DeAngelo Gibbs’ father talks Alabama and Georgia

We’re 10 days away from finding out where the nation’s No. 3 safety is going to play college football. Will it be Alabama or Georgia, or will a surprise team win his recruitment in the end? We’ll find out at the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 1.

Before then, our Georgia reporter, Jeff Sentell, caught up with Gibbs’ father to get the latest on where things stand. Right before the dead period went into effect and before Gibbs and his Grayson High School teammates won the state championship, Nick Saban landed in a helicopter on their football field.

It made a big impression on Gibbs himself, but also his father.

“I thought it was impressive move to show that not only they wanted DeAngelo but they needed DeAngelo,” Deon Gibbs said. “Having a coach of his caliber show up at your school to reiterate how bad they need you made a very powerful statement.”

What does the family think about the opportunity at Alabama?

“If you play football, the real question is what is there not to like at Alabama?” Deon Gibbs rhetorically asked. “If that makes any sense to you. If you are a football player and you are of a certain caliber, then Alabama is going to have to be a school you are going to take a look at. The question is if it is a good fit for you.”

As Sentell notes in his story, which goes into more detail on the Georgia side of things, he feels like it’s a two-team race between the Tide and Bulldogs. I agree with his sentiments. I highly suggest reading that story in full here.

JaCoby Stevens flip talk is officially over

Alabama will not flip 5-star LSU safety commit JaCoby Stevens. There remained some hope after his commitment to the Tigers that the Tide would still find a way to get him to change his mind on attending his dream school, but that won’t be happening.

Stevens announced on Twitter on Wednesday night that he’s 1,000 percent committed to LSU, and he already has his jersey number chosen.

I said earlier this week that once LSU announced a contract extension for defensive backs coach Corey Raymond that we could probably cross off Stevens as a potential flip target. With the tweet above, I think it’s safe to cross the safety off in Sharpie from the big board.

He's definitely wayyy better on offense now. Agree with everything you say. I'm sort of speaking more in terms of team need. He plays 5 miles away from where I live, and somehow I didn't manage to make it out even one time to watch him this year.

Is that supposed to be a knock on Townsend?

Sounds like our main two priorities at DB now are flipping Henderson (who our staff apparently likes a whole lot)

Chris Henderson out of Miami?

He isn't committed to anyone.

Oh. Ok.

I was hoping you weren't implying he wasn't good enough to go watch even though he lives 5 miles away.

Yeah, I keep thinking he's a Cane commit for some reason, but since he's not committed, all the better.

Jhavonte Dean should just decommit already. Everyone knows he is going to Miami.

So who is your list of top underrated players in our class so far? Here's mine (leaving Byers in, even though he may not make it).

1.Chris Allen (think he's a national top 15-20 overall player... honestly have no earthly idea why he's rated so low... he check marks every box)

2.Byers (sure wish he could get in).

3.Kedrick James (This is more of what it's reported the coaches think about him... per Redfish and Rodney Orr, the staff thinks he'll be one of the top 5 players in the class in a few years... they just don't throw it much at his school).

4.Kyriq Mcdonald (probably will never be a star, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's one of the first freshmen on the field next year with his instincts, high football IQ, and special teams ability)

5.Shavers (See Kedrick James... most of the same things apply)

Chris Allen is a player........but think before he leaves Bama, Jarez Parks (yep, I said it) will become a force on the DLine.

Yeah, and combine that with the fact that none of the Michigan players/commits have said anything similar.

I agree. He'll likely be a terror after a couple years in the program.

I just meant among those guys already PUBLICLY committed.

Alabama isn't scaling back on contact and held a scrimmage Sunday. I asked Fitzpatrick who won. "The defense," he beamed. "We killed them."

Hey, are any of my fellow Alabama acquaintances interested in connecting professionally via LinkedIn? I talk sports here as this is the very best site to keep up on our team, but for business connections, if anyone is interested I'd like to connect.

Leatherwoods comments about sites looking for clicks is spot on. Najee is all Bama.
