Good thing Jefferson is returning. That’s a major deal.

The defense has a chance to be special. 12 of 13 games the defense did really well. Well enough to win.

Guys generally don’t look like themselves that quickly. It’s generally a year-plus for guys to be back moving like before.

Agreed.

11 of 13. The defensive lapses against Vandy were critical but I believe that was a schematic thing against power run option formations.

News on defense is a bright spot. Hope we add a couple more quality players from the portal.

Well we got the edge kid from UF, LB from Colorado, and CB from Utah.

So... does Wommack get credit for these guys coming back?
Does DeBoer?

I'm guessing the guys coming back would either transfer or declare if they thought the team chemistry was bad? Do coaches get credit for making BAMA a place that players want to come back to??

So what is the other game the defense not play well enough for Bama to win?

I’m guessing the second half of the Georgia game in addition to Vanderbilt. Outside of that, I can’t really think of a game that was solely on the defense.

But Bama’s defense played well enough to win because *we won* the UGA game.

I get that. But we gave up 34 points.

I wouldn’t get too upset about the UGA because they were in desperation mode the whole second half. They was not a typical defensive game. You usually don’t have to defend so many 4th down plays.

I’d say both deserve credit.

What I was poorly communicating was that we had two unacceptable defensive showings: Vandy and OU.

Both were the mostly the result of self inflicted schematic related issues. We refused to go heavy DL fronts and were continually outnumbered and outsized as a result which allowed both teams to get ahead of the sticks, convert short third downs and chew clock reducing our possessions to an unsustainable level.

We had other games with serious coverage busts early, but I think that was mostly the result of over aggressive play by Sabb and Smith and improved dramatically once Hubbard came in and frankly with all the new faces back there it was to be expected that we would have some busts as people settled in.

Outside of that option issue I thought the defense was very good considering the new faces and scheme all had to mesh.

The problem with the Georgia game was 100% on not knowing how to manage that lead in the 2nd half. Putting pressure in Beck's face had worked all game but they decided to play more coverage and the few times they went back to pressure they were unlucky or telegraphed it and UGA had the right counter on to burn it.

I don’t blame the defense for losing that Oklahoma game. It wasn’t a great performance, but it was enough to win. That was on the offense. Bama should have been able to score 28 and win that by double digits.
