Oats said he hasn't heard anything on that yet.

The @SEC @Big12Conference Challenge is still on and to be played within their respective conference schedules in winter 2021. Having both leagues with similar COVID-19 protocols makes this doable. Also, Big 12 looking at trying to slide in a pair of conference games in December.

28. Alabama (NR): Nate Oats continues to put his program together like he did at Buffalo. He’s got two anchors in John Petty Jr. and Herb Jones, who will help the Tide get back to the NCAA tournament.

so is everyone just assuming no fans this year for hoops? any word on that?
The Holiday Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta is planning on having fans in a “controlled environment” so I’m guessing like 20% or something. They’ll probably do that same thing at home games if I had to guess

I suppose the rumors are true! @CollinSexton02 said he has gained 10-15 lbs of muscle during the break and he attributed that to eating better and being on a better meal plan. #Cavs

The NCAA’s Board of Governors will meet Friday and discuss, in part, initial COVID-19 guidelines for basketball, sources told CBS Sports. Most prominently, this includes a recommendation of three-times-per-week COVID-19 testing on nonconsecutive days at minimum during the season.

quote:

The testing threshold would also apply to referees. It is not expected to be voted as a Division I-wide official rule necessarily; these are recs from the COVID-19 Advisory Panel and should be released Friday. The Board of Directors already met Tuesday and approved the same recs.

quote:

This is a big point of intrigue in college basketball because many schools are wondering if they’ll be able to afford thrice-a-week testing in Nov/Dec, and if not, if bigger schools will help foot the bill. It’s anticipated that every conf will eventually mandate these guidelines

Ranking the Top 10 leagues in college basketball entering the 20-21 season

quote:

5. SEC

TEAMS RANKED IN THE ROTHSTEIN 45: 6 (Tennessee, Kentucky, LSU , Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas)

THE SKINNY: Improved depth should be the theme in next year’s SEC. While it remains to be seen how many teams from this league have the chops to eventually make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, the conference does look legitimately deeper than it was last season. In addition to the teams listed above, Alabama, Missouri, Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Mississippi State figure to be competitive with just about anyone that they’ll face in 20-21. The SEC would have likely only had four teams — Kentucky, Auburn LSU and Florida — in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Rothstein doesn't seem very knowledgeable on the SEC imo - and not just because of this blurb. I've seen him say plenty of stupid things when discussing the SEC. For example, when predicting our starting five he omitted Herb and Bruner and had Reese as a starter.

I know he's a Northeast guy and not everyone should be an expert on SEC basketball, but when you fancy yourself as one of the national talking heads of college basketball you have to do better than this.

Not having Alabama as a top 45 school in your power rankings - not a big deal, but it seems like everyone else thinks we would definitely fall somewhere in there. Many have us as a top 25ish type team. But then to say that Mississippi State figures to be competitive with just about anyone they'll play? Am I crazy? I was thinking they were going to struggle mightily this year.

My post above makes it sound like i'm upset.

Didn't mean it to sound like that, but i'm not rewriting it. Still think some of Rothstein's SEC takes are off the mark.

The Southeastern Conference has established Dec. 29 and 30 as the new start dates for its 2020-21 men's basketball conference schedule while the women's basketball start date will remain Dec. 31, 2020 as previously scheduled, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Friday.

The 2020-21 SEC men's basketball conference schedule will be comprised of 20 play dates that would accommodate an 18-game schedule with two open dates. Ten SEC schools will fill one of those open dates with the SEC/Big 12 Challenge in late January. The four teams not participating in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge will play league games that day.

The 2020-21 SEC women's basketball conference schedule remains at 18 play dates that will fit a 16-game league schedule.

Earlier this month, the NCAA Division I Council approved a Nov. 25 start date for the 2020-21 men's and women's college basketball seasons, when the SEC will begin non-conference play. Teams can begin preseason practice on Wednesday, Oct. 14 and will have a 42-day window to conduct no more than 30 practices.
