Alabama misses on West, now what?
Alabama was dealt a big blow in its search for a quarterback in the Class of 2018 when Jack West, the Crimson Tide’s top target, told SEC Country that he had committed to Stanford. What makes that news sting even more is that West and his entire family are huge Alabama fans. But his fandom was never going to play a role in his recruitment. Here’s what he told SEC Country two months ago on that matter.
“I love Alabama. I’m not going to lie,” West said at the time. “I’m really good friends with AJ McCarron and Jacob Coker. We (my family) have a lot of contacts at Alabama. That doesn’t mean I’m just going to go to Alabama, though.”
Ultimately, the lure of obtaining a degree from Stanford and the opportunity to further his career in politics is what won over the nation’s No. 8 pro-style quarterback. West aspires to be President of the United States one day, and there are not many better academic institutions in the world than Stanford.
Herbert Hoover went to Stanford. John F. Kennedy did as well (though he dropped out). There has never been a President who graduated from an SEC school.
“Stanford — its degree is second to none,” West said. “You aren’t going to find many better schools in the world. You’d be able to make a lot of contacts at that school. A degree from there would definitely help you in politics.”
With West off the board, the quarterback picture does get a little blurry. The top targets fans should get familiar with in 2018 include: 4-stars Cameron Rising (Newbury Park, Calif.), Allan Walters (Paramus, N.J.) and Jalen Mayden (Sachse, Texas). Rising and Walters currently hold offers from Alabama while Mayden doesn’t. Mayden is definitely the most intriguing option for the Crimson Tide at this point because his brother, Jared, is a freshman cornerback for Alabama. Mayden told SEC Country a few weeks ago that the Alabama offer was one that he was waiting on.
“It would be pretty nice to play with my brother,” Mayden told SEC Country at the IMG 7-on-7 national championships. “If they offered me, I would definitely narrow my schools down to a top five. Alabama would be in the mix.”
Walters visited Alabama back in March with his family for four days and fell in love with the school.
“They blow me away every time,” Walters said at the time. “The facilities, the atmosphere, the coaches, the hospitality — it’s just an amazing place to be at as a student and as an athlete.
“I can see myself there as a college student and just as a football player.”
As for Rising, he is expected to visit Alabama this summer, so until he does take a trip to Tuscaloosa, Mayden and Walters are the two names fans should become familiar with.
Even with Alabama missing on West, it needs to be mentioned that the Crimson Tide has two 4-star quarterbacks committed in the 2017 class in Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.

Flip on the way?
Texas tight end 3-star commit Major Tennison will visit Alabama on July 21. It’s very possible Tennison ends up flipping his commitment that day.
One source close to the Alabama program told SEC Country that the recruitment of Tennison has picked up so much so that he’s now believed to be the top tight end target for the Crimson Tide.
The 6-foot-6, 245-pound prospect is expected to bring along his family on the trip.
Zech Byrd, a 3-star tight end from Millbrook, Ala., was thought to be an Alabama lock, but a source told SEC Country that his brother, who is a Gators fan, has been trying to get Zech to Florida.

Name to know
Josh Falo, the nation’s No. 5 tight end from Sacramento, Calif., will visit Alabama this weekend. Why is that important? Well, it’s an offer that Falo really wants to receive but hasn’t gotten yet, but more importantly, he’s good friends with Alabama 5-star running back commit Najee Harris.
Falo and Harris competed at The Opening this past week and when the competition ended, the pair were usually seen together. It’s well-documented that Harris’ recruitment is still a mystery, but if Alabama can get in the mix for Falo and possibly land his commitment, that would help Alabama’s chances of keeping Harris on board as well.

HOOVER, Ala. -- A pair of Alabama seniors provided some high praise for the Crimson Tide’s freshmen that were a part of the team’s top-ranked recruiting class for 2016. On Wednesday at SEC Media Days, tight end O.J. Howard and safety Eddie Jackson revealed several names of newly-enrolled freshmen that have caught his attention this offseason.
“I would say Shyheim and A-Ron, those two guys,” Jackson said, praising a couple of freshmen defensive backs Wednesday morning. “They take coaching, they come in and compete, they play fast.”
Cornerbacks Shyheim Carter and Aaron Robinson caught the senior safety’s eye during the team’s 7-on-7 drills this summer. Carter has worked at safety, Star and cornerback, Jackson said in an interview at the Wynfrey Hotel.
Jackson, as well as Howard, had positive things to say about four-star wide receiver Trevon Diggs. Jackson said the Maryland native is “really taking the weight room seriously,” and Howard was impressed by his receiving ability.
“Trevon Diggs,” Howard said when asked who has stood out on offense. “He has speed, good hands, runs good routes.”
Howard also shared that monster defensive tackle signee Raekwon Davis has stood out on the defensive side of the ball.
“His size, athleticism,” Howard said of Davis, who stands at 6-foot-7, 315 pounds. “He’s been standing out to me.”
Overall, Alabama’s 2016 freshman class has done all of the right things in its first steps on campus, per Jackson.
“A lot of the freshmen, they come in with the right mindset,” Jackson said. “Everyone takes coaching and advice. … They don’t get the big head and feel sorry for themselves.”

We've gotten 4 CBs for TE Major Tennison over the last 24 hours.
Hank South changed his CB for TE Zech Byrd from Alabama to Foggy.

Alabama commitment Alex Leatherwood has earned his fifth star by 247Sports.
While the Pensacola (Fla.) Washington product was already a 247Sports Composite five-star, the Tide commit impressed greatly at The Opening last week in Oregon.
“It means a lot to me to be named a 247 five-star,” Leatherwood told BamaOnLine. “Only 32 players in the country get this honor so it means my hard work and talents have been evaluated to be of the best of the best. I want to give thanks to the entire 247 staff and a special thanks to Barton Simmons.”
The elite offensive tackle committed to Alabama upon receiving an offer in the summer of 2015. The 6-foot-6, 327-pounder also played a big role in the nation’s top JUCO tackle, Elliot Baker, committing to UA last month.
Of his performance at The Opening, 247Sports’ Luke Stampini named Leatherwood the Alpha Dog of the Sunshine State:
“Alabama commit Alex Leatherwood proved to he was of the nation’s top offensive tackles and certainly worthy of a five-star ranking,” Stampini wrote. “The 6-foot-6, 327-pound prospect played with great power and mobility while showing off a nasty disposition as well. From start to finish, the Pensacola (Fla.) Washington star was the top overall performer from the Sunshine State at The Opening Finals.”
Leatherwood is the second Tide commitment to earn a fifth star, joining Najee Harris.
He is rated the No. 4 offensive tackle and the No. 7 overall player in the country

Very surprised they moved Walker Little up to #2

Najee got bumped to #3, they moved an OT all the way to #1 in the country

I wonder if the Auburn fans are still sticking with that "Calvin Ashley is head and shoulders above Alex Leatherwood" narrative?

They have Tua ranked #116 overall.
ETA: Just saw where Barton Simmons said they have only updated the 5-stars so far (nobody lost one in this update) and they'll have a full Top 247 released soon. So Tua hasn't been re-ranked yet.

I'd say Tua has a good shot to get 5* on a couple of the services. Also, Jeudy and Shavers should get nice boosts.

I feel like this is a very reactionary 247. I think they have to do it, but not sure if it's effective.
They moved Lecounte up 40 spots based on getting 4 interceptions in a 7 on 7 type environment. Is it better to be in position to get 4 ints than it is to have the qb not even look your way? This applies mostly to guys in the secondary, but it's important.
Also, wonder if Josh Myers 9 spot drop is due in part to his inability to play in pads during the summer (Ohio high school rules)

I don't think Tua will jump to a 5 star right now. I'm guessing between 40-65. If he has a good season, then he might make it to a 5 star in January
I just saw that you said a couple of services. You might be right about that

I agree. It is even more reactionary than usual. Sarrell and Walker Little all the way to #1 and #2 overall? That's nuts. I know that we're biased, but it would be hard not to have Najee Harris #1 overall. When you have a once-every-few years talent at a certain position, especially someone who can carry it 25+ times per game, it would be hard not to put him #1.

Who is a take at TE? Falo, Tennison or Byrd. Will Bama take 2 TE with only 3 TE on scholarship after this year?
Posted on 7/13/16 at 3:19 pm to remaster916
Hank thinks Bama only takes 1 TE

Nice to see several of the newcomers mentioned by the current players this morning as guys that have impressed them. Of the June (NOT early enrollees) enrollees, specifically, I've seen Raekwon Davis, Shy Carter, Irv Smith, Aaron Robinson, and Trevon Diggs mentioned by them as impressing them.
I've seen that four guys were mentioned by someone on staff as really sticking out (this was as of a week or two ago) early on. Those four were: both RBs (Jacobs and Emmons), Raekwon Davis, and Lashley. Jacobs was especially praised for his work ethic and leadership. He's already up around 215 (contrary to what the published weight of a couple days ago said).
I think we'll be thrilled with our 2016 class over the next few years.
