LINK ]Alabama trending for 4-star Ohio State commit Jordan Battle (247Sports | embedded video)

quote:

Alabama is trending in the 247Sports Crystal Ball for one of Ohio State’s top-ranked commits in the 2019 class, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas four-star safety Jordan Battle.

The Crimson Tide have received a run of Crystal Ball predictions over the past two days and now lead the way with 72 percent of the predictions. The remaining 28 percent is evenly split between Ohio State and Oklahoma, who each hold 14 percent.

Battle originally committed to the Buckeyes on June 29, but the recent announcement that head coach Urban Meyer was stepping down at the end of the season has helped open the door for the Crimson Tide to make a move for the highly-touted defensive back.

The Crimson Tide have already flipped two blue chip defensive backs this week in five-star safety Daxton Hill and four-star cornerback Jeffery Carter, who were previously committed to Michigan and Texas A&M, respectively.

Battle’s primary recruiter at Alabama is running backs coach Joe Pannunzio, while defensive backs coach Karl Scott is also assisting in his recruitment. He holds 27 reported offers.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Battle is ranked as the nation’s No. 77 overall prospect and No. 6 safety in the class of 2019. He’s also the No. 10 overall player in the Sunshine State.

In 13 games as a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas, Battle tallied 27 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and three interceptions. He also had a pair of return touchdowns on special teams, including one kickoff return and one punt return.

At the Opening Finals, the 6-foot-1, 192-pounder posted a 4.61 40-yard dash, a 4.20 20-yard shuttle, a 34-inch vertical and a 40.5-inch Power Ball throw, giving him a SPARQ rating of 113.52.

Here’s the player evaluation for Battle by 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Charles Power:

“Good height and length. Has added some solid weight over the course of his career. Good all-around athlete who doubles as a basketball player. Is a key player for one of the nation’s top high school teams. Has performed well on the big stage against top competition. Reliable and versatile. Good instincts and playing speed. Effective as a blitzer and makes plays in the return game. Does a good job reading the quarterback and receivers when in deep coverage. May lack some of the ‘wow factor’ of other top safeties and can improve his striking power. Projects as a multi-year Power 5 starter with the ability to be an impact player and leader of a top defense."

With 24 commits for the 2019 recruiting cycle, Alabama currently boasts the No. 1 class in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. The Crimson Tide’s 2019 class is headlined by a pair of five-star prospects in Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington safety Daxton Hill and Colonia (N.J.) defensive end Antonio Alfano. The full class can be seen below.

Jim Harbaugh’s Reaction To 5-Star That Flipped To Alabama

LINK

The Michigan Wolverines were likely caught off-guard when five-star safety Daxton Hill flipped his commitment to Alabama. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh isn’t going to let Hill solidify his decision before putting in a little extra effort.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Harbaugh and his staff are continuing to recruit Hill.

247Sports recruiting analyst Steve Lorenz noted that the decision caught the team by surprise but that they won’t give up on bringing Hill to Michigan.

“It caught everyone by surprise. Since I’ve been doing this, I’d probably accurately say that’s the first time the Michigan staff found out about a kid decommitting when we all did. So, when we say this was unexpected, it was legitimately unexpected.

“If they’re still recruiting him, and we know they are, I don’t think they would be still recruiting him unless they thought there was an opportunity to pull this one back out again.”

Harbaugh has good reason to keep up the effort even with only a few days to go before the early signing period.

In 2017, Harbaugh successfully got five-star DT Aubrey Solomon to return to the fold after previously decommitting, beating out Alabama and others in the process.

Per 247Sports, Hill is the No. 8 prospect in the country, the No. 1 safety, and the No. 1 prospect from the state of Oklahoma. The site’s Crystal Ball Predictions has Alabama as 50-percent likely to get Hill to enroll. Michigan was given a 31-percent chance.

The Wolverines have yet to secure a commitment from a five-star prospect, while arch-rival Ohio State already has two.

LINK ]Nick Saban releases statement on D.J. Durkin's time at Alabama (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama has not hired former Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin.

Reports surfaced that Durkin has been helping Crimson Tide this past week in a consultant-like capacity, and it was unclear if he could have a long-term role on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff.

Friday evening, Saban released a statement for clarification.

"D.J. Durkin is spending a few days with our staff in Tuscaloosa from a professional development standpoint," Saban said in a statement. "He has not been hired in any capacity at The University of Alabama. He is simply observing our operation as many other coaches have done through the years."

Maryland fired Durkin following a lengthy investigation after the death of Jordan McNair, which occurred during an offseason workout and reports of a toxic culture within the football program.

LINK ]Early Signing Period schedule for Alabama targets (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Wednesday, Dec. 19 marks the beginning of the Early Signing Period in college football. Recruits across the country will have a three-day window to make it official with their schools of choice before the New Year. After Dec. 21, recruits won't have another opportunity to sign until Feb. 6.

Alabama has several targets that it is hoping to land in its class come Wednesday. The Crimson Tide is also expected to sign the majority of its commitments next week as well with the exception of a few who plan to wait it out until February.

Here, BamaOnLine takes a look at the announcement ceremony schedule for Bama targets, including how to watch in some cases.

As for the Tide commitments that plan to sign early, BamaOnLine will work to find out exact signing times as we get closer to Wednesday. Oftentimes already-committed recruits sign early in the day and fax in their Letters of Intent before holding ceremonies at their school.

Try BamaOnLine FREE for 7 days as Alabama works to sign the No. 1-ranked class in the nation.
