Did Wommack run a true 4-2-5 this year?

Just curious... Many times, it seemed like we only ran 3 down linemen.

I don't think so but I don't think it's a strech to say our front 7 talent sucks.

Saying the talent sucks may not be accurate. Saying the development sucks may be a better way to put it.

Read into that what you will.

Can't agree with that. There's plenty of talented dudes in the 'Bama front 7. But they were all recruited for a totally different system and were taught by one of the best defensive coaches to ever set foot on the sidelines.

They settled in throughout the year and the defense was playing great football to end the season imo. I'd expect a big jump in consistency next season after a year+ in Wommack's system.

Very rarely. We honestly played more of a 3-3-5 this year.

Some of yall are way too hard on Wommack and this defense. They had one bad game (Vandy) and one bad half (Georgia). Outside of that, they were pretty fricking solid all year.

Top 15 in turnover margin
Top 15 scoring

And I'll trade sacks for turnovers everyday of the week.

Um, no. Heck no.

The only team that gave up more rushing yards to Oklahoma than Bama was the…checks notes…5-7 Maine Black Bears (and that doesn’t even take into account the short fields or consecutive Bama possessions due to Milroe’s picks). Temple, Houston, Tulane, Navy, 5-7 AU, and 6 other teams gave up fewer rushing yards than Wommack’s defense did in the blowout to OU. It was absolutely embarrassing, and getting punked by Vandy and OU in the run game is largely the reason we were left out of the playoffs. Completely inexcusable to get destroyed on the line of scrimmage by Vandy and a terrible OU offense.

It seems to be a bend don’t break defense. It’s not about the yards but limit the points. The defense didn’t do a bad job against OU, the offense and specifically Jalen did.

Yeah. Alabama clearly lost that game because of the defense. You are a special kind of stupid.

The whole offense had a bad game, but OU’s defense was good (totally inexcusable for Prentice to allow a pick on a screen pass due to not blocking). The OU offense wasn’t good at all, and had been shut down by much less formidable foes all season (Houston gave up 75 yards rushing to OU and almost beat them). “Bend but don’t break” is a stupid style of defense that has literally never won a national championship in my memory, and sounds a lot like an excuse for a team that doesn’t have the physicality to own the line of scrimmage. It also doesn’t work when they’re driving on you every drive, eating up the clock, wearing you down (hence you break), and keeping the other team’s defense fresh by giving them rest while your offense sits on the sideline unable to establish any form of momentum.

OU’s defense was good, so it was expected that our offense would struggle. OU’s offense was abysmal, and we made them look like Jalen Hurts’ Eagles physically dominating the other team in rushing. They completely owned us physically with a horrible, horrible offense. That’s bad coaching, and what ultimately sealed our fate in that game as the defense should have been stonewalling OU’s offense all night, regardless of field position. If they held OU to under 100 yards rushing like Texas, SC, Tennessee, and Houston did and the refs don’t blow that call, we win that game something like 17-13 or 20-17, even with Milroe’s picks (doubt he throws all 3 if we are actually still in the game and not trying to force things).

Even Missouri and LSU gave up 130 yds or less rushing, and we gave up over 250. It was absolutely embarrassing.

OU could not pass the ball, yet instead of completely shutting down a one dimensional offense, Alabama gave up over 200 yards rushing in one half.

The defense did not lose Alabama the game, horrible defensive play calling surely did not help though.

Bro, when you have to resort to name calling because you don’t understand the details of the game of football, it’s not a good look. Keep quoting the scoreboard and saying the offense was why we lost, it will make you feel better inside. There isn’t a defensive coordinator on the planet worth their salt that thinks our defense wasn’t the most embarrassing part of that game.

Guess how many interceptions Jalen threw in the first half or while we were tied or had the lead? Zero

Guess how many rushing yards we gave up in the first half? More than almost anyone gave up to OU for the entire game, and double what most good defenses gave up for an entire game.

You don’t understand football, but that’s ok. Keep posting away

I agree...the defensive play calling was horrible. We had 3 down lineman when we knew they were gonna run the ball and had been running the ball. Heck I wouldn't have quit running either if the opposing DC ain't gonna change up the defense.

The logic for running 3 down may have been to let the lineman eat blocks playing 2-gap techniques. The hope being that the DL frees up the backers and safeties to play the option runs. Not saying I like 3-3-5 but I can at least make a tactical justification for why they did it.

I didn’t see a lot of adjustments on both sides of the ball this year. It’s like we have a game plan and we going to keep doing it even if it isn’t working.
