They would have to play a season at the BJCC which is a problem.

But only for one season. It's worth it for an amazing, state of the art arena.

edit: I didn't realize BJCC was being renovated.

Given the way it's constructed, how can you have a dome-like roof with the existing building?

The other problem is that if you're in the top rows, you're a helluva long way from the game. As the rows get higher, they go out and away from the court instead of up.

They were gutting the inside so anything that exists now you can forget about. Plus, if there are fewer seats, there will be fewer rows. I suspect there will be a steeper incline. (I hope the dont make it fewer than 12,000 seats)

With an 80+ million dollar loss in the athletic dept, that wont help the cause. Its a good thing we didnt cave in with the northern schools-regarding football, or everything would be off the table.

I believe the expected capacity after the proposed renovations was around 11-12k.

That said, I'll be surprised if this gets done in the next 5 years unless there's a massive economic recovery bill out of DC that makes the bond market attractive, or accessible federal grants. I doubt a basketball arena would fall under any grant proposals though.

The original proposal back in 2018 was for capacity between 9,500-10,000. It included moving the closest seats which are currently 17ft away from the court 10ft closer and creating an upper tier so the seats higher up were also much closer to the court.

We aren't getting a new arena. Best we can hope for is the renovation proposal from a year or so ago.

I think that Greg is a VERY VERY smart man... He'll work with boosters, the administration, Coach Oats, and Coach Saban to figure out a water to A) keep Oats happy, and B)to upgrade our facilities...

He KNOWS that he has a truly ELITE gem on his hands in Oats and will do everything possible to keep him... I can guarantee you that he's working behind the scenes to do just that... But timing is everything... I say that because, if Oats is at Bama for the foreseeable future then the huge investment will pay dividends... Elite basketball coaches don't grow on trees... But if Bama makes a 400 million dollar investment, and by some chance Oats leaves for greener pastures, then Bama could be in serious financial trouble...

Now, I'm not saying that this project will be based entirely upon Coach Oats' commitment to Bama BUT it's definitely a factor... As it stands, Bama is in superb financial shape.. But they have to tread carefully and WISELY here... Being a very smart athletic director, Byrne knows this better than any of us..

Much like the way one puts a dome on a otherwise rectangular or square building. But, the shape of the roof would have to be changed so that the dome could be fitted in place. It would only consist of a portion of the roof like a capital dome, except the dome would be much flatter.

I don't know how to post pictures, but here is an example of what I am talking about. It would actually make the building quite unique and cool.

I attended my last game at Coleman on a last minute whim on a recruiting trip for daughter. We bought tickets a couple of hours before the game and ended up in the nosebleed section off one of the corners of the court behind the Bama bench. The seats were AWFUL with poor sight lines, dark, etc. It was like watching a movie from the worst seat in the theater. Had a good time (it was the Missou game last year where they couldn’t miss a free throw) and saw the W but was thoroughly disappointed and disgusted with Coleman.

Yeah, seats above around row 40 are pretty bad, especially in the corners. If I can't get tickets in the row 15-30 areas, I generally won't go. Or in the first 10 or so row behind the baskets.

Nothing will happen to Coleman until the BJCC is finished where we can play a season there.
