The plan and price for renovating Bryant-Denny Stadium has changed significantly since being announced in August.

Out is the large student terrace and large scoreboard that was to cut into the south end zone upper deck, according to documents set to be presented Thursday at a Board of Trustees obtained by AL.com. Instead, the proposal calls for replacing the four corner video scoreboards with new ones approximately 60 percent larger than the existing ones.

The cost of this stage of renovations is also going up to $92.5 million from the $75.5 million from the original request.

Work on the first stage of the stadium renovation is set to begin after the 2019 season and be completed by August 2020.

The project will be financed through a few different places including $25 million from donations to the Crimson Standard campaign launched when renovation plans were announced last August. The biggest piece of the pie will be $48.4 million in bonds.

Removing the student terrace would have an impact on the capacity of the stadium. It called for cutting out a large portion of the upper deck completed in 2010 and drop the capacity significantly from the current 101,821.

Other changes from the original plan include

-- Putting corner loge box seating at the southwest Level 6 instead of at the south end of the stadium.

-- Building concessions, restrooms, “social spaces” with televisions at the ground level where students enter on the southwest side.

-- Building two new stair towers on the west side for the suites and club levels.

The plan will be presented to the physical properties committee at Thursday’s board of trustees meeting in Tuscaloosa.

Good - that scoreboard looked tacky as frick.

Now put this behind basketball and we're good. Also don't kick me out of my frickin seats.

Until they start playing other games on these screens, they’re not that useful.

I love construction costs. Take out a MAJOR construction item and cost rise by millions.

Thank God! This will keep us above 100K and get rid of that potentially tacky looking screen and the corn hole

If they want to fill those seats in the upper deck of the south endzone, take the students out of the Southeast corner and sell those tickets to fans. People paying good money for seats aren't going to leave too early very often

I didn’t mind the new jumbotron but splitting the south endzone upper deck looked awful. Should’ve just brought the whole thing down. Still trying to figure how this increased costs.
For the record, the glass exterior is still awful and will look really outdated in 10-20 years.

This shitty planning doesn’t make me feel any better about Coleman.

I mean some people are going to leave early regardless. But a lot of people that are going to buy those seats for games against UTC or whatever are buying them because they've never been before and they can't afford to go to other games. So yeah they're more than likely going to stay

The football stadium was just fine at 92000 before they started fricking with it. Now they are wasting money, throwing good money after bad, just tinkering with it. There are other more constructive ways to spend that money. We need a new coliseum. We need a new natatorium. We DON’T need more money wasted on BDS.

We need to remove all of the bleacher seats in BDS.

Yes. If you’re gonna spend money on something take the bleacher seats out and replace them with real individual seats. It’s 2019 for Christ’s sake

Changes to BDS renovation plans

The only changes to BDS renovation plans I want to hear about is the one where they leave BDS alone and build a new basketball arena.

Great!

Meh! Guess they still won't be in their seats.

- Building two new stair towers on the west side for the suites and club levels. Meh!

This all just feels so reactionary. Very little substance to any of these changes. IMHO, if they're worried about attendance they need to get the communications stuff squared away, use that to make the experience more interactive and move all Aug/Sept non-conference games to night time tv be damned.

I don't think that will help attendance.

Maybe, mabye not. It beats the hell out of sitting in the stands at 11am or 2:30 in the blistering heat for a game that will be over in the first 15 minutes. I'd be willing to bet the attendance wouldn't drop off that much. Sleep late. Hit campus in the afternoon for some tailgating in the shade. Head over to the stadium after sundown. In any case, the renovation plans as written now are just throwing money for no good reason.
