I thought it was 4 EST this whole time.

He needs to improve a lot as an inside the paint scorer if he wants to be drafted that high. He's just not big enough to be a strictly 3&D guy. He has to be able to drive to the basket and make some plays. I don't know if he's a good enough ball handler to get there, but I wish him the best in his efforts.

To me, we have either four (Quinnerly, Petty, Herb, Bruner) or five (add Shackelford) pretty much guaranteed starters.
The pool of possible alternative starters would probably be: Primo, Ellis, Tchikou, Reese (I almost left him off this list, but Oats does seem to like him).
If there are no injuries and a guy like Primo, Ellis, or Tchikou is starting, then presumably that guy is pretty good.
That's a pretty solid 9 man rotation. That doesn't even include Gary, who is a solid candidate for "guy that is much better than we thought."
And frick, I forgot Rojas.
We might be pretty good.

The thing that jumps out to me about that projected roster is we are much longer and more athletic.
We should theoretically score more points in the paint, have a huge increase in dunks (which is not nothing), and have better rim protection.
Last year we were such a fundamentally flawed team. We couldn't score in the paint, we were horrific defensively, and we fouled constantly. So every game was just us trying to game the system and outscore teams via 3 pointers. We shouldn't have to do that as much this year (in this hypothetical season that never happens).

Yeah looking at the roster it will be very interesting to see how the rotation plays out if everyone is as good as we have been led to believe. I think as fast as we play we are one of the few teams that may actually need a 10 man rotation, but that big of a rotation is such a difficult thing for a coach to manage.

If you wanted to find a problem with this projected 10 man roster:
Quinnerly
Petty
Shackelford
Ellis
Primo
Herb
Reese
Bruner
Tchikou
Rojas
It's that there's possibly too many bigs. I just think Herb is basically a 4 at this point.
On the flip side, this team can go big or small. Herb could be slid out of the 4 in certain situations. I don't think a front court of, for example, Herb-Rojas-Bruner makes sense, but you could move Herb from the 4 if you replaced him with a shooter like Reese (and yes, I know that he's only sort of a shooter). Or maybe Tchikou, depending on how well he shoots it.
You could even envision something like Herb-Petty-Shackelford-Reese-Bruner to give Quinnerly a rest. Obviously I"m just throwing out names - Primo could be involved, Ellis, etc.
Or just go with Herb-Tchikou-Bruner-Petty-Primo/Ellis and run a Syracuse zone.

Yeah the lineup possibilities are countless, which I think is the idea behind recruiting guys like Primo, Ellis, Miles, Ambrose, and Tchikou who have diverse skill sets and the athleticism to defend multiple positions. Oats wants to play a form of positionless basketball, and you need a bunch of versatile players to pull that off.

If Bruner is as good a defender as advertised and JQ is an adequate point defender then we should be DRASTICALLY better on the defensive end.

Bruner,Herb, Petty, and Ellis are all very very good defenders. It all comes down to JQs defense IMO. And hopefully Shacks is better too

My only concern is point. Who is the primary ball handler behind Q and am I correct that we are still thin at that position?
Posted on 8/3/20 at 4:14 pm to phil4bama
I think Oats plans on it being Primo and Herb

Yeah, I don’t actually think we have too many bigs, but we can definitely afford more injuries there.
My guess is when everybody is healthy we will have two of these three guys (Tchikou, Reese, Rojas) get regular minutes. It will work itself out.
