TS, I've not heard anything for certain on Ruggs. But common sense tells me we'd like for him to hold off for a while.

Now, Charlot announcing his transfer this morning could play a factor into things. I am just not sure Ruggs can commit right now, but nobody seems to know that for certain, even Rodney Orr or redfish.

Agree on Charlot. I wish him a terrific career, preferably somewhere outside the SEC. Think he could have been a pretty good WR for us. We're recruiting at such an incredible level at that position right now and have 4-5 stud WRs already, though. I can't blame him.

We_R-The_Tide, you might want to add Phidarian Mathis from Monroe, La. to your DL (he's 6'4" 290, so I'd assume DT) list. Sounds like our interest in him is pretty serious. I'm not certain that he has a commitable offer, but it sounds like we do like him a lot.

Auburn people think they get Ruggs right now.

I'm not a great talent evaluator at all, but I'm not very high on Ruggs. I know that I'm pretty much alone in that opinion

Ruggs hasn't played football much, just started last year I think. He is more of a project type player.
I wonder if Bama will take 5 WR now. Were always going to take 4, maybe Collins will have a spot now and we won't have to hear how Harbaugh stole the number 1 player in the state from Saban.

I know that DrewD thinks the number is 4 at the WR position. Too many other numbers/needs at other positions. In a perfect world, Jeff Thomas would get his grades and he'd be the 4th guy. And he'd likely skyrocket into the top 20 overall prospects if he made the grade.

You're right on Ruggs. Very good athlete. Excellent basketball player. A bit raw at the moment. Jeff Thomas is a superb athlete that is anything but raw. I think (just speculating here) we'd love for both to hold off until around Signing Day. But you never know. This staff changes their evaluations constantly.

The issue is not what he has done, or will this year.......it's what the staff think he can become under their guidance. One source of mine, said of all the WR's we are looking at, Ruggs had the higher ceiling of them all.

Ah. My poor memory didn't recall it, and I was too lazy to go back and look. You're on the ball!

Interesting. The folks that redfish talks to are very high on Ruggs' potential as well. Others are hearing mixed things on what we think about him. I just assume that the staff is being a bit wishy-washy like they are with some guys this time of the year. I do like his upside.

By the way... on the Maurice Smith thing. UGa's staff was tampering, trying to get Smith to transfer there. That's the difference in the Chris Black situation and Maurice Smith. It would set a terrible precedent to allow Smith to be able to transfer after UGa's coaches were trying to get him to leave the program.

Of course every individual fan is going to believe what they want to believe. There's no point in posting this on the Rant, as it would get downvoted to heck even though it's coming from reliable people. I'm not sure what our staff can actually do about it from a PR standpoint. It would just start a pissing contest.

Or maybe we could talk Trent Thompson into transferring. Hmm. Now there's an idea. Maybe even an idea that he's even considered with Kirby trying to talk him into getting a medical redshirt (when he doesn't want one) among other things.

Jeff Thomas is who I want as well. Kid's ridiculous with the ball in his hands.

After losing Charlot yesterday we need someone who can return the ball too. Thomas could be that guy.

Agreed 110%... its sort of like a fine line when targeting recruits. There is too much elite talent on-hand for upside guys to break through, particularly on offense. You need to come in ready to play at the highest level from day 1.

Charlot is a prime example of this concern. He came in with the same opportunity as Calvin Ridley. Thomas brings a different style from most of the other guys we have on campus as well as on the commitment list.

Just my lowly opinion, but with adding JJ, I'd rather take Collins, I see him at the lowest ceiling as a Kevin Norwood/ArDarius Stewart type possession guy, at highest ceiling a Jordan Matthews type physical game changer at WR.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning. Do you think recruiting services place emphasis on grades when ranking players? Do you know that (I certainly have no idea so I'm genuinely asking and not criticizing). Why would making a grade have him skyrocket a 247 list?

Some guys are rated lower or not evaluated as strongly if they are thought to be a major qualifying risk. BJ Emmons is an example of this from the 2015 cycle. Emmons got a bump extremely late in the cycle.

They definitely take grade risk as a factor in their rankings.

Hey Cap, check this non-VIP BOL article out. Coach Rose of Bob Jones HS echoes alot of what you have been telling us over the years.

quote:

“Well I think it’s extremely important to build your fan base,” he said. “You know, Alabama and Auburn have more than just a local and regional fan base, but I think when you sign in-state kids, it builds your fan base and it builds pride in your product. I think high school coaches enjoy following the careers of people they coached or coached against. I think it creates a higher interest level among high school coaches over the whole state of Alabama. “I’ve got an interest in seeing guys I coached or guys I coached against. I don’t have as much of an interest in seeing a young man from California or Oregon or wherever.”

They haveproven ccountless times that they do, and have even said so. The irritating thing is their inconsistency with it. Some guys they penalize harshly, and some not at all. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rhyme or reason to it.
