I know we really need/want both Mathis and Soloman, but man if we can at least get 1 of the 2 it's huge for this team moving forward...

Decision Day for Alabama 4-star DL target Phidarian Mathis
quote:

. . . "It's going to be hard," Mathis said about the upcoming decision last month. "It's about me, but I've got people who want me to stay at home. I've got to think about what I'm going to do  for the next four years. It's not about them, it's about me. It's going to be hard, but I'm going to make the right choice.

"It's not the problem about the pressure, it's about me knowing where I'm going to go." . . .

Sounds like from reading what Mathis said, he is picking Bama.

Talks about doing what is best for him, but people wanting him to stay in state.

This echoes what people were saying last night about Mathis.

Edit: His quotes from that AL.com article are from last month btw. Still, hopefully from reading things last night he hasn't changed his mindset.

Phidarian Mathis makes his commitment on Tuesday

Phidarian Mathis, a 4-star defensive tackle from Neville High School (Monroe, La.), has found a great way to honor his late friend, Tyrell Cameron. Cameron, 16, a football player from nearby Franklin Parish High School in Louisiana, died in 2015 after suffering a broken neck in a football game, which caused internal bleeding.

Mathis will announce his college commitment at Cameron’s grave site on Tuesday. He’ll decide from three finalists: Alabama, LSU and TCU. The Horned Frogs aren’t considered a major contender for Mathis. His commitment should come down to Alabama and LSU.

As of Monday night, Mathis remained torn on his decision. Neither the Alabama or LSU staff knew as of Monday night what Mathis is going to do. There have been different points in his recruitment where he was on the verge of committing to either school.

Mathis has said before that he felt like the Crimson Tide were recruiting him the hardest. That was before his primary recruiter Billy Napier left for Arizona State. That move shouldn’t matter too much because Napier wasn’t going to be his positional coach in college, anyways.

What does matter is that Mathis is from the state of Louisiana, and LSU has lost three of its priority targets to Alabama in the Class of 2017 in 5-star linebacker Dylan Moses, 4-star linebacker Chris Allen and 4-star defensive end Isaiah Buggs. You better believe the Tigers are doing what they can to make sure Mathis commits to LSU. That’s why we saw LSU coach Ed Orgeron all over the town of Monrole a few days ago from meeting with the town’s mayor to seeing his grandmother at the restaurant she works at.

He’s called Alabama and LSU “home” in several interviews with SEC Country over the past few months. His mother accompanied Mathis on his official visit he took to Tuscaloosa two weeks ago, and one source close to Alabama said his mother enjoyed what she heard from the staff.

Of note, according to a People Magazine profile on Cameron, his mother, Shamikka Cameron, said her son wanted to play for either Alabama or Ohio State if he had the opportunity to play college football one day. While the Buckeyes aren’t a finalist for Mathis, the Crimson Tide are. That could be one day for Mathis to honor Cameron.

This recruitment could go either way. I’m not confident in my pick. I haven’t heard anything concrete from Alabama’s or LSU’s side to feel really good about this.

Prediction: Alabama, confidence level: 51 percent

What is going on with Jarez Parks?

At one point, 4-star JACK prospect Jarez Parks looked like a given to end up in Alabama’s class. It was always a matter of just when he’d actually announce his commitment. That slam dunk looks now looks like a half court toss while blindfolded just a day before signing day.

What changed?

Well, Alabama’s class is practically full at this point and the Crimson Tide are expecting to land several of their biggest targets on signing day. There’s just not room to take everyone.

SEC Country was told by a source close to the team that Alabama would need to miss on Mathis and 5-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon in order to take Parks. Recruiting changes very fast in the days leading up to signing day, so this could possibly change, but this is the plan as of now.

We’ll know what Mathis is going to do around 5:30 p.m ET. Solomon is set to announce his decision at 10 a.m. ET on ESPNU. Parks’ mother told SEC Country her son will announce his decision at 11 a.m. ET. That window between 10 and 11 for Parks is sure going to be interesting if Alabama doesn’t change its stance on Parks in the next 24 hours. The belief is that Parks wants to go to Alabama. It’s just a matter of if he’ll be able to.

This recruitment is going to be one of the more fascinating stories to track on Wednesday regardless of what happens because it could go in a million different directions.

More confidence in Ray, Ruggs, Smith

Just a few quick hitters on three guys I expect Alabama to land on Wednesday:

SEC Country received word that LaBryan Ray, a 5-star defensive end from James Clemens High School (Madison, Ala.), did not bring his father or grandmother to his official visit to Florida over the weekend. Why is that important? Those two are arguably the most important people in his recruiting process. Hard to imagine they would not be there if Florida was a school he was strongly considering attending. Family is very important to Ray, especially after his mother’s death when he was 6 years old. Those two have been to Tuscaloosa plenty of times.

We also received word that 4-star wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Henry Ruggs III were in Tuscaloosa this past Sunday. How huge is that to get those guys on campus, on their own dime, just days after Napier left for Arizona State? You better believe that the Alabama staff told Smith and Ruggs that everything was going to be OK moving forward. Them going to Tuscaloosa was the only way to see them face-to-face because the quiet period went into effect on Sudnday, meaning the only contact with recruits could be on a college campus. The importance of them being there on Sunday can not be stated enough.

According to a poster on Bol, he has a source close to the program that says we are getting Mathis, Ray, Ruggs, Smith, and supposedly Solomon has told Saban he's coming but he's been all over the place. Obviously Fwiw.

We "NEED" that to be the finish for the DL help

Then for the cherry add Henderson or Speed as Recruit X

I'm praying....

I say all this in jest...I'm happy with this class with either Solomon or Mathis but Bama needs 1

Dang, I feel bad for Parks. That's a bad spot to be in if it's true....

Louisiana’s top-rated defensive lineman is set to make a splash on the eve of National Signing Day.

Phidarian Mathis, a 4-star recruit from Neville (La.) High School, will announce his college intentions on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT. He is down to LSU, Alabama and TCU.

Mathis is rated as the No. 4 prospect from the state of Louisiana and the No. 7 defensive tackle in the Class of 2017.

The Under Armour All-American took three of his official visits to LSU, Alabama and TCU — in that order — and made up his mind as soon as he returned to The Boot from Fort Worth, Texas.

Here are three things to know about Mathis ahead of his announcement:

1. Championship pedigree

Whether it’s LSU, Alabama or TCU, one college program is going to land Mathis, a prospect who is used to winning a lot of football games.

Mathis has been a part of several successful playoff runs throughout his high school career. Consider this:

- In 2013, as a freshman, Mathis’ Neville (La.) squad had its shortest postseason run of his four-year career. The team lost by 3 points in that Class 4A semifinals to the eventual state champion.
- In 2014, as a sophomore, Mathis’ team was crowned state champion as the No. 2 seed. Neville edged Warren Easton (La.), 28-27.
- In 2015, as a junior, it was a repeat. Yet again, Mathis helped his team advance to the state final in New Orleans as Neville, again, topped Edna Karr (La.), 44-36.
- In 2016, as a senior, Mathis was in the Dome, but a three-peat was not in the cards. Neville came up short against Karr, but played in the state championship game for a third year in a row.

2. The stats to back it up

Last year, 5-star defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence drew a lot of the attention along the Neville (La.) High defensive line. Lawrence is now at LSU and is expected to be a part of the talented rotation up front.

Could his former high school teammate be joining him in Baton Rouge?

LSU, Alabama or TCU is going to add a tremendous defensive lineman to their roster. As a senior, Mathis racked up 44 tackles, including 39 individual stops, to go with 7.0 sacks, 6.0 quarterback hurries, 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 pass deflections.

At 6-foot-4 and 287 pounds, Mathis has the ability to play either defensive tackle in a four-man front or end in a 3-4 front. He has incredible height and wingspan, which he uses to create mismatches in the trenches.

Mathis was an Under Armour All-American in 2016.

3. A unique setting

Tyrell Cameron was killed during a high school football game last fall.

The 16-year-old high school athlete at Franklin Parish (La.) High School took a devastating hit during a Friday night game and was then transported to a nearby hospital. Around 10 p.m. that night, Cameron had passed away.

Franklin Parish is a neighboring community to Monroe, La., where Neville (La.) High is located. That’s where Mathis attends high school, but he will be announcing his commitment at Cameron’s grave site.

Usually, elite prospects such as Mathis choose gymnasiums, auditoriums or a place where TV cameras can squeeze into for their announcements. Mathis took an alternative route, one that will allow him to announce is college plans while also honoring a local friend who is remembered by the community.

I don't believe it. Bama needs DL recruits too badly to turn any capable guys away.

We were recruiting him as an OLB (I think the "Jack" position), which we have depth already. At least that's what I've read so far.
