Bama running out of room for him.

4-star DE Myles Murphy committed to UNC this afternoon, as expected.

As mentioned the other day UNC felt good about this one and hopes it is the start of a few dominoes. Again my hope is Brown can lock down the state and keep CU out.

A win over Clemson?

According to 247Sports, Clemson didnt offer Myles Murphy from NC. They already have a great DL haul committed. It looks like they may just be trying to land one more they really want, Jordan Burch.

So if Evans lands at TAMU and Milton at UGA...who's our top target to fill out our RB class? Really hope we can find a way to land one of those two guys.

Bama may still be in the lead for Evans.

There are lots of twists and turns as well as speculation and misinformation in recruiting. Just because some recruiting reporter has an opinion about who leads or is trending for a recruit doesn't mean it's an accurate assessment.

According to some UGA fans, Rusty is generally pretty plugged into the state of Georgia, but not so much OOS.

And Wiltfong often flip-flops around on a lot of his predictions based on whatever the latest twist or turn may be, such as a post-visit high.

Evans recently visited Texas and ATM, so that might be all that's happened that triggered Rusty and Wiltfong to say they think Evans is now more likely to pick ATM.

ETA: Evans didn't go to The Opening despite it's proximity to his home, and said it was because of a family matter. He also very rarely gives interviews. The last one appears to have been in May when 247 reporter Chris Hummer went to his school. So it's quite possible that Rusty and Wiltfong haven't talked to him recently, if ever.

ETA: "I think there's a feeling that some in his camp want him to stay within the state. Also in this type of recruitment I don't think it's much of surprise if more than one side has optimism going. Nothing's really changed in terms of how the Alabama side feels about it though. But again, long way to go." - Hank

Yep.

And I think a lot of my posts -- whether they're good or bad news for Bama -- get downvoted by RiverCityTider, just because he hates me.

Could 5-star twin towers play together at Alabama or Auburn?

quote:

At 6-foot-7½ and 260 pounds, Desert Pines (Nev.)’s Darnell Washington stood out when lined up with other receivers last week at The Opening Finals recruiting showcase in Frisco, Texas.

So did Arik Gilbert, a 6-foot-5½, 250-pound receiver, from Marietta (Ga.).

The twin towers have talked about playing college football together, Gilbert said, even before spending time together at The Opening.

“He was like, ‘Yo, where are you going to school?’ I’m like, ‘Bro, if we go to school together, that’d be crazy,’” said Gilbert, referring to conversations the two have had via Twitter. “So, yeah, we’ve been talking about it.

“We’ve got similar games, but we can line up on different sides of the field and be threats,” Gilbert added. “They can’t double both of us, obviously. They’d have to make a decision.”

Gilbert and Washington showed remarkable agility and polished route running during 1-on-1 drills and 7on7 action at The Opening Finals, posing matchup problems by being too big for defensive backs and too quick for most linebackers. Neither has made a public commitment.

Both are rated as five-star prospects, with Washington currently ranked as the No. 11 overall, according to the 247sports Composite Rankings, and Gilbert is next at No. 12. They are ranked 1-2 in the national athlete rankings, although both project as tight ends in college.

Gilbert and Washington have each released a list of finalists, with Alabama and Auburn on both athletes’ list. Other finalists they share include Georgia, LSU and Tennessee.

Alabama, of course, sent tight end Irv Smith to the NFL as a second-round pick last year and O.J. Howard as a first-rounder in 2017.

It’s easy to project Washington or Gilbert as a standout pass-rushing defensive end, but it appears both prefer offense.

“I just want to go wherever a team feels like it can get me the ball, to be honest,” Gilbert said. “I can line up as a tight end or receiver and create matchup problems.”

How Alabama’s coaching turnover impacted recruiting

quote:

Julian Fleming, the nation’s No. 1-ranked wide receiver in the Class of 2020, strongly considered Alabama and even visited Tuscaloosa earlier this year.

Fleming, though, chose not to follow in the footsteps of NFL stars Julio Jones, Amari Cooper and Calvin Ridley and instead chose Ohio State.

What happened with Alabama?

“Their coaching has been inconsistent,” Fleming said last week at The Opening Finals recruiting showcase in Frisco, Texas. “I’ve been recruited by two, three coaches there. You know, I want someone I can rely on.”

Nick Saban’s coaching staff has endured massive coaching turnover in each of the last two offseasons, including the addition of seven new coaches for the 2019 season.

“That’s a stepping stone for coaches now,” Fleming said. “They’re going to Alabama and they’re moving up, because that’s just the process they go through. You know, Nick Saban is going to be there and is going to be reliable, but ultimately it was about I needed someone to coach me.”

Fleming isn’t the only prospect put-off by Alabama’s coaching turnover.

Quarterback Carson Beck, a 4-star prospect from Jacksonville, Florida, was committed to Alabama for months, but de-committed in February and picked Georgia about a month later. He said Alabama’s coaching volatility contributed to his flip.

“Whenever all the offensive staff started leaving,” Beck said, “and I was like, ‘I have no one to talk to. I don’t know any of these guys. I really don’t have a relationship with them.’”

Elite prospects spend time developing relationships with position coaches and recruiting coordinators throughout the recruiting process, which can begin as early as their freshman year of high school. Coaching turnover can distort a school’s core message even if the head coach remains entrenched.

At Alabama, prospects understand Saban’s philosophy and track record of sending players to the NFL remain constant, but that hasn’t always mitigate the Crimson Tide’s coaching turnover.

Of course, Alabama’s Class of 2020 currently consists of 20 players and ranks No. 2 nationally – trailing only national champ Clemson -- according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. That shows the coaching turnover hasn’t been catastrophic.

“Coach Saban broke it down to me like they have a lot of coaching changes, but it’s because they’re getting better jobs,” said uncommitted Central-Phenix City receiver E.J. Williams. “You see Mike Locksley, he went to Maryland and got the head coaching job. Josh Gattis, he was the past wide receiver coach and he went to Michigan and got the offensive coordinator job. It’s not like they’re just leaving and down grading.

So Fleming decided to commit to Ohio State and Ryan Day over Alabama and Nick Saban because he needs someone to coach him?

ETA: The Ohio State WR coach is Brian Hartline. He has one year of coaching experience as an on the field coach. Last year as an interim at OSU.
