Looks like Saban is trying people at a few different spots.

Trying to keep the multiple defense concept(s) without having to do wholesale substitutions between plays.
We should have the depth and diversity in talent and skillset, but the question is does this new direction simplify the defense or make it even more complicated?

quote:sort of. with sims it was more of a matter of him being able to avoid sacks. and make plays form scrambling. we didnt really do much in the way of called qb runs, to avoid injury
Plus we're simplifying everything, and if we intend to continue being a HUNH offense, his running ability is a huge plus.

--Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (pulled muscle) was back with his position group after missing a few day. Humphrey worked with the second defensive group.
Wide receiver Chris Black (ankle) didn't run any routes during the media's viewing period.
On Wednesday, Tide coach Nick Saban said the team is taking it "day-to-day" to see how each responds to an increased workload.
--Alabama's secondary worked on some of its sub packages again today. The first group had Cyrus Jones and Anthony Averett at the cornerback spots while Eddie Jackson and Geno Smith lined up at the safety spots. Reuben Foster was the lone linebacker. Maurice Smith and freshman Minkah Fitzpatrick filled the star and money roles. Saban praised Fitzpatrick on Wednesday for his ability to learn quickly and understand concepts.
--The second group appeared to be working the nickel package with Marlon Humphrey and Bradley Sylve at the corners and Tony Brown at star. Ronnie Harrison and Laurence "Hootie" Jones were the safeties with Shaun Dion Hamilton and Dillon Lee at linebacker.
--Quarterback Cooper Bateman threw separately to the tight ends at one point during the viewing. He later rejoined the quarterbacks and threw to the receivers.
--Outside linebacker Tim Williams had his thigh/quad wrapped, but he wasn't limited in any way.
--Defensive lineman Josh Frazier appeared to tweak his ankle during a drill, and had to be looked at by a trainer. Frazier returned to the drills shortly after, but had a slight limp.
I'd like to take this moment to thank Jameis Winston for being such a screw off. Without him, we'd be reading these praise reports about Minkah on FSU sites.

Not one was a Center. Not one was a TE. Not one was a DT. Not one was a FS. What's your point?
When a FR is the best at a position, he'll play. They've not had a situation yet where a FR was the best option at QB (or the other positions I've mentioned), but you can bet that when they do Saban will play him.

This x1000. Folks looking at track record need to only answer one question. When has Saban NOT played the best option at QB? Many thought Coker was the no-brainer answer at this time last year.
Remember the pressers last year where Saban would say Blake has looked good out there too, after answering a question about Coker? That's what I would listen for following these upcoming scrimmages. Cause right now, I think the only thing that's 100% certain is that Cooper Bateman will not be the guy.
Stephen Smith (TD Alabama guy) recently compared Coker to a less-experienced Bo Wallace. TIFWIW, but just think about all the talk about Coker's inconsistencies, and think back to Good Bo/Bad Bo.

CNS will play the best player regardless of class, but we shouldn't pretend like QB is like any other position. It requires so much more maturity and knowledge of the playbook that it lends itself more to older, more experienced players than any other position. I mean, how often do you see a true freshman QB start at any SEC school? Not often.
So I agree that CNS wouldn't discount a freshman to start at any position, I just think it's extremely unlikely to happen at QB

I would rather run Wildcat every snap than have Good Jake/Bad Jake

something does not compute with your logic. the QB is the most important player on the team and I doubt a true frosh will be given the reins. Most true freshmen do not start for NS but become roll players or on ST

You guys ever wonder how Denzel Devall starts every year lol. I mean his body never changes or anything. He must know the playbook like the back of his hand.

Wow Bo Scarborough looks gimpy as hell imo. Hope they sit him out a very long time.

His recovery has been extremely fast to be doing as much as he is. Really hope they give it time to fully heal and strengthen. Hopefully the other 3 backs can handle the load this year.

Unfortunately it sounds like nobody is actually "beating" Coker out. So we have a bunch of Bo's?
On the other hand, Bo Wallace beat us with less weapons and a good defense.
Basically, everyone stop bitchin

Nobody really knows. Saban keeps everything close.

every practice report I have seen has Coker running with the ones. So I would be very surprised if he did not start game one. After that who knows based on how he does under pressure. and I would be surprised if NS released the QB stats after the first scrimmage. He wants them to stay hungry

ArDarius Stewart article:
LINK
quote:
“He’s probably been our most consistent guy out there in terms of ability to execute,” Saban said. “He’s making plays every day. I think his confidence is growing, and I think he’s the next guy that we need to sort of be the man when it comes to playing receiver and playing with consistency.
“Quarterbacks can develop confidence in some guys that they can go to, and he's certainly done a good job of that so far.”
...
“I think we saw ArDarius kind of make a transition in a year there. There was even a time when we really had him as the third receiver — I want to say the Mississippi State game, where we were trying to get him the ball and he got injured and didn’t end up finishing the year how we would have liked,” Tide offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said. “But ArDarius is as talented, probably the most talented guy that we have, and has made some significant plays even in games or during the spring. We’ve just got to get him to take it to the next level so he can be an every-down player.”
