Alabama recruiting: News & notes from Day 1 of Under Armour All-America week
quote:
Orlando, FL — Several of Alabama’s commits, signees and top targets arrived in Orlando on Saturday for the Under Armour All-America Game, which kicks off on Jan. 4.
Here is what we [SEC Country] learned on Day 1 from the majority of the players Alabama is interested in at the game:

Nicholas Petit-Frere, one of Alabama’s top tackle targets in the 2018 class, is arguably the most polished interview in the 2018 class. You won’t get much out of him because he knows how to carefully answer questions. He said Alabama, along with every other school still recruiting him, is still in the mix, though, Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame are the favorites. We likely won’t have any idea where he’s leaning until he makes his commitment. Petit-Frere said he talks to offensive line coach Brent Key often and has talked with coach Nick Saban over the phone quite a bit.

Justin Watkins, another wide receiver target, is down to Alabama and LSU. He’ll make his commitment at the game on Jan. 4. He said he hears from Alabama almost every day, via wide receivers coach Mike Locksley. Watkins hasn’t made his decision yet. I am still trying to find out if he has a committable offer. He had one when he took his official visit at the beginning of this month, but recruiting changes daily.

Jordan Davis, who signed with Alabama during the early signing period, isn’t sure if he’ll enroll early. His mother was in a car accident and isn’t 100 percent. Davis is taking care of her, so he may decide to enroll in the summer.

Jacob Copeland, another top receiver target, will take an official visit to Tuscaloosa on Jan. 26. He’ll visit Texas A&M the weekend before and then Florida on the final weekend before signing day, which is when he’ll make his decision. I asked Copeland if Jeremy Pruitt, who was Copeland’s primary recruiter, had stayed at Alabama if he would have committed to the Tide. He said there was a good chance he would’ve ended up at Alabama if Pruitt didn’t leave. He said now the entire staff is in touch with him, including Saban. Alabama remains in good shape because Copeland does have a relationship with Saban and Locksley.

Justyn Ross, one of the Tide’s main wide receiver targets, is down to Alabama, Auburn and Clemson. He’s still giving consideration to Florida, but it seems like it’s too late for the Gators to get in the mix. Lots of people believe Clemson will be the school the state of Alabama’s No. 1 prospect chooses, but he swears that he has no idea where he’s going. I asked Ross if there was ever a time where he had a private leader and he said no. I also asked if there was a time where he felt like he was close to choosing a school or even leaning toward a school and he said no.
He still says Clemson is the school that impressed him the most when he visited. Ross said that Derrick Ansley, his primary recruiter at Alabama, has been pushing for him to sign with the Tide. Ansley visited him and his family every week during the contact period. His grandma wants him to choose a school in Alabama, while his mom likes Clemson but will be happy with any school he picks. I know Alabama has felt confident about where it stands with Ross for a few weeks now.

Tyreke Smith, a 4-star defensive end from Cleveland, will commit at the game. Alabama is one of his finalists. Smith visited Tuscaloosa for the Arkansas game. It was his only visit throughout his recruitment process. He said fans shouldn’t discount his interest in Alabama despite just visiting once. He said he’s heard from defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and Saban almost every single day. Smith actually made french toast for Saban during his in-home visit. “You don’t always have a chance to have a coach like Saban eating breakfast with you.” I don’t think he’s going to choose the Tide when he commits.

Coynis Miller, a 4-star Auburn defensive tackle commit, said he told Alabama to stop recruiting him in early November. Miller believes Dunbar didn’t believe in his ability to play as a freshman. “He said that he didn’t think I could learn the playbook [fast enough]. I just told him straight up that I know I’m not the best player, but I know I got the talent to help the team. He was just going on about how I wouldn’t be able to learn the playbook fast enough, so I took that as him not believing in me. I politely told them that it’s been a great process but you can stop recruiting me.”

Brenton Cox, a 5-star defensive end who signed with Georgia, said Alabama came really close to landing his signature. He spoke with outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi the day he signed with Georgia and the night before at 11 p.m. Lupoi was stressing to him how Alabama needed outside linebackers in this class, but Cox said he went with the Bulldogs because he felt more comfortable there.

Xavier Williams, an Alabama wide receiver signee, will take his official visit to Tuscaloosa on Jan. 19. Williams said he’s recruiting 4-star wide receivers Justyn Ross and Justin Watkins this week. Both Ross and Watkins are big-time targets for the Tide. Williams also said that Nebraska and Clemson were schools that were trying to have him hold off on signing. He also said the staff has talked him about the possibility of playing on both sides of the ball.

This is kinda interesting.

Very interesting. Wonder what's Dunbar angle.

Dunbar seems to be a liability in recruiting. Not something you want from your DL coach.

Maybe that was our way of telling him that we don't want him. Guys have said that we value Brown and Baremore more than him. One less kid year u have to keep in contact with.

That type of negative recruiting works with girls sometimes.

Sounds like the recruit was very stubborn and Dunbar was discussing what it takes to make it. Recruit doesnt sound to be that coachable. He can go be good at a program where he can just pin his ears back and charge and we will find a guy who wants to also play within the system.

Dunbar was being honest with Coynis Miller. Gaining the ability to reliably execute the entire playbook in one fall camp is challenging. Aubie may have told Miller what he wanted to hear. It appears to me Miller wasn't as high on our board as other targets; i.e., UA wasn't ready to take his commitment, but AU was.

What bowl did Slade play in?
Offense-Defense AA Bowl in New Orleans. I was surprised at the level of recruits involved. Everyone in the game was a P5 Guy.

Sounds like he heard what he wanted to hear, not that Dunbar was putting him down.
The inverse of that scenario are recruits who hear "you have the opportunity to play early" as "you will play early".
