Actually, no it wasn’t “illegal”. SEC by laws say that the conference commissioner can require a school wanting to hire a coach with a show cause tag from the NCAA to have the president appear and provide a valid reason that they should be allowed to hire the coach. They can’t stop the hire, but they can make it painful for any school that does it if the commissioner says “don’t do it”. Either way, it isn’t illegal.
