I’d actually like to see Bama move away from Nike but options are very limited in that field.

Speaking of conspiracies, seems this thread by definition has run it's course. Fall camp Report No. 20 which ends Fall Camp. Monday begins the regular season practices which lead up to the regular season games. Guess this thread should be "un" stickied and allowed to wither on the vine. Monday is a whole new day and we will start a new one....or ones.... 30

Bill Battle screwed up bigly when he extended Bama's Nike contract for so long, causing us to lose out on many $million$ compared to what other programs have been getting. Byrne needs to coerce Nike into renegotiating it by saying this will be their last contract ever with Bama if they don't. We're losing out on enough money to renovate or maybe even replace Coleman. Offer the "Nike Coleman Coliseum" name (for the duration of our contract) if they'll agree to bump our contract to where it should be. It's a win-win deal for Bama and Nike -- seems doable to me. And Byrne would become revered for it.

See if you can get that idea passed along to Byrne.

I just now changed the title of this thread to "2019 Football Season News ~ Duke game prep edition" and I'll update the ".... edition" subtitle frequently, as needed. So, we can just keep rolling with this thread, if folks are ok with that.

I do have the ear of one of the assistant AD but I’m sure the Nike thing is a sore subject anyway.

Perfect let’s keep it rolling

Good idea Surge. It keeps things fluid (with exception of game threads)

Just give him the idea so he can pass it on to Byrne as his own idea.

It's a win-win-win deal for Bama, Nike and Byrne too. He just might like the idea and give it a shot.

There’s a pic of Slade in BamaTime Magazine that he wanted. Does anyone know how I would be able to get a digital copy for him? It’s at A Day and he has my grandfather’s name on his forearm that passed away soon after. Special pic to the family.

You could contact them here and ask them directly.

My perspective differs from that of most here. By that, I mean I am older than most tho younger than a few. "Back in the day" we effectively had 3 shoe companies supplying us with shoe options. The two strongest were Hyde Shoes (Spot Bilt/Saucony) and Puma. In the Summer of 1982 Nike started making a big push to get its product placed in the U of A athletic program.

In the late 70's and early 80's QB's and LB's generally wore the Spot Bilt because of the foot stability. In the late 70's Alabama started moving toward the Saucony side of Hyde because of the Grid System they had introduced to their training products. The Grid System was better for the bigger guys providing the best foot stability and cushioning in the industry. That was the most common shoe for the OL and DL. The RB's, WR's, and Db's tended toward the Puma. Puma was faster recoil (better for speed) but less cushion. When someone had issues with sore feet, they moved them back to the Spot Bilt/Saucony. Spot Bilt was the tweener shoe.. When Nike came in the DB's and WR's moves to them first. They had good upper support but very little lower support. They provided the fastest recoil but least stability and cushion. We were allowed to choose the shoe we wanted to wear unless the trainer had a reason to choose for us. As a LB, I chose the Puma. The turf shoes from Puma are still the best pair of shoes I have ever worn, but during camp I wore Saucony to prevent shin splints and protect my ankles.

Nike is still about speed/performance in competition shoes more so than foot and joint protection. If you look closely, the team wears different types of Nike depending on the position they play. Some have more cushion and support while others are pure recoil targeted. More speed = less foot protection.

I, for one, hope you'll post more often.

Btw, I'm a little older than you.

What a great informative post. I fall into that older than most category and had 2 pairs of shoes. Games and scrmmage I wore SpotBuilt and for conditioning days and days we timed the 100, I wore Pumas. (I at least felt I was way faster in them, but had a really bad ankle and couldnt trust it to the pumas in a game or scrimmage. Coach actually bought the Spotbuilts to help with my ankle issues

great info on the shoes

while so many want throwback helmets, maybe we could put our linemen back in hightops. j/k but seriously, if it helped stabilize the foot and ankle. because, it doesnt matter how good a player is, if hes sidelined with foot issues.
