Early last year for a hot minute.

Iirc, it was actually back in 2016. Evan Neal had been leaning Miami this spring and some think he won't leave the state, but since his visit to UA in June, he's talking like he is very seriously considering Bama. If he wanted to commit this summer or fall, it would not surprise if Bama takes him instead of waiting around to see what Wright decides.

What is funny to me is that this isn't a debate, especially for me. I have never expressed an opinion about Cheney one way or another online or in real life. I don't know enough to have one. I justed wanted to know from the guys who watch film and understand scheme and dline play, what was he expected to do at Bama and why do they think he couldn't do a job for us. That way I would know. If someone thinks that there are just better guys on the board and we should go with them I respect that, but that doesn't say anything about his film or ability which is what I was interested in.

I'm no expert, but I think Cheney lacks the height and length for SDE (he's 6'2"ish) so he'd be considered a DT (interior DL). He appears to need pretty significant S&C and DL technique development. It's pretty likely Bama can and will land a couple more DLs who are taller, more versatile, a lot closer to being able to contribute sooner and also have better upside.

Dalvin Tomlinson had similar measurements coming out of high school.

True and his film looks great. The way he sheds blockers is great as well but camps are all about pass rushing. Like I said I'd take him and let Cochran get a hold to him.

Dalvin was every bit of 6'3" and somewhere around 280 pounds.

He was an undefeated heavyweight state champion wrestler in Georgia.

Everyone wanted him. Saw a few pages back someone said he was not highly coveted... that's not accurate. Dalvin was an elite recruit.

He tore his knee up playing soccer his Sr year, and that may have kept some from being as excited about him signing.

He also tore his knee up a second time at UA which hampered his development, but at no time was Dalvin anything other than a complete fricking monster when healthy, and he now makes a living playing on Sundays so...

Dalvin was, is, and assuming healthy will remain a nightmare for opposing OL.

I wasn't following recruiting in detail at that time, but iirc Tomlinson was very strong with wrestling skills that translated well to football -- sort of like a DL version of Clay Webb.

Tidal. Film buffs feel free to add additonal analysis positive or negative.

ETA: everyone mentioned the wrestling for Tomlinson and Webb is the wrestler in this class, per Magilla and Tidal

Can't say for Cheney, but Tomlinson had a lot of attributes going for him. He was a great amateur wrestler, a really smart dude, and even played on his school's soccer team.

I remember the latter especially because he injured his knee/leg after NSD, previously taking a spot made by Bama forcing a greyshirt on Darius Philon after HIS knee injury.

In the best/worst twist of all, Bama would have had a spot for Philon come that fall anyway...

Is a prospect or commit in this class also a wrestler. I thought I might of came across that somewhere, but I'm not sure.

Clay Webb is a pretty dominant wrestler in the state, won a title or 2 a few months back.

Would you take Cheney over any of these guys: Tuitele, Sopsher, Ika, Leal, Pickering or Stephon Wright?

No way.

That is my point which apparently has angered a few people.

Probably not...but I'm sure all of those guys expect somewhat to play early and I doubt all are willing to sit and wait. I want Pickening and In a more than anyone tho.

It does when you're directly comparing him to those players who are better on the board.

That's exactly what I've done.

He's a decent player, will need time to develop. However there are better talents on the board who have interest in Alabama.

I will have to tamp down my expectations in regards to the Dline when it comes to this one thing. With Coach Kool's track record of development at other schools, I am tricking myself into believing he can turn anyone into a monster. I'm sitting here feeling like with this much talent the Bama Dline will be laying seige to cities led by "Viking" Johnny Dwight.

For example what TH class was Sheffield in? Wasn't he in one with multiple 5 star corners? Those highly rated guys don't want to sit and wait all the time. Take a development guy and when he is a junior or senior he will be ready.
