2. SEC SUPERLATIVES

Now that the Early Signing Period is over, I’ll take a conference-by-conference look to see how things shook out. Today I look at the SEC.

Biggest Get: Emory Jones – Jones' commitment to Florida is bigger than Justin Fields going to Georgia simply because the Gators needed a quarterback so badly in this cycle and if they whiffed they were in big trouble. He could be the guy to lead the Gators' offense back to at least respectability.

Biggest Loss: Xavier Thomas – Remember when he was a South Carolina lock? Losing him to Clemson hurts the Gamecocks but also the conference as this kid is a special talent.

Biggest Surprise: Matt Corral – Had you told me at the start of the process that Corral would end up at Ole Miss I would have said you were crazy. From USC to Florida to the Rebels, this is a great surprise addition for Ole Miss.

Future Star: Zamir White – I know he’s coming off injury and running backs are hard to project and often bust out, but this is one of the best running backs I’ve scouted and Georgia does pretty well with backs lately.

Highest Ceiling: Eyabi Anoma – He has barely scratched the surface of his potential and could be a superstar in the next few years. Of all the five-stars he could be furthest from his true potential than any and that’s a good thing. Alabama will bring the best out of him.

Project To Watch: Joey Gatewood – Will he be the next Cam Newton at Auburn or will he be a tight end or big wide receiver who barely makes an impact? It could go either way for Gatewood.

Tackling Machine: Quay Walker – The Alabama commit loves to hit and is all over the field. He should continue the great linebacker tradition in Tuscaloosa. Like Otis Reese for Michigan who I wrote about Tuesday, he hasn’t signed and needs to be a priority.

Surprising Team: Mississippi State – Despite losing Dan Mullen, Mississippi State has a top 20 class nationally (No. 6 class in the SEC) and is ahead of Florida, Tennessee and others. That’s unexpected at this stage.

Must Keep: Patrick Surtain – LSU has had the lead for a long time but if Florida State or Miami slides in here it will be a loss to the conference. You can’t count out Alabama either for the conference.

Do-or-Die January: Texas A&M – The Aggies are currently 35th in the country and No. 12 in the conference, which is way out of whack with recent results. Jimbo Fisher needs a strong January and a big close to get Texas A&M in its normal range.

DE Tyler Friday – Michigan. This is a tough call because at one point it appeared a few schools backed off and he’d end up at in-state Rutgers, but the Jersey connection to Michigan is too hard to predict against.

But what if Chris Partridge ends up at Alabama as an assistant?

Rivals hatred towards our beloved Tide is sickening. Crazy that they wouldn't predict any of those remaining prospects to pick the Tide

You think rivals is bad. Go listen to Gerry Hamilton on ESPN. He talks constantly about Ohio State. They suck at recruiting but it’s still ridiculous to listen to. Does Scout.com still exist? They blew so bad a couple years back, I stopped going to their site.

John Garcia Jr was the best part of Bana Scout, now he essentially works for 247.

A guy on BOL says he's heard some rumblings that Austin Thomas has had discussions with Saban about joining the staff.

TIFWIW.

Austin Thomas' brother was a defensive GA at UTSA...under Pete Golding.

247Sports bought Scout so Garcia is pretty much a Southeast recruiting analyst and Kirk McNair is on the BOL team as a contributor. The BamaMag posters are all on BOL now.

247Sports All-Midlands Team (2017-18)

quote:

Offensive Player of the Year - QB John Stephen Jones

Jones led his team to a comeback win in what is already being called by some as the greatest game in Texas history. The Highland Park (Texas) product completed 297-of-424 passes for 4,911 and 61 touchdowns. He threw only four interceptions. He also rushed for 311 yards and 10 scores, giving him 71 total TDs on the year. He was named the Offensive MVP of the state title game, throwing for 564 yards and scoring five TDs. Arkansas and SMU have extended offers.

Defensive Player of the Year - DB Tamauzia Brown

Brown had a monster junior season for Newton (Texas) and is going to be one of the most highly recruited prospects in the Lone Star State for the Class of 2019. He secured 12 interceptions and racked up 45 tackles to help lead his team to a state title win. Brown also starred on offense, collecting over 1,400 yards and scoring 18 TDs. Brown is a 247Sports Composite four-star and has early offers from Baylor and Oklahoma State.

Junior of the Year - DB Derek Stingley

The 6-foot-0, 170-pound defensive back from Baton Rouge (La.) Dunham School collected 64 tackles and 11 interceptions to secure first team All-State honors. Stingley is rated as the No. 74 prospect in the nation per the 247Sports Composite. He has offer from schools like Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Penn State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and more.

Sophomore of the Year - RB Zachary Evans

Evans helped lead Galena Park (Texas) North Shore on deep playoff run. The four-star rushed for 1,483 yards and 282 touchdowns on 184 carries. Evans and Class of 2021 quarterback Demetrius Davis will form a duo at the program and make them a strong state title contender in 2018. Evans already has offers from Alabama, Baylor, Miami (FL), Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas, and Texas A&M.

Freshman of the Year - OT Hayden Conner

Its rare when an offensive lineman earns a superlative like this, but the Katy (Texas) Taylor standout protected his quarterback's blindside in a district that features a wealth of talented defenders. Conner already holds early scholarship offers from Miami (FL) and Nebraska. The Class of 2021 is shaping up to be special along the offensive front in the Houston-area featuring prospects like Reuben Fatheree (Richmond Foster), Donovan Jackson (Houston Christian), and Bryce Foster (Katy Taylor) who are all also collecting P5 offers.

Private School Player of the Year - QB Grant Gunnell

Gunnell had an amazing season where he completed 361-of-507 for 4,936 yards and 61 touchdowns. The Houston (Texas) St. Pius X standout also rushed for 390 yard and eight TDs, giving him 69 total scores on the year in only 12 games. He has collected some amazing career numbers with 11,356 passing yards and 142 TDs. He is the first player to win back-to-back Private School Player of the Year honors. Gunnell -- a Texas A&M commit -- is rated as the No. 1 pro-style QB nationally per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
