Pretty sure the 15 is the total number of NC's, rather than the year.

The back to back means it would have been from 2012, which was the 15th NC. (Plus, it's got the logo from the Miami NC game against Notre Dame).

I guess sandals makes sense. For some reason, I thought the card thingy with the logo was what was on sale.

Sabes needs to cutback on his analyst hires and bring in a few witch doctors instead. Going back to the last few games of 2016, we've been absolutely ravaged with injuries. Seems like 5+ years worth in just over 1 season of play.

Well, let's get them out of our system now, I guess.

What's up with all the Jones Fractures? Never even heard of that and all of the sudden we've had like 5 in the last 6 months. They really need to look into our shoes/cleats, training, etc. Something is definitely not right with that. Tua's thumb is a freak accident, but why the heck on the first day in shorts is he throwing the ball so close to another player that he hits their helmet? Were they scrimmaging in shorts?

Sting Factor: Jaren Handy decommits from LSU

quote:

Every time a major program loses a key recruit Rivals.com takes a look at how big of a blow it is to the respective school, analyzing it from a local, regional and national level. To quantify the “sting” of each de-commitment, we assign a score from 1-10, with one being no big deal and 10 being a catastrophic hit.

THE SITUATION

Earlier this month, LSU fans were celebrating after two of the top prospects in the state of Mississippi announced their plans to commit to the Tigers. But before the calendar even changed to April, the highest-ranking of those two pledges, four-star defensive end Jaren Handy, is back on the market. In a tweet posted last week, Handy said he plans to “trust the recruiting process and be sure to not rush anything,” implying that he might have been too hasty in making his initial commitment to LSU.

Despite it being so early in the 2019 recruiting cycle, losing a highly-ranked target such as Handy so early still hurts. But how much does the loss of Taylor truly hurt the class? We ask our experts to weigh in on just how much losing him stings and also take a look at which schools might benefit going forward.

LOCAL REACTION

“When Handy committed to LSU following a Saturday junior day, there was some excitement but also some skepticism. The weekend had many immediately remembering back to early in 2017 when Adam Anderson and two others from Rome, Ga., committed. Handy is a big-time defensive end, but he's from an area of Mississippi where LSU has not had any history of recruiting. I don’t know anyone who felt that commitment would last.” – Mike Scarborough, TigerBait.com

Sting factor: 4

REGIONAL REACTION

“Handy was never all in with LSU, so this can’t sting too bad. He was on a high from his first visit to Baton Rouge and he even made it clear just hours after he committed that he was still open. LSU coaches and the fans that keep up with recruiting expected this to happen sooner than later. He could end up back with LSU, but he is going to explore his options and really slow things down. Handy is a high-end talent, so it’s tough for anyone to lose a commitment like this, but he was never set on LSU.” – Chad Simmons, Southeast Recruiting Analyst

Sting factor: 2

NATIONAL REACTION

“This is a very talented kid at a key position and really would have helped momentum in Mississippi. LSU has been criticized for the recruitment of defensive linemen in the past few years and this loss hurts in that respect.” – Mike Farrell, National Recruiting Director, Rivals.com

Sting factor: 7

WHAT'S NEXT?

Handy has said he will continue to consider the Tigers going forward but his spring and summer figures to be filled with trips to programs around the Southeast. First up on his schedule is a trip to Auburn set for this weekend and Handy has also said Alabama, Georgia and Florida are schools he would like to see soon.

Much like any prospect from the Magnolia State, Ole Miss and Mississippi State both figure to be major factors in Handy’s recruitment going forward. Expect him to take a much more deliberate approach before making another commitment.

Nation’s No. 1 kicker, down to 3 SEC schools, closing in on decision

quote:

Will Reichard likely making final decision in 2 weeks

“Is Alabama recruiting a kicker?” I got that question at least a few times per week during the 2018 recruiting cycle. Crimson Tide fans have been spoiled by watching some of the nation’s best players at every position group except one: kicker. Alabama didn’t recruit a kicker. The team did add a grad transfer, though, in former Temple kicker Austin Jones.

Not having a reliable kicker hasn’t ended the Tide’s dynasty. There was a scare last season when Andy Pappanastos missed a 36-yard field goal sending Alabama into overtime against Georgia in the National Championship Game. We know what happened after that.

Will Reichard, the nation’s No. 1 kicker from Hoover (Ala.) High School, could be the kicker who ends the negativity surrounding the position every Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“I can’t speak for all kickers, but I live for that pressure,” Reichard told SEC Country. “I want all of the pressure to be on me. I want everyone watching me. I am confident in what I can do. If I was to go to Alabama, I want to change the culture of the kickers in the past. I feel confident that I could do that if Alabama was the school I end up choosing.”

There’s a 1-in-3 chance that Alabama is the school Reichard chooses. Reichard, who is hoping to have his decision made in about two weeks, is down to the Tide, Georgia and LSU.

Unlike many players who reside in the Yellowhammer State, Reichard didn’t grow up a fan of either Alabama or Auburn. He grew up a Florida fan. The Gators aren’t recruiting a kicker in the 2019 class because they recently signed one of the nation’s best in Evan McPherson, who is one of Reichard’s close friends.

Alabama could have a few advantages over Georgia and LSU because of one of its newest coaching hires in Jeff Banks, and because of the school’s proximity to Hoover.

“I think [Banks] is the best in the business or at least one of the best, in my opinion,” Reichard said. “Alabama is also really close to home, so all of my family can come watch me play. My father actually passed away from cancer two years ago, so my mom will be the only one left in the house when I leave. I know she’ll want to come watch me play.

“They’ve made me feel special. A lot of my friends go there, so I will know quite a few people who will be there.”

Reichard has visited all three of his finalists. Georgia is one of the schools he’s strongly considering because of the success it has had at the position over the years. He’s also friends with punter Jake Camarda, who signed with the Bulldogs in the 2018 class. He thinks UGA is going to continue to compete for championships under Kirby Smart.

LSU was Reichard’s first offer. The Tigers offered him last summer when he wasn’t Hoover’s primary field-goal kicker. He split duties with Nebraska freshman kicker Barret Pickering. Reichard says he thinks LSU has made him feel the most special among his final choices. He visited Baton Rouge by himself, and when he arrived at the football facility the entire staff was waiting on him. The Tigers also sent eight or nine coaches during the recent contact period to meet with Hoover coach Josh Niblett to discuss Reichard.

Reichard, whose favorite kicker is Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens, admits that he does have a private leader at this time. He just wants to make sure that he’s 100-percent confident that it’s where he wants to attend college.

Alabama is only recruiting Reichard at the position. There’s a chance that he could be the team’s starting kicker next season. The Tide have Jones and redshirt freshman Joseph Bulovas on campus. Jones has only one year of eligibility remaining. Bulovas lost the starting kicker competition last season to Pappanastos, who made 18 of 25 field-goal attempts.

Reichard’s longest field goal came his freshman season when he drilled a 45-yarder. He didn’t play his sophomore year because of a knee injury and Pickering handled the majority of Hoover’s attempts last season. So this will be Reichard’s first season where the kicking duties are all his.

The longest kick he’s made was 73 yards in practice.

“I had a little of a break going into that day. My body was rested. It was a nice, sunny day. The kicking conditions were perfect,” Reichard explained. “There was a little wind but not too much. Everything was in my favor. But, if I were to go out on any day, I could consistently hit 58-to-61 yards off the ground.”

Alabama’s potential kicker commit in the 2019 class made his first PAT in the third grade. Reichard didn’t start focusing on kicking until the eighth grade. He played baseball, basketball, football and soccer growing up. He said he started playing football to get tougher and when his team had kicking tryouts he was naturally good at it.

When he realized that playing in college was something he could do, he decided to drop soccer and focus on football. Now he has dreams to cement his name in college football lore.

“I want to go down as one of the best to ever kick in college,” Reichard said. “Hopefully, some day, I’ll be able to play in the NFL. That’s been the dream since middle school.”

“I’d been talking to [South Carolina linebacker coach Coleman Hutzler], but we went a few weeks without talking. He hit me back [Monday] and was like, give him a call. Once I called him, he offered me a scholarship,” Henry said.

In addition to South Carolina, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker boasts offers from Alabama, Nebraska, Texas and others. He’s rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 JUCO linebacker for 2019.

Elite OLB Marcel Brooks goes in-depth on his ‘best visit’ to LSU

quote:

Marcel Brooks talks LSU visit

Best visit ever.

When Marcel Brooks fired off that tweet following LSU’s junior day event on Saturday, it caught much of the Tigers fan base’s attention.

Brooks, an elite defender ranked just outside the top-100 prospects nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings, is already down to two schools. It will be LSU or Alabama, with a decision scheduled for his birthday on June 25.

Brooks has made unofficial visits to Alabama and LSU in the past month, but the high praise of his time spent in Baton Rouge over the weekend is noteworthy. That’s because the No. 108-ranked prospect in the Class of 2019 spent much of the afternoon alongside coach Ed Orgeron.

“Man, me and Coach O have the tightest relationship I’ve ever had in recruiting,” Brooks told SEC Country. “We talked about playing early mostly. The love they gave me in Baton Rouge — it’s different than any school I’ve ever been to. People walking around, the athletes I was talking to, the coaches … there’s nothing like that. I can’t not be a part of it. It was one of the most amazing visits I’ve ever been on because of the people. It felt like home.”

While playing early was an oft-discussed topic, the two focused largely on life at LSU outside of football. Brooks said his February visit to Alabama was mainly centered around football, so the recent stop in Baton Rouge offered a different experience.

“Coach O didn’t leave my side. It’s different. It’s more than football. I don’t even know how recruits pass it up,” he said. “It was all about us off the field. The culture … the place outside of football. It’s about the culture, the coaches care about culture, and it [LSU] has so much culture. We spoke about food and our families and helping other people in Louisiana. That’s what makes the place great.”

When the conversation turned to football, it was Brooks’ fit in the Tigers defense.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound outside linebacker prospect doesn’t fit under the traditional Bench-linebacker or Field-linebacker positions. Instead, Orgeron deemed Brooks as a three-down player that could compete for playing time immediately and rarely be taken off the field.

“Usually, you have an outside linebacker that blitzes all the time. In the base package, there’s someone rushing [the quarterback] and someone who subs out who covers the flat. In my case, I can rush at a high level as much as cover at a high level,” Brooks explained. “Basically, you get two players when I get in the game. They said they want to build a defense around me. It’s a blessing, but it’s a job. I want to come in and do my role.”

During his visit, Brooks watched LSU’s first spring scrimmage. His eyes were fixated on Devin White, safety Eric Monroe and newly transitioned cornerback Mannie Netherly. All drew his attention in a positive way.

Overall, Brooks thrived off the energy that exuded from the Tigers defense, which is a key reason why he’s down to LSU and Alabama as his final two schools.

“Getting to see them live, practice and scrimmage was the most crazy thing I’ve ever seen,” he recalled. “The way they were hitting, the ways the boys were talking, playing as a team on defense. The defense was scary.”

“I chose LSU and Alabama for a reason,” he added. “I talk to Coach [Nick] Saban, Coach Orgeron, and I couldn’t settle for nothing less.”

Marcel Brooks has already picked between LSU, Alabama

Brooks doesn’t need to wait until June 25 to make up his mind.

Before visiting Alabama in February and LSU last weekend, the blue-chip defender has already made up his mind on where he wants to attend college. It was as simple as a coin flip.

“I already know where I’m going. In my head, I know where I want to go,” Brooks said. “They’re both amazing programs and you’re going to be happy with both. Alabama was ridiculous. It was a lot of football, a lot of rings. In Baton Rouge, all the love took my attention. Baton Rouge had a lot more character in addition to football.”

That coin flip will lead to a public announcement on Brooks’ 17th birthday.

When asked how close it was between the two SEC West teams, Brooks explained that it was hard to go wrong with either program. The coaches, the history and the defensive reputations are what distinguished them when he named LSU and Alabama as finalists a month ago.

“It’s always hard choosing a school. I wish I could spend two years at one school and two at another,” Brooks laughed. “I hope they’ll be happy with my decision. I just want to play in the SEC, play for a defensive team in the SEC. I picked them [LSU and Alabama] because of their histories.”

Cont'd again:

quote:

Maurice Hampton pitches LSU to Marcel Brooks

One other elite prospect in attendance Saturday was 4-star LSU cornerback commit Maurice Hampton, who shadowed Brooks for much of the afternoon. Hampton, who has been committed to the Tigers in football and baseball for almost two years, felt that Brooks looked the part of the team’s next commitment.

“He was really feeling the vibe for us,” Hampton told SEC Country in regard to Brooks’ time at LSU. “We was really into the practice, chatting up the coaches on the sideline and chatting up the guys. Honestly, if I didn’t know any better, I would have thought that he committed to LSU [on Saturday].”

In breaking down the Tigers and the Tide, Brooks indicated that the Alabama coaches made him feel needed. Hampton, playing the role of recruiter for LSU, gave him a different perspective.

“I told him to come here and that playing in Death Valley is unlike anywhere else,” Hampton recalled. “We’ve got a great class coming in for 2019. We’re going to be the team that beats Alabama and brings a natty [national championship] home. With guys like him coming in and playing, he’d be another piece that we really need to put into the puzzle. We haven’t won a championship in a while, but together, we’d finally be on top.

“He said that the Bama coaches told him that he was a necessity, a need. I told him that Bama was lying, that Bama doesn’t need you. LSU is where you need to be and to join what we got going on.”

Brooks is ranked as the nation’s No. 6 outside linebacker, but spent the majority of his time at LSU alongside first-year safeties coach Bill Busch. Hampton, a projected outside cornerback for the Tigers, believes Brooks was receptive to the pitch from both him and Busch.

“I was on Marcel the whole day, the whole time in his ears,” Hampton detailed. “He has a top 2 of us and Alabama. We chatted about him coming in and because he’s a real versatile player, LSU needs guys like that. He was real receptive and, honestly, I think he really liked it. He was real receptive.

“He spent a good amount of time with Coach Busch. He’s got a safety’s body and he could fill his frame out more, but he looks good there [at safety].”

Auburn to host defensive end who de-committed from LSU, 2 other SEC commits

quote:

Auburn to host top DE who recently de-committed from LSU

Jaren Handy‘s last few weeks have been a whirlwind.

The 4-star defensive end from New Augusta, Miss., committed to LSU on March 3. SEC Country LSU recruiting reporter Sam Spiegelman wrote in detail about that commitment after a conversation with Handy. Handy hinted that the recruiting pressure from other schools picked up shortly after that pledge to LSU.

“Everyone has come after me even harder … everybody,” Handy said at the time. “I’m committed, but my recruitment is open. It’s really early in the process. Everyone has been texting me.”

One of those major pushes: Auburn.

Handy de-committed from LSU on March 15, less than two weeks after his commitment. He wanted to keep his options open and take more recruiting visits this spring before finalizing a decision.

Handy, like with many Mississippi prospects, has a close relationship with Auburn defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson. Woodson had been working to get Handy on campus this spring. In fact, Handy originally planned to visit the Plains on March 3 before a last-minute switch to LSU. He committed on that visit.

With Handy uncommitted, Auburn isn’t waiting to re-enter the picture.

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end will make his first Auburn visit this weekend, he told SEC Country. Handy is ranked the No. 7 strongside defensive end nationally and the No. 95 overall recruit.

Handy won’t be the only Mississippi prospect on campus this weekend. As I wrote in this notebook Monday, 5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean is still listed as a maybe for the weekend as he travels to the Atlanta Opening regional. Top-50 defensive end Nathan Pickering also is considering a weekend visit.

Two Mississippi prospects, however, are confirmed: Charles Moore and Jamond Gordon.

Moore is committed to Mississippi State. He’s also a top-1oo prospect, ranked as the No. 6 strongside defensive end and No. 84 overall. Gordon is committed to Ole Miss. He’s the No. 33-ranked weakside defensive end in the nation.

The highest-rated recruit Alabama has best chance of landing in 2019 class

quote:

The top 5 players in the 247Sports composite are as follows: defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, defensive end Zach Harrison, defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher and defensive end Nolan Smith II.

Alabama needs several interior defensive linemen this season and Sopsher is the team’s top target in the 2019 class. The good news for the Crimson Tide is that Sopsher, who attends Amite (La.) High School, has been to Tuscaloosa numerous times since becoming a national recruit. He’s also a former teammate of Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith.

Sopsher didn’t have the Tide in his original top 12 that he tweeted a few months ago, but Alabama certainly would be on the list now. He knows he’s a priority to the staff, and he has a good relationship with the coaches.

It’s still early in the recruiting process for Sopsher, but my guess is his decision comes down to Alabama and LSU. It should be noted that one of his current teammates, Devonta Lee, is a major wide receiver target for the Tide. With Alabama having Smith on board, it could be a reunion for the Amite trio if Sopsher and Lee choose the Tide. If I had to give a very early prediction, I think they do.

Should LSU expect large Mississippi presence in its 2019 class?

quote:

LSU holds commitments from seven prospects in its 2019 class. As of Tuesday, three are from out-of-state, with one hailing from Mississippi.

But the status of that Mississippi pledge is unclear. Zach Edwards, a 3-star linebacker from Mississippi State’s backyard in Starkville, Miss., committed to the Tigers on March 3 along with top-100 defensive end Jaren Handy. However, Handy de-committed within two weeks of selecting LSU. Handy and Edwards are close friends, so it remains cloudy on whether Edwards sticks with the Tigers through Signing Day.

Nonetheless, Edwards still counts as an out-of-state commitment for LSU. He is joined by 4-star cornerback Maurice Hampton from Memphis, Tenn., and long-snapper Quentin Skinner from Buford, Ga.

LSU is eyeing a number of Mississippi-based prospects to add to its 2019 haul. That’s nothing new, though. Under coach Ed Orgeron, the Tigers have successfully recruited the Magnolia State for several years. After all, the team’s starting left tackle Saahdiq Charles and possible starting quarterback Myles Brennan are from Mississippi.

Last year, the Tigers nabbed three prospects from the neighboring state. That included Bastrop, La., native Travez Moore, who was at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, along with junior college lineman Damien Lewis and 3-star center Cole Smith. In 2017, Charles and Brennan counted as the two Mississippi prospects in LSU’s recruiting haul.

Expect LSU to match that same success rate again in 2019. That means two or three Mississippi-based recruits winding up in Baton Rouge. Here are some of the marquee names to track:

Nakobe Dean, 5-star LB (Horn Lake, Miss.)
Nathan Pickering, 4-star DE (Seminary, Miss.)
Jaren Handy, 4-star DE (New Augusta, Miss.)

Dannis Jackson, 4-star WR (Sumrall, Miss.)
De’Monte Russell, 4-star DE (Jackson, Miss.)
Jarrian Jones, 3-star DB (Flowood, Miss.)

Each of these six prospects — make it seven if you count the aforementioned Edwards — have been to LSU this spring. Dean and Pickering have attended games and junior day functions; Russell camped there last summer and Handy gave a commitment to the team, albeit a brief one.

It’s hard to discount the in-state SEC programs in these races, but I’d keep a close eye on Dean and Pickering. Dean is an elite linebacker that has the attention of defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, and Pickering is a priority for the Tigers staff.

When will Alabama target and No. 1 kicking prospect make decision?

quote:

Hoover's Will Reichard, one of the nation's top place-kicking prospects in the Class of 2019, could make a college decision in the near future.

Reichard holds offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma and Oregon and indicated a decision could be coming soon.

"I'm hoping to decide here in the next few weeks," he said, "but if I need more time or more schools are offering me, then I'll take it."

Reichard has made visits in the last few weeks to LSU, Georgia and Alabama, which he said are his three leaders. Oregon offered earlier this month, and he's never visited the campus.

What does Reichard think about the possibility of kicking at Alabama, which has endured its share of place-kicking woes in recent years?

"You definitely can't look past it. It's there," said Reichard, a 3-star prospect and the nation's No. 1 kicking prospect, according to the 247sports. "I think my Mom gets more upset than anybody at what people say. I try to not to look at it, but she looks at on Facebook, Twitter, whatnot.

"If I did go there," he continued, "it'd be something where I'd want to go and change the culture of the kickers they have, but just because they have a history of that, it's not like it would turn me away from there. I feel confident in what I can do."

Hoover coach Josh Niblett said Reichard will likely handle place-kicking, punting and kickoff duties for Hoover in 2018, and that versatility makes him attractive to college recruiters.

"Not many people can do all three," Niblett said.

Last year, Reichard punted 41 times for 37.9-yard average, had more than 40 touchbacks on kickoffs and had 12 punts downed inside the 20 yard line as Hoover won a second straight Class 7A state title. He made his lone field goal attempt, while splitting the kicking duties with Nebraska signee Barrett Pickering, and he picked up a key first down on a fake punt in the 7A semifinal playoff victory over Thompson.

"Most of it is me coming in to do kickoffs and field goals," Reichard said. "I can punt really well, and so if they need me to come in to punt, I can do that. It's not something I feel like is ideal, because it's so much on my leg and I'd rather focus on either kicking or punting. If somebody needs it, I can do it. If not, I can be a back-up guy that's on the ready in case something happens."

As Reichard works toward a college decision, he said his comfort level with each potential school's special teams coordinator will be important.

"I've always wanted to be able to have a chance to play in the NFL," he said, "so wherever could develop me and get me ready for that the best has a big influence. My relationship with the special teams coordinator is important, because I'll be with him every day. The head coach is important, as well, but I'm not going to be interacting with him on a daily basis.

"And, if it feels like home, I guess, because I don't want to go somewhere and not enjoy it my first year."

So the #1 ranked kicker in the country for the Class of 2019 has made ONE fricking field goal in his career?

Yeah, it appears Brooks has decided on LSU. That's a'ight by me. I'd rather Bama land Christian Harris anyway. I like Harris better as a versatile LB/DB type, plus Harris is a great offensive prospect too, as a WR/HB.
