What Nick Saban said Monday before Southern Miss game By Mike Rodak | mrodak@al.com
quote:

Alabama coach Nick Saban met with the media Monday ahead of the Tide hosting Southern Miss on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium:

-- Saban said his team could improve on opportunities given to their offense in the red zone and that needs to be “the focus for the entire team.” Saban said his team made “mental errors” that allowed South Carolina to keep possession but they made red-zone stops.

--There were “way too many penalties” against South Carolina and his team “shot [themselves] in the foot.”

-- There are three “intangible things” he needs from all players: (1) playing to level of toughness, (2) giving effort to a standard needed, and (3) playing with discipline needed to execute. He pointed to substitution penalties on defense in particular.

-- Southern Miss is a “very explosive team” that scores a lot of points. He says this is “not a time for us for thinking we don’t have to prepare well.”

-- LaBryan Ray is probably “out for sure” for this game and Alabama is doing further testing.

-- Alabama is fortunate to have players who are explosive and have good hands.

-- Slade Bolden is a “core special teams” guy who has “really developed nicely for us.” Bolden serves as a scout-team quarterback when they play a team with a running-based quarterback.

-- Alabama needs execute better in the punting game no matter which punter.

-- With several injuries in the front seven, Saban says there is “no substitute for experience” and the challenge for coaches is “trying to teach those guys" the fundamentals, which allows them to adjust better in-game. “You really can’t coach experience into players.”

-- Patrick Surtain played “very well” in the game against South Carolina. Saban said it’s helpful that Alabama has a “couple of guys” with versatility in the secondary such as Surtain.

-- At Will linebacker, Saban says there is “no plan right now” and they will see who will play based on practice between Ale Kaho and Christian Harris.

-- In field goal kicking, Saban said there needs to be a “sniper mentality” and compares it to golf. Saban adds “Will [Reichard] is very capable” and “I’m sure he’s disappointed” in his missed field goal and extra point against South Carolina. “He’s a good hitter. If he misses a couple and strikes out, we’re just going to have to support him and stick with him

LaBryan Ray out with injury for 'undetermined' amount of time (BamaOnLine)

LaBryan Ray will miss at least one game with a foot injury. “From an injury standpoint, LaBryan Ray is probably out for sure for this game (against Southern Miss),” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in a press conference. “We’re doing some further testing to see what the situation is with his foot, but it’s undetermined right now as to how long he may be out.” (more)

2:30 CT Alabama-Ole Miss kickoff time set By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

Alabama is heading back to a midafternoon kickoff time for the fourth time in five 2019 games.

The Crimson Tide’s game with Ole Miss is set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on CBS on Sept. 28. It’ll be the second time on the network in three weeks and the fourth time playing in the 2:30 p.m. CT range.

Only this Saturday’s 11 a.m. kick with Southern Miss breaks the streak, though Alabama officials objected last week to another daytime game. Weather forecasts call for highs in the low 90s for the visit from the Golden Eagles on Saturday.

The roster for Week 5 SEC games was thin for the league’s television partners to divvy up. The next-best matchup was Mississippi State at Auburn but CBS has the Auburn-Texas A&M game on its air this Saturday.

SEC games Sept. 28
-- Northern Illinois at Vanderbilt, 11 a.m. on SEC Network
-- Texas A&M at Arkansas, 11 a.m. on ESPN
-- Ole Miss at Alabama, 2:30 p.m. on CBS
-- Towson at Florida, 3 p.m. on SEC Network
-- Mississippi State at Auburn, 6 p.m. on ESPN
-- Kentucky at South Carolina, 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network

Nick Saban: 'There's no plan right now' at Will linebacker (BamaOnLine)
quote:

What Alabama will do at Will linebacker this weekend is still undecided.

For the third game in a row, freshman Christian Harris started at the weak-side linebacker spot against South Carolina, but he did not finish the game there. Early in the second half, head coach Nick Saban replaced Harris with sophomore Ale Kaho, who played the rest of the game.

“There was a lot of confusion with the young guys, with the formations and the motions and some of the things that they were doing,” Saban said. “We tried to get (Harris) settled down by taking him out of the game and put Kaho in for a series. And then we put him back in the game, and then we decided to play Kaho a little bit because he’s a good football player and he needs to get some experience, himself.”

Harris and Kaho finished the road game with four tackles apiece, but both players struggled. Saban went with Kaho over Harris, but the former missed a tackle on Gamecocks running back Rico Dowdle that ended up being a 12-yard pickup in the third quarter. Playing with the twos in the fourth quarter, Kaho was also in coverage on Carolina’s final touchdown -- an 11-yard pass.

Overall, the entire Crimson Tide defense gave up 479 yards and 23 points in its first game of SEC play. With tougher tests coming later in the schedule, improvement is needed at all levels.

“There was a lot of adjusting to do,” Saban said. “The young players had a lot of problems adjusting to the quads and to the empty formation in the boundary, which we had worked on, but it was a lot for the linebackers. So, we had to stay pretty simple in terms of what we were doing, afraid that we would not do things correctly.”

The head coach added Monday, “Defensively, we played well at times, but we made some mental errors that allowed them to keep possession of the ball, which is not a good thing. But made some big red-area stops that kept them off the board, got a couple of turnovers. I think there’s a lot of things that we can improve on.”

Alabama’s defense took another big hit with junior defensive end LaBryan Ray set to miss an “undetermined” amount of time with a foot injury. The latest setback could have the Crimson Tide starting four true freshmen in its defensive front seven Saturday against Southern Miss.

But whether or not Harris returns to the lineup or Kaho replaces him remains to be seen. “There’s no plan right now,” Saban said Monday. “We’ll see how guys work out in practice, and if they do well, we’ll play the guy that we think that can do the best job in the game.”

Note: I think Harris and Kaho will probably both play -- for valuable experience and evaluation of their progress.

Good. No rat poison. Instead of getting the big head, our players will get the desire to prove them wrong.
