Florida’s message to 5-star DE LaBryan Ray: ‘Be different’
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It’s rare to see a top recruit from Alabama turn down the Crimson Tide for an out-of-state school.
But one player on Florida’s roster did just that last year. Running back Lamical Perine passed on a late Alabama offer to stick with his commitment to the Gators.
Perine was one of the player hosts for 5-star defensive end LaBryan Ray (Madison, Ala.) during his official visit to UF this weekend.
“He was telling me that I can be different and be somebody from Alabama that went to Florida and did great,” Ray said of Perine’s message to him. “He pointed that out and said they’re going to be better in the future.”
The Gators received Ray’s last official visit after he had taken trips to Alabama (Jan. 20), Tennessee (Jan. 13) and Ole Miss (Dec. 9). Florida is viewed as the biggest threat to the Crimson Tide.
“Me and my family had a great time at Florida, I’m not going to lie,” Ray said. “It was good because they treated me well. The people down there are great and they’re passionate about the university.
“They helped themselves, it was a great trip. It was a lot of fun and I definitely enjoyed things. This visit was different for me and it’s going to be a tough choice.”
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound prospect will announce his decision on National Signing Day. If the Gators land Ray, it would be a recruiting upset for UF coach Jim McElwain and defensive line coach Chris Rumph.
“Coach Mac told me that I fit in there,” Ray said. “He was saying that I could be a good player for the university and that he was going to look after me there.
“Coach Rumph said there’s a chance to play early and a lot there. He said that he thinks that I can be a great player for them and that he wants me.”

Makes sense. I think we close with Smith, Ruggs, Ray, Solomon, and maybe Parks.

I feel pretty certain we'll add a DB. I have no idea who, though. A poster on TI who I respect (have a general idea of his contact tree) says to keep a close eye on Chris Henderson, even though most of the news about him is UF or Miami. So we'll see if there's anything there.

Henderson is going to Miami.

I wouldn't say that's a slam dunk. I'd say better than 50/50, but not a slam dunk.

What the heck happened during the in-home visit that basically shut down his interest in Alabama?

I think the whole "we'll win either with or without you" bit hit a brick wall this time.

I'm not usually the type to say stuff like "he doesn't sound like our type anyway" or whatever. But if Saban said that and he reacted that way, then good. That tells me that he's likely not going to be one who likes stiff competition or coming somewhere that he's going to have to work like a dog to see the field. Prevents later attrition. If that isn't true, then I take all of that back.

Doesn't Bama need more then two DT in this class? Byers isn't expected to qualify, so if Bama does land Solomon, Bama would have Solomon and Buggs.
If they miss on Solomon and Mathis goes to LSU, is it time to freak out?

I kind of went "wow" when I read your reply, because I was actually thinking about him while typing my post. I've sort of sensed that we might be "in it" for him more than many think. I was wondering if he might surprise folks like Xavier McKinney did. I suspect Saban may have visited him again when he choppered down to FL recently.

I think Saban knew by Thur or Fri on Solomon. If no Solomon, then he'd want Mathis. Kinlaw may be next in line after that. I don't think there's any need to panic.

I've not heard anything from Orr, Redfish, DrewD or BamaK about Henderson. I'm just going off of a certain TI poster that I KNOW has been somewhat plugged in over the years. His info could be a couple weeks old and out of date for all I know.
I've heard nothing new on Solomon except just reading the tea leave some from Orr's postings. I feel a little better on him than I did a few days ago just based on that. Redfish's sources aren't hearing good things about Solomon (or Mathis either), but Orr's are. And more sources seem to be more positive on him that a few days ago. I guess I'm sitting at about 55/45 Bama on Solomon today, whereas I was 60/40 Michigan a couple days ago. I wouldn't be surprised if word leaked out later today.
Orr thinks Mathis wants Bama, but that the pressure is very immense. He posted some specific tactics (O going to the mayor of his town and even took pictures at the restaurant that Mathis' grandmother likes to eat breakfast at) they used when they panicked when they found out Mathis was heading to Bama. It may be working. Losing both Solomon and Mathis would hurt a lot. I'd still be surprised if that happened.

An illustrated guide to the recruiting visit at Nick Saban's house

quote:
In an area of Tuscaloosa County packed with trees, down a long driveway lies Alabama's secret weapon. It's 8,759 square feet. It sits on almost two acres. It has a fleet of golf carts. It's Nick Saban's house.
quote:
If you're like Wills, a top recruit arriving at the home of Nick and Terry Saban, you know you've made it. But, first you have to get past security.
quote:
"[Saban] has this really, really cool Mercedes everyone was going crazy over," Wills said. "It was like a sports race car. It looked like it could go about 300 miles-per-hour, it was a charcoal grey that looked brand new. Not a convertible, just a normal sports car. He got in it for us and gassed it up and that thing sounded like a lion."
quote:
So once they make it past the muscle out front, and the muscle car parked nearby, recruits need to be entertained, right?
quote:
That's when Saban walks them into their in-home recruiting lounge. It has a big TV, Ping-Pong table and a pool table. On the walls, all around the lounge, are photos of some of the best players to ever suit up for Saban at Alabama. "If it'd had an X-Box, it would be perfect," Wills said.
quote:
But there's more. Behind the house, once past all the all-time greats and diamonds, the property has access to a lake. To get there, a trail through the woods must be navigated. For that, there are the golf carts. Recruits say they're parked en masse in his driveway. But, really, they're for racing to the lake, where the recruits can hang out, swim and ride Jet-skis.

Andrew Bone (everyone's favorite) during his Q&A was saying that he's heard that Bama will be pursuing possible Grad Transfer Defensive Lineman and Cornerbacks. Obviously if we land all our targets they may not pursue this, but it seems we may not get everyone we want so maybe this is the backup plan.

Grad transfer: the new JuCo transfer bandaid solution. ??
Mama gets what Mama wants: Solomon to Michigan.
We'd better turn up the heat on Mathis because if we lose Solomon, we're in deep shite. Byars ain't qualifying without a small miracle.

I hope Hulk Jones makes it to Bama this summer, as some have mentioned. Would definitely help at DT.

Unless I'm mistaken we can't. I thought they were in a dead period starting Sunday night. I might be wrong. I think whoever Bama gets is determined by now. Short of one of these guys changing their minds its over. I don't know that Mathis and Harris are can't miss prospects. My biggest issue if they end up at LSU is that it will be viewed by their fan base and promoted by the program as a changing of the guard.

Looks like LSU will lose on Neil Farrel to Florida State. Maybe this means Mathis is coming.
