Every college football team uses its allotment of spring practice sessions in a different way, but no matter what the end goals are, they all want to see some players step up and show they can be valuable assets when the regular season comes around. And odds are, one will stand out from the crowd and put forth the kind of effort necessary to be a huge player in the fall.

Whether it be a newcomer making his impression on the coaching staff, a backup pushing for more playing time or a returning starter trying to keep his momentum going, someone made more noise than everyone else. And if an MVP could be crowned during spring ball, it would go to this player.

5. Alabama

David Cornwell, R-Fr., QB

While the ideal scenario would have been for a quarterback to separate himself from the pack right away in Alabama's five-man competition, that rarely ever happens. But the Crimson Tide did see some significant forward momentum from at least one member of the race, and if Cornwell continues that development in the fall, he could become Nick Saban's first-ever freshman quarterback to start.

Cornwell missed most of his senior year of high school with a knee injury, then wasn't able to play in last year's spring game because of another injury. This was his first chance to get significant work, and despite starting the offseason fourth out of five (based on seniority) on the depth chart, he's moved up to the de facto No. 2 spot behind senior Jake Coker entering the fall, according to Bleacher Report's Marc Torrence.

Not sure if serious. I'd assume you're joking (since he, of course, would be medically cleared anyway).

It would make no sense for him to not transfer. Him staying to sit the bench for his senior year, with him needing to improve his NFL stock, would be beyond bizarre.

I'd also assume this is a joke/sarcasm. It's always tough to tell for sure on a message board. If they aren't jokes, though, I have to question whether or not we've entered into the twilight zone. Folks, this is the 2-time Big 10 Player of the Year and an established All-American and 2-time Heisman candidate who recently recorded his best 40-time. Whether he could help us or not isn't in question.
