Alabama Track and Field Shines at Two Different Meets
Competing in two different meets states apart, the Crimson Tide put up strong performance to start the weekend including a school-record from Mercy Chelangat in the 10,000-meters.
March has been a very good month for Chelangat, who won the NCAA cross country title two weeks ago. She became the first UA woman under 33 minutes in her first collegiate 10,000-meter race, going 32:31.43 to win the event at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. She shattered the pervious Alabama mark of 33:05.43 from Elspeth Turner in 1988, by more than 30 seconds.
In Starkville, Miss., the Crimson Tide racked up eight top-three finishes at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays on Friday, including gold medals for Samantha Kunza (hammer), Taylor Gorum (discus) and Natassha McDonald (400m).

Managed a 2nd false start disqualification. 100 butterfly, wasn't supposed to final, but 2 in a meet is quite the feat. He's seeded 3rd in the 100 freestyle tomorrow, so crossing my fingers. We're currently sitting at 16th overall, so top 15 is still quite achievable with our slate of events tomorrow. James Marcum is seeded 9th in 200 back, so jumping up 1 spot in prelims would be nice. Like the women, 400 free relay is our jam... and that is the last event tomorrow night.

A Pair of Top-Eight Swims Propels Alabama to 15th at the 2021 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships
Alabama freshman Matt King finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and led off the seventh-place 400 freestyle relay to help propel the Crimson Tide to a 15th-place team finish at the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., Saturday night.
Alabama used its pair of top-eight finishes on the meet's final day to score 91 points overall and jump into 15th place, marking its seventh consecutive top-15 finish. That is the second-longest streak in school history after finishing in the top 15 a total of 12 times between 1975-86 at the height of the Don Gambril era.
King jumped from eighth place in prelims of the 100 freestyle to fifth in finals, going 41.76. He then came back in the 400 freestyle relay, the last event of the meet, combining with Jonathan Berneburg, Sam DiSette and Colton Stogner to take seventh place with a time of 2:48.86.

A couple of Bama snippets from swimswam.com LINK
100 FREE – FINALS
Tying for second place were Texas teammates Drew Kibler and Daniel Krueger at 41.59, both slightly gaining from their morning swims. Another Cal Bear, freshman Bjorn Seeliger, placed fourth at 41.74, just 0.02s ahead of Alabama freshman Matt King (41.76).
400 FREE RELAY – TIMED FINALS
In the final heat, freshman Matt King led the Alabama Crimson Tide off in a 41.63 for the early lead. That now moves King up to 20th all-time in US history, just 0.01s behind Olympian Anthony Ervin. King placed 5th in the 100 free final earlier in the evening at 41.76.

Honestly... 12/13th place, would've still been 3rd in the SEC. He wasn't likely to score in the 100 butterfly, just really bizarre to have a 2nd false start.
Would also like to point out the son of former Bama assistant/associate head coach, and current Louisville coach, Arthur Albiero won the 200 butterfly and finished 2nd in the 100 fly. Given their age, Nicolas may have been born in T-town... definitely was a young kid here for 4-5 years.

This week’s Byrne notice recognizing Track and Field and Swimming and Diving teams:
quote:
Women's swimming and diving tied its all-time best finish at No. 5
Women's cross country posted it's second-highest finish ever at No. 8
Men's indoor track and field posted its fourth-consecutive top-10 finish, taking seventh
Men's swimming and diving posted its seventh-consecutive top-15 finish, taking 15th
Women's indoor track and field finished No. 16
Mercy Chelangat won our very first individual NCAA Cross Country Championship, was named the coaches association National Cross Country Athlete of the Year and is a finalist for the Honda Award. The women's swimming and diving team jumped from 34th in 2019, the last time the NCAA hosted its championship, to fifth this season. That extraordinary run capped by our first-ever NCAA relay title with Morgan Scott, Kalia Antoniou, Flora Molnar and Cora Dupre taking top honors in the meet's last event, the 400 freestyle relay.
