My totally hipshot thought is that Oats likes Alabama, feels like he has a great AD and gets all the support he needs and also feels like the toughest initial build work is behind him and they're about to be where he wants to be. I don't see him walking away from that after Year 2 or Year 3 for anything less than an NBA job (if he wants to do the NBA thing).

I agree with all of this, and would add that he seems enamored with Saban and having the opportunity to work so close to him and learn from him has to count for something. Not sure how often they talk, but he's made several comments that sound like something Saban would say.

People are talking about the buyout being the obstacle to grabbing Oats, but what about the situation he's in? He has a team in the Sweet 16 as a 2-seed and likely has 2 incoming 5-stars (3 if you count Tchikou like I do), potentially 1 more former five star, an athletic big (Wilson) and returning all but 3 players from this 2-seed worthy roster. Why would anyone leave at the this point?

The bottom line is that basketball and football are just different worlds in terms of job hierarchies and the resources needed to field a winner. In terms of job prestige, Kentucky and UNC blow us out of the water. In terms of resources we can compete with anyone. Compared to football where a program like Mississippi State or Mizzou couldn't spend as much as we do in their wildest dreams. So if it's just a question of "where can I win the most", we're on pretty equal footing with any other P-6 program, as evidenced by the fact that you can recruit top 20 classes here and get a high seed in the tournament if you win the conference.

Excellent point. How many other rosters in the country are built specifically with his playing style in mind while also being as talent rich as ours is projected to be next season?

Personally I wonder how long we'll be able to keep Hodgson around with Oats. I think the guy is a critical component of what we do, particularly in recruiting, and is someone I could see getting long look from mid majors before too long.

Yeah I suspect that he and Pett will probably be gone in the next 2-3 years. Hell, Charlie Henry is more experienced than either of them. He may get a job somewhere himself.

If I was a MidMajor Hodgson would be near the top of my list. Honestly, if Oats ever did leave I wouldn’t mind giving Hodgson a try here

He would be a big loss. He is our connection to Juco and Canada

I don't mean this in a derogatory way, but other than recruit and help with practice, what does Hodgson do? Pettway runs the offense, and (dude who's name is eluding me at the moment) runs the defense. What do we know about Hodgson's coaching ability?

I think Oats said he lets him know about Matchups that are advantageous during the game

About what? I keep seeing comments about Hodgson taking another job. I'm just curious if he's ever coached or why people think he'd be a candidate.

I'm one of the least worried about Oats leaving, if that's what you're talking about. He's not going anywhere any time soon.

We know that he's learned from the best in the business and is our top assistant. Pettway may "run" the offense and Henry may "run" the defense, but it's really Nate's defense and offense that they're helping him manage.

I can't say I'm entirely sure what Hodgson's role looks like, but I picture it like the Head General and his advisor. Oats makes the final decisions but consults his advisor before making those decisions. Whereas Pettway and Henry are sort of like officers that are simply carrying out the general's plans.

Yeah, Oats has mentioned a couple of times that Hodgson's primary coaching focus is on advantageous matchups to exploit and disadvantageous areas of concern. He's said that he is a vital part of what we do and obviously he's an elite level recruiter.

Hodgson being one of the best JuCo recruiters in the country would be of particular value to a mid-major as well since JuCo transfers are the easiest way for them to bring instant impact guys into their programs.

Hodgson was the lead recruiter on Primo, Tchikou, Quinerly, Langston Wilson, Elllis, Miles and KAH. He Is on Bediako too.

Excellent recruiter.

Hodgson also coaches the bigs too I believe.

If it’s based on pay, Pettway would be our top assistant. He gets $27,263.34 per month while Hodgson and Henry each get $25,780.

Looking at all their pay, I’m pretty surprised to see Snowden only making about $72k. Looks like Holter is making about $114k.

I think I read somewhere before that Henry is almost considered as an Associate HC even if he doesn't technically have that title. Like if Oats were ejected or couldn't be at a game for whatever reason, then Charlie Henry would take the role as HC. I did a search for it, but I can't find it anywhere.

Man, what I could do with 27k/month.

Crazy.

Bump him up, Greg/Nate. Our boys are in great shape and all the players love him.
