LINK ]Two new 5-stars for Alabama in final 247Sports Rankings (BOL | embedded video)

quote:

Alabama has four 5-star recruits in the final edition of the 247Sports Rankings, which were rolled out on Tuesday.

Coming in at No. 32, making his 5-star debut by 247Sports, is LINK ]Evan Neal. The Crimson Tide offensive tackle enrollee makes the jump up to 5-star status after residing in the No. 34 slot.

The Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy product had a strong showing at the Under Armour All-America Game earlier this month, and was named the No. 3 overall performer at the event.

“He’s just so hard to get around because of of size and how well he can move,” 247Sports’ Greg Biggins wrote. “Neal worked out at both guard and tackle but we think he’s a natural tackle at the next level and could end up on either side depending on the need and where his body is at in a few years. As good as he is now, he can still lean out some and improve his overall athleticism, which would make the Alabama signee even scarier.”

At No. 30 is LINK ]Jeffery Carter who, like Neal, is also making his 5-star debut according to 247Sports. He was already within the top 32 of the rankings, however, he didn’t hold the numeric grade of a 5-star recruit yet. Also already enrolled at Alabama, Carter is everything we’ve seen Nick Saban look for in defensive back recruits.

“Long, lean, and very athletic prospect who projects as a true cornerback at the high-major level,” 247Sports’ official scouting report says of the Mansfield (Texas) Legacy product. “Wiry strong with the frame to add bulk and strength at the next level. Long-armed and gets hands on a lot of throws, despite often being avoided by opposing QB's.

"Explosive athlete who tested through the roof at The Opening Finals. Blazing speed in a combine environment combines with dynamic leaping ability. Experience playing receiver and ball skills show it. Turns and runs with terrific speed and tracks balls like a wideout. Requisite athleticism to be left on an island in man coverage. Shows awareness and breaking ability to thrive in zone.

"Confident and plays with swagger. High effort as a tackler. Will sometimes take unnecessary risks. Narrow-framed. Bigger, stronger receivers in college may be able to post him up, particularly in the red zone. Needs to add bulk and strength going to the high-major level. Senior season cut short by shoulder injury. Potential first-round draft ceiling.”

Coming in at No. 14 is 5-star running back LINK ]Trey Sanders. The Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy ball carrier is no stranger to 5-star status, holding his own in the top tier of the rankings throughout the entirety of his recruitment. This past season, Sanders rushed for 470 yards and five touchdowns as well as amassing 191 yards receiving and four touchdowns, splitting time with Penn State signee Noah Cain through IMG’s 8-game schedule.

"A sturdy running back with powerful legs and a body capable of handling pounding the position takes on every carry. One of the most college ready bodies at the running back position in the 2019 class. Able to deftly make defenders miss in the hole and turn short gains into big runs. Nimble feet, impressive jump cuts, and vision to go with the strength to break tackles and push the pile. Comfortable as a pass catcher, making him a well rounded weapon out of the backfield. Concerned he is already physically maxed out prospect with limited upside to what he is currently. An impact player at high-end Power 5 level and future NFL draft pick, with early round upside."

Last but certainly not least, LINK ]Antonio Alfano earned the No. 1 spot in the standings, making the move up from No. 8 after an impressive showing at the All-American Bowl. The 5-star defensive lineman has all sorts of potential and future first-rounder written all over him.

“Thick but lean athlete with very little body fat,” according to 247Sports’ official scouting report. “Carries 275 pounds like it's 230. Potential to be a very athletic-framed 300-pounder on the next level. Plays with good leverage with an explosive first step. Has violent hands and aggressive mentality. Has the temperament you want on the defensive line. Highly competitive. Physical tackler through the ball carrier.

"Possesses elite edge athleticism and freakish combine testing numbers. Also has versatility and strength to play inside. Sheds blocks and attacks double teams effectively. Pursuit speed is rare but effort needs to be more consistent on plays away from him. Upper tier Power 5 multi-year starter with first- or second-round potential.”

LINK ]SEC Spotlight: Five big late signing period questions (rivals.comical)

George Pickens
quote:

While the early signing period dominates the late signing period from an action and drama standpoint now, there are still plenty of questions that need to be answered heading into the late signing period, which kicks off Feb. 6. Here are five big questions to answer out of the SEC.

1. WHICH SEC PROGRAM LANDS FIVE-STAR WR GEORGE PICKENS?

Although George Pickens does very little talking about his recruitment, his name is talked about daily around the south. The five-star wide receiver out of Hoover (Ala.) is committed to Auburn, and he has been committed to the Tigers since July 2017, so why is he a hot topic? There are two big reasons — he did not sign early and he is taking visits to other programs.

Georgia had him on campus for an official visit over the weekend and the Bulldogs have become a real threat to Auburn. Tennessee is another school viewed as a contender in this race, and the Vols are expected to host Pickens one of the final two weekends. LSU has been in this too, so there is another SEC program to keep an eye on. Pickens took his official visit to LSU on Nov. 30. If there is another school to know about in this race, it is Florida. Dan Mullen and his staff have made Pickens a priority and there is chatter that the Gators could receive an official visit.

This is an SEC battle. Some feel Pickens will not end up at Auburn while some think he could stay with the school he committed to a year and a half ago, so this is a daily topic. Pickens is keeping everyone guessing, and he likely doesn’t know what he is going to do himself yet either. We are just over two weeks from Signing Day and this is an SEC battle that will go to Feb. 6 (2019 or 2021?).

2. IS DARNELL WRIGHT A DONE DEAL?

One of the highest-ranked unsigned players in the country is West Virginia offensive tackle Darnell Wright and at this point in the process he’s considered Tennessee’s to lose. West Virginia is his home-state and new head coach Neal Brown has tried to come in and change the momentum, but still stand a distant second to the Vols with not much time to make up ground. Landing Wright would be one of the biggest recruiting wins in Jeremy Pruitt’s short tenure as head coach and would be a nice way for the Vols to put a bow on the 2019 class.

In the final rankings, in the Rivals100, only seven remain uncommitted. All are considering SEC schools, and all but one is considered to be a strong lean to sign with an SEC program.

3. CAN GEORGIA FINISH STRONG ENOUGH TO OVERTAKE ALABAMA?

It’s highly unlikely but the race for the SEC conference rankings crown hasn’t been decided and with several big names still on the board for Georgia and Alabama close to finished. Pickens is obviously one big fish the Dawgs would like to reel in but Georgia is also heavily involved with four-star Kaiir Elam and Mark-Antony Richards. The trifecta would be quite the finish and depending on what happens with the Tide, put the school in shouting distance for both the conference crown and the recruiting national championship.

4. WILL SOPSHER REALLY LEAVE THE SEC?

Louisiana defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher is one most have penciled in as part of the Alabama or LSU class this cycle. Oregon is a program outside the SEC to keep on now that the Ducks have offered Rodney Sopsher, the older brother of Ishmael that is coming out of junior college. Is the package deal enough for the Ducks to steal him away from the in-state Tigers? Or will Alabama be the ones to lure him out of the Bayou? The Ducks have made it interesting over the last month but it still looks like another classic battle down to the line between the Tide and the Tigers for an elite Louisiana prospect.

5. WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE UNCOMMITTED RIVALS100 SEC BATTLES?

The buzz around Charles Moore was that he was on the verge of committing to Florida last week. He recently backed off his pledge to Mississippi State and is now expected to end up at Auburn or Florida. We do not expect him to end up in Starkville.

Henry To’oto’to is a linebacker out of California and he has programs like Oregon and Washington on his list, but Tennessee has become the team to beat. Alabama still has an official visit this weekend, but the Volololols have emerged as the favorite two weeks out.

Could Miami keep south Florida athlete Mark Antony-Richards home? Sure, but it looks like this has turned into an Auburn vs. Georgia battle late. The Bulldogs have kind of come out of nowhere in this race, Auburn may be in a better spot, but after his official visit to Athens this weekend, Georgia looks to be a contender.

The lone uncommitted prospect in the Rivals100 that may not be currently leaning towards an SEC school right now is running back Jerrion Ealy. Clemson is considered the front-runner for the talent out of Mississippi, but he visits Olé Miss (where he was a prior commit) this weekend and Mississippi Hail State is very much involved too.

The others on that screen shot are guys who have transferred or are considering transferring. So, I think this has legs. If Allen leaves I wish him well.

If Allen is leaving I have to think it's due to family or the staff feels we have some bo-hogs coming in and he won't see the field!
