Maybe a lot of those 60+ grad transfers that haven't landed anywhere could do so if schools that have lost a grad transfer player didn't have to spend an IC spot to take them.

That may be the case, but most of those guys just don't look to be very good and wouldn't be worth it but maybe teams would be willing to take a flier on some of those guys with your rule.

quote:

I don't think the rule change I suggested would cause much (if any) increase in the total number of grad transfers, because the supply of players seeking transfers already exceeds the demand.

I agree with you on this, this should not influence the number of players who pursue grad transfers.

quote:

An increase in demand due to that rule will only occur when a school loses a grad transfer, and the 85 total counters limit will tend to constrain that. Some (likely most) schools who lose a grad transfer still won't elect to take a grad transer replacement.

Generally speaking, unless there's a hole created that they can't adequately cover from their current roster and/or normal recruiting, and partly due to the 85 total counters limit, schools who lose a grad transfer player will still prefer to add HS recruits instead of grads or jucos.

I also agree with this overall, but I have some skeptism on how much the 85 total counter will restrain things. A lot of teams do not manage numbers as well as we do. Clemson is at 78 right now and would have an option at 5 guys since they had 5 grad transfers which would be interesting. Although I am not concerned about it, I think this is where you have some concerns with increased tampering. You will see an increase in teams fishing around transfers than normal due to the incentive once they lose a guy. Kirby will have a field day with this if he is ever under the number.

It would likely be fine though. That market is overall pretty bad and already has more supply than demand as you stated. It isn't like it would hurt to try it.

Neither side is being petty here, at least not based on the information we have. This is where we let simple philosophical disagreements become intractable grudges. Bama wants to protect the program which makes sense. I am guessing but the kid is from Wetumpka so he likely wants to play close to home which also makes sense. There are a number of reasonable explanations why he wouldn't want to go to those other schools you mentioned and they may not need a center to begin with. No need for the hyperbole. Everyone has acted reasonable and within the current guidelines.

I understand where you are trying to go with this but it's just not true. The kid is being a classic spoiled 16-22 year old and pitching a fit because a rule he knew about doesn't fit his limited world view. If what's you're saying is true and he wants to play close to home UAB and Troy would be happy to have him. As I stated in a post right after the one you quoted "most would have a different opinion if this were Damien Harris transferring." The competitive advantage that Kennedy would provide to Ucheat or The Barn is something we should be strongly opposed to as Bama fans. I for one am glad Coach Saban is deciding to stand up for what's right.

Honestly, I just don't see how you can come to this conclusion based on the information you have. How is he spoiled? Where did he pitch a fit? I work with 18-22 year olds all the time, anecdotally, this is nothing like thier behavior. How does appealling a decision which you are allowed to do constitute a limited world view? He wasn't marching on the SEC office. And even if he was seeking change it does not make him any of those things. If a student appeals for another year of eligibility even though the rule says they exhausted it, does that make them spoiled or limited in world view? This is what I mean by hyperbole, none of this is outside the realm of decency and you are presenting this kid as if he is some amoral aristocrat.

There are obvious reasons academically, as a player and personally why he would prefer Auburn or Tennessee over UAB or Troy. Other than health sciences for UAB there isn't another circumstance I would pick those other schools. And even though we know this is about football UAB or Troy still might not have what he wants to study. Obviously he would get better coaching, exposure, and resources at Auburn or Tennessee.

I stated before, just because I wouldn't like it as a fan that Damien could choose to go to Auburn doesn't mean there should be a rule against it. Alcohol does a lot of harm but I don't support prohibition. I want Bama to win but just because something benefits us does not mean it becomes immediately right. I do agree, Saban was perfectly justified in doing what he did, but let us not pretend this is some great cause on either side.

Jalen is going to A&M not Auburn.

ETA: Also just because the change hurts us this year does not mean that it will not help us in subsequent years, Saban already said we are most likely to benefit. If you are speaking only about Kennedy we blocked him and he appealled that is the process. If you don't believe in the appeals process that isn't Brandon's fault.

Saban’s history of winning via rules he’s argued against.

This isn't to further this conversation I just thought this was a cool article and since it was related this would be a good place to post it.

It is amazing how well Saban is able to adapt.

Per a BOL mod last night, Brandon Kennedy is on campus at Pitt, but no details were given.

I have a very strong connection to Pitt, I will probably go to at least one game this year. If he goes there I will laugh my arse off especially after all this hand wringing about an in conference transfer. By the way Pittsburgh is a very underrated city. It has done a complete 180 in the last 20 years. Healthcare and Technology have completely revitalized the city. Great food, sports, theater, museums, etc. and it is beautiful and affordable. Love that place.

My 1st wife (mother of my two sons) grew up in Pittsburgh. I've only been to Pittsburgh a few times, on business way back in the late 80s. I liked it. Friendly people. Seemed like a nice city.

I hope Brandon does transfer to Pitt and I hope he does very well there!

New transfer rule eliminates permission-to-contact process (NCAA.org)

DI Council hopes change brings transparency and opens conversation between students and coaches

Michelle Brutlag Hosick

Beginning in October, Division I student-athletes will have the ability to transfer to a different school and receive a scholarship without asking their current school for permission.

The Division I Council adopted a proposal this week that creates a new “notification-of-transfer” model. This new system allows a student to inform his or her current school of a desire to transfer, then requires that school to enter the student’s name into a national transfer database within two business days. Once the student-athlete’s name is in the database, other coaches are free to contact that individual.

“The membership showed today that it supports this significant change in transfer rules,” said Justin Sell, chair of the Division I Transfer Working Group and athletics director at South Dakota State. “I’m proud of the effort the Transfer Working Group put forth to make this happen for student-athletes, coaches and schools.”

The previous transfer rule, which required student-athletes to get permission from their current school to contact another school before they can receive a scholarship after transfer, was intended to discourage coaches from recruiting student-athletes from other Division I schools. The rule change ends the controversial practice in which some coaches or administrators would prevent students from having contact with specific schools. Conferences, however, still can make rules that are more restrictive than the national rule.

Additionally, the proposal adds tampering with a current student-athlete at another school to the list of potential Level 2 violations, considered a significant breach of conduct.

Nicholas Clark, a recent graduate of and former football player at Coastal Carolina who represents the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on the Council, said the rule change promotes fairness and the well-being of college athletes.

“This creates a safe place for student-athletes to have a conversation with their coaches and makes the whole process more transparent,” Clark said. “This will clean the process up and give more influence and flexibility to the student-athlete.”

The Transfer Working Group first introduced the proposal in fall 2017, aiming to detach a student-athlete’s pursuit of transferring to a different school from the process of receiving a scholarship at the new college or university. The new rule was developed based on a series of principles the Division I Board of Directors developed for the working group, including any rule changes should support the academic success of student-athletes, be based on data and create the least restrictive environment possible for student-athletes.

Another financial aid element, autonomy legislation that governs when a school can reduce or cancel aid, may be adjusted next week by the autonomy conferences. Currently, a student’s notification of intent to transfer at the end of a term is not one of the listed reasons a school can use to cancel aid. The autonomy conferences will consider, by an electronic vote, two different proposals to allow schools to cancel the aid.

The rule change takes effect Oct. 15.

The Transfer Working Group will continue working on other transfer issues, including rules surrounding postgraduate transfers, and still is exploring the possibility of uniform transfer rules.
