How I think we finish as well but could see Copeland instead of Waddle in the class. Sort of fell it may be 50/50 for NPF.

I'm pretty confident Waddle is Bama bound.

I'm not counting Brown in this class until his signed LOI comes in tomorrow.... regardless of what he says

This is the same kid who said he didn't sign with Bama because he thought you had to have a signing ceremony

What every Alabama fan needs to know for National Signing Day

quote:

Who’s signing?

Alabama currently has four commitments who didn’t sign during the early signing period. The Crimson Tide are in danger of losing three of those players as 4-star prospects Bobby Brown, Vernon Jackson and Quay Walker all took visits to other schools this past weekend. Brown and Jackson could flip to Texas A&M and Walker likely will sign with either Georgia or Tennessee.

Walker’s decision will come at 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Brown and Jackson don’t have set times just yet. The other Alabama commit, 3-star tight end Michael Parker, is expected to receive a blueshirt or greyshirt, so he isn’t expected to sign on Signing Day.

Note: Per Hank South (BOL) Bobby Brown will sign with Bama at 7:30am CT on Wednesday.

Patrick Surtain Jr., 5-star CB: 10 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU (Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Miami)

Tyson Campbell, 5-star CB: 10 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU (Alabama, Georgia, Miami)

Nicholas Petit-Frere, 5-star T: 10 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU (Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State)

Tanner McKee, 4-star QB: 11 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU (Alabama, BYU, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, Washington)

Glenn Beal, 3-star TE: 1 p.m. ET (Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M)

Olaijah Griffin, 5-star CB: 1 p.m. ET hour on ESPN2 (Alabama, Tennessee, USC)

Justyn Ross, 4-star WR:  1 p.m. ET hour on ESPN2 (Alabama, Auburn, Clemson)

Jacob Copeland, 4-star WR: 1 p.m. ET hour on ESPN2 (Alabama, Florida, Tennessee)

Malik Langham, 4-star DE: 3:30 p.m. ET (Alabama, Auburn, Florida)

Jaylen Waddle, 4-star WR: 4:30 p.m. ET (Alabama, Texas A&M)

Penei Sewell, 4-star OL:  5:15 p.m. ET (Alabama, Oregon, USC)

Jaylen Moody, 3-star LB: TBD (Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss)

Who’s trending up?

Eddie Smith

Smith took an official visit to Alabama on Jan. 26. Coming out of that trip, there was supreme confidence in the Crimson Tide landing Smith’s signature.

Going into his decision Wednesday, how would he classify Alabama’s chances of landing his signature?

“They have a great, great, great shot,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a tough decision. All I can do now is pray and talk to my family about it and trust God is going to guide me to the right school.

“Winning a national championship is every recruit’s dream. You go to Alabama and you’re going to have a great, great shot at it. Holding that crystal ball trophy is like a dream come true. I really want to win a championship when I’m in college. It’s a big goal of mine. I’m one step closer to my dream.”

Justyn Ross

Ross took his final official visit two weekends ago to Auburn. From talking with people after that trip, it seems like Auburn doesn’t feel very confident with where it stands. His decision is still likely coming down to Alabama and Clemson. Right now, I think the Tide win.

Jaylen Moody

Moody took an official visit to Alabama this past weekend. With at least one of the current Tide linebacker commitments, Vernon Jackson and Quay Walker, expected to flip, Moody should have a spot in this class.

Who's trending down?

Jacob Copeland

Copeland took an official visit to Florida this past weekend. He grew up a big-time fan of the Gators. It looked like Copeland would end up committing to Alabama when he de-committed from Florida in late November; however, the Gators hired Dan Mullen and Billy Gonzales, two coaches Copeland respects. He also has a close relationship with Florida freshman quarterback Emory Jones.

Nicholas Petit-Frere

Petit-Frere took an official visit to Alabama during the championship parade earlier this month. He has since taken visits to Florida and Ohio State. Florida pitched to him and his mother that Florida is a better academic school than Alabama. The Gators opened a new academic center for athletes, and it’s something that impressed Petit-Frere and his mother. With Petit-Frere being from Tampa, I expect him to stay closer to home and play for Florida.

Penei Sewell

Sewell has been a big Alabama target since the summer. It looked like he would ultimately choose the Crimson Tide, but Mario Cristobal ended up getting the Oregon job. Sewell has a close relationship with Cristobal, and it has seemed like he will choose a school closer to his family on the West Coast.

I read somewhere this morning that CBs for Surtain to LSU are coming in but I think people may be going with the safe bet at this time as he seems to have shut down talking to anyone.

So are we still going to pass on ITS if (*when*) we lose out on PS2? When we get Eddie Smith, we'll only have 4 DB's and we're losing 6 to the draft/graduation.

Williams may play DB as well. But yeah, I want at least one other DB other than Eddie tomorrow.

My understanding is we have already passed on ITS. He seemed very excited about his recent OV to UT but now CBs are coming in for him to USC. Looks like he will stay out west. I am not even sure we will be a hat on the table at this point.

What's hot and what's not about this recruiting class | al.com

Where Alabama's 2018 signing class is strong, what needs work

Even with the December version stealing some of the buzz, the traditional February signing day still has some juice for Alabama.

A few top targets remain on the board with eight scholarships on the table. Most of the action should come early Wednesday with most of the high-profile prospects set to announce decsions.

That said, the basic structure of this Crimson Tide class is there. It's not too early to see where things went well and where there were deficiencies. We spoke with a few recruiting experts who broke things down looking at this class entering National Signing Day.

Where Alabama did well

It's fairly clear the bulk of Alabama's big hits came in the same area. The defensive line will be well-stocked this summer.

"Especially at defensive end," said Mike Farrell, national scouting director at Rivals. "They have some very, very elite pass rushers. I think a couple of these guys will move inside. I think Stephon Wynn will be a defensive tackle and Bobby Brown, we list him as a defensive end, but he will be a defensive tackle. But the versatility along the defensive line is extremely impressive."

The bell cow there is five-star Eyabi Anoma, a defensive end from Baltimore. A freak athlete, Anoma signed with Alabama in December.

For Wednesday, the defensive line can pick up another four-star in Bobby Brown of Arlington, Texas. The former Texas A&M commit flipped to Alabama and is expected to make it official Wednesday.

The class also includes four-star early-enrollee Stephon Wynn, four-star Jordan Davis of Memphis, four-star Cameron Latu of Salt Lake City and three-star Christian Barmore of Philadelphia.

"Had he not been committed to Temple and been on the radar the whole time," said JC Shurburtt, former national scouting director of 247Sports, "he probably would have been way up there. So, the defensive line class is good."

And that bodes well given the nature of things. "It's a line of scrimmage-heavy class," Shurburtt said. "The SEC is a line-of-scrimmage league. Defensive linemen are very talented. They tend to rank very high. The offensive line is a crapshoot. You just never know who is going to be good."

Alabama is still in the hunt for a few five-star cornerbacks, but it already has a few top highly-ranked defensive backs. Jalyn Armour-Davis is the No. 13 corner followed by No. 14 Josh Jobe. Both signed in December. Shurburtt also said he thought Jobe was undervalued in the rankings given he played in Connecticut.

"A lot of these guys are listed at corner and I know there's a need at safety," Shurburtt said, "but keep in mind in today's football and the way they run defense, those parts are kind of interchangeable. It's better to sign corners and make them safeties than the other way around."

Where Alabama didn't do as well

You can't get them all. Alabama's string of seven straight No. 1 recruiting classes is in danger for a few reasons. Break it down by position, a few observations become obvious.

The depth chart would show some holes at linebacker and things aren't trending positively. No. 2 outside Quay Walker is now listed on 247Sports as a "soft commit" to Alabama after pledging last summer. Tide commit and linebacker Vernon Jackson has the same designation with new Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher swooping in here.

"They need linebackers, obviously as of right now," Shurburtt said. "You lose a Quay Walker, that's a position they need to fill. That's why they're going after some guys that are under the radar."

Three-star Jaylen Moody of Conway, S.C. would fit that description. The No. 691 recruit in 247Sports' ranking is getting strong interest from Arkansas and Ole Miss.

"Most of the time, Alabama by this point, wouldn't have been in on a guy like that but they evaluated him and he's available," Shurburtt said. "He's not signed anywhere and they're probably going to get him."

Tennessee commit JJ Peterson might also still be in play for Alabama. The four-star was considered a Tide lean until Jeremy Pruitt took over in Knoxville. But his high school coach, Rush Propst, told AL.com on Sunday he thought it was 50-50 he ends up in Tuscaloosa.

Farrell of Rivals said the class might be a little thin at offensive line. "You always want to take more along the offensive line," Farrell said, "but they have some young linemen where they feel very comfortable with those guys and they took a ton last year."

Five-star tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere will pick between Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida on Wednesday morning from his school in Tampa. So, that could help add to the depth. Alabama signed center Emil Ekiyor of Indianapolis and Tommy Brown of Santa Ana -- both four-stars -- in December.

ESPN's Tom Luginbill listed receiver as a position from which Alabama could use a signing day boost. Justyn Ross, a four-star from Phenix City, is the most likely of the group to sign with the Tide on Wednesday. A few others who could sign with the Tide include four-star Jaylen Waddle of Bellaire, Texas and four-star Jacob Copeland of Pensacola. Four-star Xavier Williams of Hollywood, Fla., signed in December.

Then there's the quarterback situation. It looks like the Tide is a longshot to land any of the remaining targets, which would leave them without a passer for the first time since the 2004 class.

James Foster of Montgomery and Brock Purdy of Gilbert, Ariz., are the remaining uncommitted quarterbacks who have visited Tuscaloosa in recent weeks. Having three young passers on the roster and rising sophomore Tua Tagovailoa taking momentum into spring didn't help matters.

"I don't think Justin Fields or Trevor Lawrence were going to Alabama because of the depth chart," Shurburtt said. "But I think when you look at it from the standpoint of what do you do if one transfers and one gets hurt? Having consistency at quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, it kind of helps you do that because you already have those relationships in place. That'll be interesting to see what they do for 2019 at that spot."
