That's when I left Caledonia.

Still miss it though despite Bear's condemnation.

Still a great place to live.

Columbus has outstanding restaurants for such a small down and it's only 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa.

I think I might retire in the area just to piss off Bear.

We go "home" to Columbus every 3-4 months.

We love it.

In the 90s and 2000s the lottery scholarships were only in a very few states. Then it slowly expanded around the time Wells retired - Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina, etc. It wasn't nearly as big a difference in dollars to offer kids difference for us in 2001 as it is in 2021. Now, it's just not even the same playing field. At all. Arkansas has a program where kids from Texas can get Arkansas Lottery scholarships.

I don’t understand how the lottery scholarship issue is that big of a problem. A lottery scholarship isn’t even very valuable. UA gives better academic scholarships than almost every other SEC program.

In Tennessee, the HOPE scholarship is only like $2K per semester of like $6.5K total tuition. At UA, you can get a $3K scholarship in-state with just a 21 ACT and 3.5 high school GPA.

What am I missing here?

It's just a sleight of hand redirection of tax dollars to create the illusion that we are "helping the kids... what kind of monster wouldn't want to help the kids???" All the while, states shift current education funding to other pet projects. If not in total, at least in part. Everyone will shout me down for saying that, but that is exactly what it is

I don't think many people would disagree with that. The lottery is basically just a poor tax anyway. Those scholarships are slowly losing their value too. In Georgia for example, HOPE used to cover 100% tuition if you had a 3.0+ GPA. Now it's a sliding scale with 3.0 as the threshhold because the population has increased along with tuition, and the lottery can't keep up with it because most of that population growth has not come from the kind of people who play the lottery on a regular basis.
