Alabama Practice Report: Tide Heads Indoors
quote:
Two days after the final scrimmage of fall camp, Alabama returned to the field Monday. Even though it was sunny outside, the Crimson Tide staged its latest practice inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility. Alabama's players were in shells and shorts.
Here are some observations from the limited period of access provided to the media:
-- Najee Harris wasn't spotted. The sophomore running back has been sidelined for more than a week with a foot injury.
-- Shyheim Carter was grouped with the safeties during an individual period.
-- The first-team offensive line remained static. Jedrick Wills was at right tackle, Alex Leatherwood at right guard, Ross Pierschbacher at center, Lester Cotton at left guard and Jonah Williams at left tackle. At one point, Kendall Randolph joined the starters at right tackle.
-- In wake of Chris Allen's injury, there didn't appear to be any movement within the linebacker corps. The primary edge defenders continue to be Christian Miller, Anfernee Jennings and Jamey Mosley.
-- ESPN's Joey Galloway was seen during practice.
-- Toward the end of the viewing session, quarterbacks Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa practiced an option pitch.

Carter was expected to be a star 2 seasons ago but he got a block on contact...seems to have overcome I hope

I disagree. If Tua is the starter, Hurts is just one injury away from becoming the guy. You need him as ready as he can be for the season ahead. Also...with the new rule allowing players to redshirt after four games, why not allow him to play in those games to see if he hasn't improved?
If after four games Tua is the better player, name him the starter and think about redshirting Jalen so he can have two full years of eligibility left if he decides to transfer.

Because if he plays in 4 games and THEN Tua tweaks an ankle or something worse , his redshirt is blown. That is not doing him any favors if he is not the starter IMO

Since Hurts graduates in December and can then transfer, enroll and participate in spring practice anywhere, he may not be that concerned about redshirting to preserve a 2nd year of eligibility. Reportedly, he's made some progress since spring. In order to continue progressing, it might actually be in his best interest to play as much as possible as the #2 QB this season.

If it is a given that he is transferring( which seems likely with all that has happened) Tua DEFINITELY needs to be the starting qb. And I am still not sold that he will be.
