Word today from one of our best sources is: When Nick Saban and others call you phenomenal…WOW…Coach Saban was referring to a player (Coker) we need to step up. Also talked to the best high school quarterback coach I know of and he said when he went to a clinic there recently that he had never seen anything like it. He coached against Coker in high school and said Jimbo has turned him into an NFL prospect. Coach also said if bama OL can come together this might be Saban’s most prolific offense ever because of the wr. No sunshine pumped as you know but this was really my only concern about this team. Said it was so noticeable how talented he is that the players gravitate to him. Nothing against Blake but they see the writing on the wall. His go to guy so far has been OJ Howard. They have clicked.

Blake Barnett: Well, my high school is in Southern California and we run what is called a west coast offense. We run the spread and do a lot of zone read which leads to me running the ball quite often. I would not categorize myself a stereotypical dual threat quarterback even though that is what has been handed down to me. I’m not too in favor of it. Most dual threat quarterbacks can’t really pass the ball. They are more running type and then throw a couple of deep balls down the field. I prefer to think of myself as someone who can sit in the pocket and throw the ball down field and move the chains and if need be extend the play with my legs.

It’s awesome to be under a coach with a great offensive scheme and to be able to put players into the next level and give us the opportunity to do so.
Cary Clark: to Lance Barnett: What was your impression of Coach Kiffin?
Lance Barnett: He’s got a great track record of producing high powered offenses at USC and putting QBs in the NFL. He has a great sense of humor and I was very comfortable with him. The whole staff is absolutely amazing. Bama fans should be very proud of their staff. It is very nice as a father to come into a program and feel so comfortable right off the back.

Blake Barnett: Yesterday was when it really hit me and made my final decision. This past week I’ve thought about it a lot and talked to my family about it and we realized that for my future as a player, student and person, Alabama was the best place for me.

Drew DeArmond: Obviously Lance you had a chance to speak with Saban. Talk about your impression of Saban and the structure he’s established at Alabama.
Lance Barnett: He is truly amazing. All facets of the program share a common goal and direction and it is set by him. It is comforting knowing that he will be in charge of the program for years to come. He really focuses on developing the mental fortitude to handle the pressure of the game and its the little details that really matter to him. That is what impressed me about coach Saban.

Blake Barnett: Kiffin’s offense and Saban’s scheme made a big impact. I think the pro style offense is something that has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time. Obviously if you have the ability to sit in the pocket and throw the ball that is where quarterbacks get their claim to fame and what we pride ourselves on doing. That is what the true threat of a QB is: to sit in the pocket and throw. It’s nice to get out of the pocket every once in awhile and take off down field to get the yardage that you need to get your team in position.

Blake Barnett: They said pro style offense isn’t going to change. They think I’ll be able to do some different things in terms of getting outside of the pocket and rolling out. I didn’t hear anything about read option, but I think getting out and running some bootlegs and throw out of the pocket and still be able to throw in the pocket will be a big advantage and that was what they were looking forward to doing.
Drew DeArmond: Blake, can you talk about the QB coach you work with every day. Your high school offense is shotgun 24/7, but the QB coach does plenty with 5-step, 7-step, and snapping under center which makes your coach think you’ll have a smooth transition. Talk about what you work on with the QB coach.
Blake Barnett: The QB coach is Dennis Gile out in Arizona. I do a lot of work under center and work in shotgun to prepare myself for my senior high school season and obviously in the next level shotgun isnt always in play, so I have to prepare myself for under center. I don’t think its a problem taking 5 or 7-step drops. I have been working on it for 2 years now and that’s not an issue.
Drew DeArmond: One thing that struck me is that a lot of your high school offense is a lot of vertical pass patterns. How strong is your arm?
Blake Barnett: I can throw the ball about 75 to 80 yards on a good day, but thats about the range I have. It is unnecessary in that I’ll never have to throw the ball that far, but it will come in handy for sticking a ball across the middle inbetween linebackers.
