Lee was the #5 ILB in the country out of high school. High 4-star. Started 16 games at the most important position in Saban's defense as a true freshman, granted out of necessity. That's not a roster filler.

Saban basically said as much. He was out there playing when he shouldn't have been out there playing, but there was nobody better to fill the position.

He talked specifically about freshman and having to play too many of them.

So that's what Saban thinks the problem with the defense was last year obviously - youth.

quote:

-- Saban downplayed rankings and ratings in recruiting, saying he felt like Alabama got quality people and players who want to get a good education. He said sometimes there are unrealistic outside expectations for some players that make it difficult for players to focus on their development and not their outcome. There have been a lot of freshmen who have contributed but Saban said there is also a responsibility to not play freshmen who are not ready.

-- Saban says he does not know which players will develop quickly and hopes they have enough depth to avoid playing freshmen who are not ready.

Not a fan of Lee, but Harris will be a star if he can stay healthy

I'm excited that we'll now have multiple guys capable of creating havoc on opposing QB's, which in turn will cause more turnovers & many pick 6 opportunities.

Everyone craps on Shane but my biggest problem has always been the lack of progression during the season. To me and granted I coach but if a kid has ability but is not progressing it’s coaching. Doesn’t mean a coach doesn’t know a position or not understand but the hardest job for me as a coach is getting what I teach to translate onto the field when the pressure is on. That’s the hardest job in coaching.

60 lbs. of uncut mass per incoming pass rusher later (as in, by this July)...

Just kidding. I think.

I believe it is unfair to judge Shane Lee because of last season.

Let's give him another year or 2 in the system before we write him off. He was put in a bad situation, and I bet quite a few of our former stars would have struggled if pushed into the same thing.

I’m not writing him off. He has time to work on his speed and quickness.

I complimented the other freshman linebacker, who didn’t have a great season but has shown flashes of athleticism. Not to mention this was the first time Harris even played the position.

Agreed. Reuben Foster didn't start until his junior year. Not saying that Lee is comparable to Foster from a talent standpoint but Lee was put into an extremely tough spot based on sheer desperation because of lack of depth. He had no business starting last year but that was how bad the situation was from a depth standpoint.

Despite our criticism (I had plenty myself) of Lee and Golding, we all want them to be better and succeed. We want to be wrong, we want them to prove us wrong. They have our complete support this year. Just don't repeat the same results we saw last season or the criticism will return, ten fold and no excuses will prevent it.

Agreed. No excuses for the defense and special teams. The place kicking has no excuse for sucking arse year after year. That HAS to get fixed.

Fans wanted to give up on Reuben early in his career. We can be impatient at times.
