Just sounds like Avery knew he wasn't ready, Probably told him so but you have to find out things on your own.

Saw Adam Silver say the one and done rule isn't working for anyone. My guess is the NBA will push for a football type role soon

Thought this was interesting from the Avery interview

quote:

We're not going to mess around this year with not having a rotation earlier in the season. We're not going to wait. We've got to have that eight-, nine-man rotation early. I'm not playing 11 or 12 guys.

That means at least 3 guys are going to be out of the rotation. I'm going to guess Galin, Armond, and Reese. What do y'all think?

Yeah I agree on those 3 being left out. Reese could end up surprising us but I don't think he's ready yet.

The problem with leaving those three out is that we'd only have two bigs in the rotation. Herb might be more likely to struggle for minutes than Reese even though I think he's better.

I don't think Herb will be left out. If he's good, he won't sit on the bench. Even Sexton said he felt like Herb is the X-factor for this year's team.

I disagree. Reese has to give us some kind minutes. If its just to give the big guys a short break or to foul guys. We can't just rely on two centers, Key, and Norris to be our down low presence.

Man I don't want this kid I'd rather have M. Jones based strictly off of film.

I wonder if there are bigger issues around him kinda like Detrick Mostella where teams continually backed off even though he had the talent.

Not to start WWIII but if him coming back was a fiasco, what would it have been if he didn't withdraw or if he had transferred elsewhere?
IMO, the entire deal of him leaving school and his team in a lurch to pursue the NBA when everybody knows he isn't close to being ready for the pros is the fiasco....hell, he wasn't even invited to the try outs.
To set the record straight, I don't dislike Key and I certainly hope he has a great career at Alabama. I just don't like his occasional sloppiness and laziness on the court. If he can get past that, I'll be a 100% Braxton Key fan!

When Avery says 8 or 9-man rotation, I don't think he means that that will be all that he plays. If foul trouble becomes a problem for those 4, I think he'd be fine to put in Reese or Smith (if those 2 weren't in the regular rotation).

Honestly, I don't know which 3 players he chooses to sit. That speaks to our depth. It will probably be 3 of AJjr, Davis, Jones, Reese and Smith.

If it were me as coach, right now I'd probably choose Davis, Smith and AJjr. Davis getting some minutes if we're in desperate need of some scoring. Smith getting some PT if Giddens and Hall get into foul trouble. AJjr getting PT if Ingram and Sexton get into foul trouble. That's not a knock on AJjr, but we already have 2 PGs capable of handling the offense and Key who is capable of handling it in spurts. I don't know if coach Avery will be willing to bench his son though, especially when he is capable of playing at this level.

I wouldn't put much weight into the opinion of a kid who hasn't played a minute of D1 basketball and has no experience scouting/projecting talent

Sexton is excited and probably making friends with the other recruits. We see it in FB all the time, talking up their fellow recruits as GOAT and instant game changers

If Sexton was the only one who had said that, I wouldn't have mentioned it. I can't remember who else has said Herb could be the X-factor but I know for sure someone else did (could've been Doss or Sexton's coach Washington)

It's also been rumored that the staff thought Jones has just as much potential as Sexton and Petty.

Don't you guys think Lawson will be one of the guys that aren't in the regular rotation?

Yeah, that I thought he fricked around too long with that last year. It's great to have depth and all, but, at times, it felt like he was substituting for the sake of substituting. Put the best 5 out there and go until you need to change.

My way too early guess on PT and rotations

Starters
PG - Sexton
SG - Ingram
SF - Key
PF - Norris
C - Hall

Rotation Bench Players
G - AJ Jr
G/F - Petty
F - Jones or Reese
C - Giddens

Secondary Bench Players
F - Jones or Reese
C - Smith

- Sexton, AJ Jr and Ingram all rotate with PG duties with Sexton and AJ Jr getting the majority of the minutes as the 1.

- I think Norris starts and Petty is the first guy off the bench at any of the 2-4 spots. Norris will greatly benefit from being able to play his spot and not be asked of too much and is an average/above average rebounder and team defender. Petty gets to come off the bench and be a spark plug (And may even have more minutes than Norris)

- We use the 2/3/4 positions fluidly because of all our length out there. Petty, Reese, Norris, Jones, Ingram, Key can all fluctuate from big 2's to small 4's pretty seamlessly depending on matchups.

- We don't see a lot of Giddens and Hall on the floor at the same time. I just don't think we'll have 2 big, strong, offensively limited guys on the floor at the same time much unless the opposition dictates it.

I don't know how good we'll be, but it should be an exciting team with more talented depth than we've had in a really long time.

There is no way Norris starts. There are more talented guys than him and for him to be starting would be a travesty.
