Seems like the whole disconnect with McKinney in the first place was over Ansley. They had no connection up to that point in July.

Did work to forge that relationship...

ORLANDO, Fla. — Xavier McKinney shocked the recruiting world on Sunday when he announced his commitment to the University of Alabama over Clemson. All 22 of his predictions on his 247Sports Crystal Ball were in for Clemson, including SEC Country’s.

So what happened and how did Alabama swoop in to land his commitment? McKinney told SEC Country shortly after announcing his commitment on ESPN at the Under Armour All-America Game that his decision was made a few days ago.

“It was definitely a tough decision,” McKinney said. “Clemson was leading for a couple of times. I kept switching. It was a hard process, of course, but I ended up figuring it out a couple of days ago. It came down to the wire.”

McKinney was once committed to Alabama, but he ended up backing off his commitment in July. Just like Sunday’s commitment, that decision came out of nowhere, too. The reason why he decided to reopen his recruitment this summer was just because he felt like he needed more time.

He always considered Alabama one of his top schools, even after de-committing. After figuring out his decision this past week, McKinney felt like Alabama was the best school for him to accomplish his goal of getting to the NFL.

“I feel like they can get me where I need to be as a player and as a person also,” McKinney said. “I fell in love with the staff and the atmosphere when I’ve gone there. Those were the main reasons why I committed.”

The nation’s No. 8 safety knew everyone was expecting him to choose Clemson on Sunday, but he said, “it is what it is.”

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound prospect said earlier this week that he was no longer going to early enroll in the school of his choice, but he told SEC Country on Sunday that he will be on Alabama’s campus this month.

As for his finalists — Clemson and Ohio State — can either of them flip him from his commitment to Alabama?

“I’m done,” he said.

One of Alabama’s biggest needs in this class was getting at least a couple of elite safeties committed. The Crimson Tide now have that in 4-star prospect Daniel Wright and McKinney. McKinney said Alabama fans should expect big things from him in the future.

“They can expect a superstar,” McKinney said. “I’m coming in ready to play. I’m going to work hard and try to become the next star.”

I thought that McKinney article you posted earlier this week was very pro bama, but I thought he was trolling to drum up interest for his announcement

ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2017 Under Armour All-America Game is in the books. Sunday’s game followed a week of practice that showcased some of the top prospects in the 2017 class. Below is a compilation of winners and losers from the week that was in central Florida.

ALABAMA

A day after dispatching Washington and advancing to national title game, Alabama grabbed a commit from Rivals100 defensive back Xavier McKinney during the game broadcast. Tide commit Dylan Moses record a game-high 10 tackles (all solo) in the contest to boot. Jedrick Wills and Alex Leatherwood also spent the week standing out from their All-American peers. It’s good to be Alabama right now, and the week that was at the Under Armour game is only a small part of the reason why.

ANYONE TRYING TO STOP JEFF THOMAS

Uncommitted wide receiver Jeff Thomas caught a pair of touchdowns on Sunday. The most impressive of the pair was the second, which featured Thomas turning a short pass into a 79-yard scoring run that saw him make multiple defenders miss on his way to the end zone.

His team’s MVP, Thomas finished the game with three catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. He set the event’s record for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

OG Jamaree Salyer

Salyer’s initial punch is devastating and if a defensive lineman happens to get under it then the top-rated offensive guard has excellent footwork as well. The four-star absolutely dominates inside and he’s so massive that it’s nearly impossible to overpower him. He had a phenomenal performance. Georgia, Clemson, Alabama and others are involved.

WR Terrace Marshall

Marshall is one of the top handful of wide receivers in the 2018 class and it’s because of his outstanding length and vertical game. The high four-star can out-jump and out-reach smaller cornerbacks and makes great contested catches. LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma and TCU are some early favorites and Marshall can be a main outside target in any of those offenses.

WR Justyn Ross

Ross makes all kinds of catches – tough ones down the sidelines, ones where he needs to catch up to overthrown balls – and he does a great job grabbing the ball out front with his hands and not letting it get into his body. The four-star likes Auburn and Alabama most and he could be a guy on the outside who could go deep and make a ton of big catches.

QB Harrison Bailey

For a 2020 prospect, Bailey showed a lot of poise and had a great feel for how fast receivers were running routes and how defensive backs were breaking on the ball. He placed the ball really well, firing it when he needed to and putting some touch on passes to let receivers run under it. Florida, Alabama and Tennessee are some schools that stand out early but Bailey should be able to go wherever he wants in a few years.

WR Xavier Williams

Williams worked underneath, he worked the sidelines and then he went deep and beat defensive backs on the long ball plus he showed off excellent hands all day. The four-star reminds us of a bigger Isaiah McKenzie at Georgia – a big-time playmaker who can do lots of everything. Alabama, Clemson and the Florida schools are all involved.

CB Patrick Surtain

They don’t make defensive backs with more physical talent than Surtain. He had an early interception in one-on-ones and then broke up multiple passes. In the seven-on-seven portion he was physical with receivers in their routes and had great patience. Surtain did a great job timing his jumps as well, and with his 6-foot-2 frame he had no trouble taking on bigger wide receivers and tight ends. Clemson, Miami, Florida State and Alabama have the majority of Surtain’s attention on the recruiting trail.

DE KJ Henry

Offensive linemen had a very hard time getting a good shot on Henry because of his speed off the edge and his balance. He was able to get so low when he dipped his shoulder to get around the outside. Henry plays a lot like former South Carolina defensive end Cliff Matthews but he has a broader frame. Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, South Carolina, and a few others are in good shape with Henry.

Dylan Moses, OLB, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy — TEAM ARMOUR

The Alabama commit was around the football all day. He finished with 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass break-up.  Moses was the best linebacker from start to finish this week, and in the game, the five star played like his ranking.
