LINK ]Patriots’ Brian Daboll Reportedly Expected To Interview For Alabama Coordinator Job

A couple of similar articles ( LINK1 LINK2) indicate Josh McDaniels wants to remain the Patriots' OC.

Nick Saban needs a new offensive coordinator in the wake of Steve Sarkisian’s leap to the Atlanta Falcons, and he could be looking for a familiar face to fill the vacancy.
New England Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll, who worked under Saban as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in the late 1990s, is expected to interview for the open offensive coordinator job at Alabama, a source told FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman on Monday.
Daboll has worked two separate stints with the Patriots, first from 2000 to 2006 and then from 2013 to present day. Between those, he served as the New York Jets’ quarterbacks coach (2007 to 2008) and offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns (2009 to 2010), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012).
Had current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels taken a head-coaching job elsewhere next season, many viewed Daboll as the next in line to succeed him.
Saban promoted Sarkisian to offensive coordinator after Lane Kiffin left to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic. With Sarkisian calling the shots, Alabama lost to Clemson in the national championship game, and the Falcons later hired Sarkisian to replace offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who departed to take over head-coaching duties with the San Francisco 49ers.

I completely forgot about losing Napier so we have 3 openings if you include the new 10th assistant spot
Right. Three on-field assistant spots opened (Napier, Cristobal, Sark) but Locksley was an analyst and got one of those. So, two open now, plus the pending 10th assistant, which I think is likely to be approved this spring.

Rather have him than Godsey but that's jmo. Would rather have a young college guy but I trust Saban will make the right hire

This isn't going to happen, but I thought it could be a possibility due to the extra coach being added.
1. Locksley as WR coach/Co-OC - calls offensive plays from the booth or field.
2. New Co-OC/QB coach works exclusively with qbs and assists with game planning during he week. Calls plays directly to the QB from the sideline during games.
3. New TE/Special teams coach.

I don't like the Pannunzio hire. He may bring a lot to the table but he brings a lot of baggage too and it may be more than just the Miami stuff which is bad enough. We don't need to associate with guys like that. You know the NCAA would love to dismantle the evil empire that is Alabama. Why give them free ammo?

I'm good with the Dabol hire except for the fact that he's probably one and done and we're in the same boat next spring.

Pannunzio was on our staff after the Miami stuff and nothing negative came of it. It's fine.

Hell for all we know Saban won't be on the sideline in 2018. If Daboll is the best man for the job (not that I'm saying that) then you don't think about down the road.
I'd certainly trade a national championship for another OC search.

If Saban retires, can we question the decisions of the next coach? Or will he be off limits too?
Posted on 2/13/17 at 10:13 pm to Cobrasize
Ain't nobody off limits to me.
I'll call it like I see it until the day I die.
Saban is an above average game day coach. Elite recruiter. Elite program builder. When adjustments need to be made on the fly? Meh.

Spot on assessment. Saban himself told Mal Moore he was a lousy coach without great talent. (I'm paraphrasing)

His in-game time management isn't quite Les Myles bad, but it's bad. I've cussed like a sailor watching us run out of time before the half, while sitting on timeouts

I mean it's not a bad thing to point out his one flaw.
It is what it is.
I have been extremely successful in sports, school, socially and monetarily throughout my 36 years.
I have zero problems pointing out my own flaws.
I do so much better in an environment where I'm the only person to get the job done. If the load is shared I get lazy.
I also know I suck arse at golf. I can't hit a driver for shite. Do I go out and play 18 every weekend? Well hell no. I suck and I hate losing.

Daboll's Offenses
2009: 32nd in Passing, 8th in Rushing
2010: 29th in Passing, 20th in Rushing
2011: 23rd in Passing, 11th in Rushing
2012: 32nd in Passing, 5th in Rushing
Kinda noticing a trend there
To be fair, his QBs were:
2009: Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson
2010: Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, and Senaca Wallace
2011: Matt Moore and Chad Henne
2012: Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn
If he's the hire, I hope more than ever they hire a QB Coach...

Look on the bright side, Mike Locksley had a top 40 offense 9 years ago
