WR Milton Wright committed to Purdue. We were high on his list at one point.
I wonder why Milton Wright ended up at Purdue. It seems like there would've been strong mutual interest between him and Kentucky.

I agree as the only thing I want to take on offense at this point is Sanders and 2 of the 3 of Neal, Wright, and Webb.

ETA: That's a good thing IMO. We need to load up on DL in this class so I'm fine with using a WR spot on someone like Ika or Ty Robinson.
That's what I figured too with spots being so tight and Wandale committing to UK (i.e., if we passed or didn't flip Pickens then we were probably done at WR).
Having said that, I'm a bit surprised we are only taking one (Metchie) who might even project better on defense. Especially since we only took two last year (Waddle and Xavier Williams (I guess Slade has been playing WR since the fall too)). The 17 class was the best WR haul ever but you have to imagine some of those top three guys will go early (I would figure not all three but one to two of the three) and Chadarius Townsend sounds like he may be moved to defense.
Perhaps this is based on immediate need (DL and LB), what we feel like we can land in 20 at WR (it doesn't take most elite WR a long time to contribute), or perhaps the staff feels really good about Shavers (who flashed in the spring) and Xavier Williams/Slade (who both look like they will redshirt after playing against UL).
Either way, I guess some position was going to be light with us taking two QBs, a kicker, and a heavy DL/OL class. I guess I'd rather have an extra elite DL/OL than a pretty good WR that we likely recruit over in 20.

You're right, it just doesn't make sense to take more WRs in this cycle, given higher priorty needs at other positions.
All of our young talent at WR makes it almost impossible to land top WR talent in this cycle. We're only going to lose Derek Kief and Xavian Marks and then in the 2020 cycle Jeudy, Smith and Ruggs will be juniors who could leave early for the NFL. So, it'll be easier to land better WR prospects in the 2020 class.
Also, Billingsley can play WR until he bulks up to TE weight. Turnage is also a good wide receiver if needed there due to WR injuries. And as you mentioned, WR is a position that it's common for true freshman to play.

Genuinely asking: what's prompting the confidence on Sopsher? Is it still just based on all the buzz we were hearing after he came in for the spring game or cookout or whatever it was?

BOL insider who had the inside scoop on Surtain months before NSD is also tuned into Sopsher's recruitment. He's been saying Ishmael would sign with us for at least 6 months now and he said recently it wasn't even close.

Jeff Brohm has pretty strong ties in the state of Kentucky. With the way they sling the ball, I could see him preferring that to Kentucky's current offense. Plus I think most people don't see Kentucky staying at a 9 or 10 win level. This is kind of a one-off year IMO.

Sopsher's dad and Bama staffer Sam Petito are very close friends. They played HS FB together. With the four DLs we'll be losing, Sopsher has a great opportunity for early playing time at Bama. Sopsher is coming to Bama, but he's not going to give much, if any, indications of it ahead of NSD to avoid harrassment by the crazy segment of LSU fans who feel it's an unforgivable sin for a top LA kid to be a "traitor" by playing at Bama instead of LSU. That problem is real down there.

Kentucky is 2005 Alabama with a mobile QB. They’ll get some recruiting surge from it, but this season was built on having 8 senior starters on defense.

Alabama’s 2019 o-line class has a chance to be a great one
quote:
Alabama’s offensive line showed just how dominant they can be on Saturday versus the LSU Tigers.
This dominance has a chance to continue with the amount of talent the Tide has a chance of bringing in next season.
The Tide’s 2019 offensive line class currently consist of 5-Star offensive tackle, Pierce Quick, and 4-Star recruits: Amari Kight, Tanner Bowles, and Darrian Dalcourt. This group of guys is pretty impressive. Kight and Quick are tackles that could come in and make immediate impacts. Bowles and Dalcourt recruits that will most likely lineup as guards and are very mobile.
The Tide is far from finished with their offensive line class. They have room for possibly two or more commits and they have their eyes on the prize as they still remain in the mix for multiple 5-Star guys. Clay Webb, Evan Neal, and Darnell Wright are all on the Tide’s radar. They are also all 5-Star recruits and are included in our 2019 Most Wanted Recruits list.
Kamaar Bell is another guy to keep an eye on.
With the amount of talent that is still on the board combined with the talent Alabama has verbally committed, the debate of whether this could be the best offensive line Saban has ever pulled in is rising to the forefront. The number of offensive linemen Alabama pulled in per class has been steady for the last nine years. The Tide would land from 3 to 5 offensive lineman in each class from 2010 to 2017. They only pulled in two in their 2018 recruiting class.
Alabama’s largest offensive line class was in 2009 when they pulled in six. This class was highlighted by D.J. Fluker and Chance Womack.
Throughout, Saban’s tenure at Alabama, the Tide has won many games, hoisted the national championship up four times, and had two Heisman winners, but they have never landed multiple 5-Star offensive linemen. To many, landing 5-Star recruits may not seem too important considering the Tide has turned 3-Star and 4-Star guys into megastars. That is true, but the Tide has also had great success at helping 5-Star guys reach their full potential and blossom into NFL stars.
This 2019 offensive line class has the chance to add possibly three 5-Star guys, that could come in and contribute in a possible starting role or serve as a reliable back up.
Rankings and stars are fun to look at it and often gives football fans a snapshot at what a recruit could possibly do, but the only way this class can claim the title as the best Saban has ever pulled in is by proving it on the gridiron.

15 prospects that will be X-factors in Louisiana's prep football playoffs
quote:
The 2018 LHSAA state playoff are kicking off this week and, naturally, several of the state's top prospects will be suiting up to help their teams earn a trip to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Here's the prospects in each bracket that should prove to make a big impact for their teams.

quote:
Jacobian Guilory, DT, Alexandria, 2020
Guillory has a strong argument to be the top prospect in Louisiana’s 2020 class as he is one of the most disruptive players in the state. The defensive tackle saw his recruitment take off this Summer and Spring as he picked up offers from LSU, Texas A&M and Alabama, among several others. Guillory routinely draws double teams and even some triple teams as opposing offenses try to keep him out of their backfield. But even if Guillory isn’t the one making the play, more often than not his secondary, which features an LSU target in safety Ja’Darius "Bud" Clark, is making it difficult on opposing QBs. Ninth-seed Alexandria opens up Friday against Central-Baton Rouge.

John Emery, RB, Destrehan, 2019
One of the nation’s top-ranked running backs, Destrehan’s Emery has been shredding defenses all season. He recently decommitted from Georgia and has repeated since then that he’s focused on getting a championship ring. He's played like it, scoring five touchdowns in the season’s final two weeks. His Wildcats are the second-seed in the Class 5A bracket and open up against Hammond on Friday. Expect a motivated Emery to pad his senior season highlight tape with even more big plays. The pressure from programs like Alabama, Tennessee and of course LSU, who are all vying to land his signature on National Signing Day, is only likely to intensify.

Where things stand with No. 1 overall recruit Kayvon Thibodeaux
quote:
Kayvon Thibodeaux of Thousand Oaks (Calif.) Oaks Christian is the No. 1 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings, and the defensive end finds himself in the headlines again this week.
Thibodeaux has often been in the news as an elite prospect, and Oregon picked up serious momentum after hosting him on a recent visit. With Oregon cleaning up elsewhere in California during the recruiting cycle, the Ducks are trending for Thibodeaux. As the standout defender heads to Florida today for an official visit, 247Sports expert Luke Stampini breaks down where things stand.
“I don’t think it’s a done deal to Oregon, but looking at the big picture of everyone’s recruiting boards, I felt like Oregon is going to be the school for him at the end,” Stampini said on the 247Sports Recruiting Podcast. “Bama has two players committed at the Jack linebacker position with Kevin Harris and King Mwikuta. Then they’re also chasing Nolan Smith, chasing Khris Bogle as well as Kayvon Thibodeaux at that Jack linebacker position. It just seems like there’s a lot going on there at Alabama with that position. And I just feel like, in the end, Oregon is going to be the team to beat. They certainly impressed him on his visit back in October. He’s from California. I just kind of think sometimes they want to stay on the West Coast, and that obviously favors the Ducks. I think the relationship he has with the coaches is going to also factor in. I think Mario Cristobal and his staff have done a really good job of making him a priority and making him feel at home.”
The 247Sports Crystal Ball favors Oregon with 59 percent of the vote as we sit one month away from a planned verbal commitment. USC sits at 18 percent with Florida State at 14 percent.
Thibodeaux will be in the Swamp tomorrow for an official visit. Does Florida have a real shot at the nation’s top recruit?
“I think Florida is definitely running at least fourth in that race, don’t think they’re third don’t think they’re second,” Stampini said. “They’re going to have to knock this visit out of the park this weekend for them to jump up in the race. The interesting team that we need to look out for is, perhaps, USC. If there’s a coaching change at USC, I could potentially see a new coach impressive Kayvon enough, getting maybe a last-minute switch.”
At the same time, Alabama is always a recruiting threat and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi is the right man to lead the way with this one.
“He’s a great recruiter,” Stampini said. “He has strong ties to the West. While my prediction is to Oregon right now, I’m not by any means saying that Alabama is out of this race at all.”
Whomever lands Thibodeaux on Dec. 15 has the No. 1 247Sports Composite recruit in 2019 committed, but what exactly are they getting?
“His upside is probably as big as anyone’s,” said 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins. “He’s a long 6-foot-4, 6-foot-5, 245-pound athlete, natural pass rusher, long arms, quick first step. He’s a high-level athlete. If there’s a knock or something you want to see him do better, it’s probably his motor. There’s times in the game where it’s almost too easy for him so he’ll maybe take a few plays off. When his motor is going and he’s ready to go and he’s ready to play and he’s motivated, he’s a very talented kid. You see a lot of NFL upside, for sure, with Mr. Kayvon Thibodeaux.”
Where does Biggins, who has known Thibodeaux since middle school, see the top recruit taking his talents?
“Oregon was probably a distant fourth going into that visit,” Biggins said. “He had a great trip. Everyone knew he would. Oregon does a phenomenal job on their official trips. I think this was, hey great trip, big impression, but let’s let the post-visit buzz go away and we’ll get back to you in a couple of weeks, right? That was the thinking.l It’s been a couple of weeks iand the buzz is gone and yet you’re still left with the fact that this kid loved Oregon. I think there is a real shot now for Oregon, and I think everyone is seeing that here’s a kid who loves the staff. He loves the opportunity to play early there. He likes the opportunity from an academic standpoint. He wants to go into broadcasting. Oregon offers a great opportunity from a major standpoint. … I think we’re seeing that Kayvon now believes that no matter where he goes, Bama, Florida State, Oregon or Idaho State, he’s going to bring all of that buzz with him. … Because of all of that, I think Oregon is trending in a positive direction.”
