JK Scott never won the Ray Guy award.

I believe so, although RBR reported he was playing some CB early on in camp as well: 2023 Alabama Fall Football Preview: Who will step up at cornerback across from Kool Aid McKinstry?
ETA: Based on rereading transcripts from Saban interviews in August, I think RBR was wrong and Smith was in the mix to start opposite Downs before his injury.
ETA 2: Yeah, he was starting at Safety, at least in the only practice that was open to reporters in Fall camp: Alabama's other DeVonta Smith emerges as possible starter in 2023
